Jeans Thread

I bought a pair of jeans from Ross when we were in California last month, but they were too long.  I cut off a couple of inches and sewed it with a light blue thread since I couldn't find a suitable brownish gold thread that would match the other trim thread on the jeans.  I've had this problem before and ended up sewing it with a light blue thread to just match the color of the cloth.

I've been carrying around this sample piece for the past several weeks just in case.

What a surprise to actually find thread that was meant for jeans and it was the perfect color!

I found it at Longs Drugs here in Hawaii which is CVS on the mainland.

Regular thread is usually much thinner so it's not exactly like what you see on jeans.  However, this thread is thicker and more similar to what you see on the rest of the jeans.  Then there was the problem of getting that thicker thread through the needle hole on my sewing machine.  Thank goodness I happened to have this needle threader.

The next problem I found is that because the brown thread is more contrasting, every swerve and dip you make is visible.  I would have resewed it but Art said, "Who's going to look at the bottom of your pants anyway?"

If that's the case, maybe I didn't even have to get this special thread.  Ah well, I'm happy.  I did do a better job on the second leg so if you see me walking around town, please be sure to look at that one.

  1. Interesting! David prefers to have his pants blind stitched at the dry cleaners near by. The tailor charges him a couple of dollars per job. I couldn't have done it better. Besides, I gave my Singer to Maria.

  2. Well jeans thread really seemed like a great idea. You made me look at my hem just now and it is done in the blue thread.

  4. ha, you are so funny, I'll make sure to look at that leg when we meet, lol, I sure wish I could find this thread, my husband has short legs and i have to hem his jeans all the time! He is 5 ft 9 but has short legs, its hard to find the shorter leg length it seems all the jeans are made for people 6 ft!This would be great.I worked in a fabric store and they never even had this!

  5. Again...thanks for the smile! I'm with Art. Anyone looking at the seam at the bottom of your jeans is clearly weird!!

  7. Well, I think it looks just fine on both legs. You are a very enterprising person, Kay. I wonder if CVS exists here in Washington State under another name? I'll have to check that out. :-)

  8. Sometimes the stitching on the store bought jeans is not all that even either....I'd say you did a great job.

  9. I don't think have that at CVS here on the mainland though. I can hardly find much there outside the bare basics.

  10. I've used gold thread before but it was hard to sew through several layers of jean fabric...what a find!

  11. For that reason...who looks at the bottom of my pants...I went with the closest colored gold thread. But it did give me an OCD twitch sewing it lol. I thought of buying the jeans thread but the frugal side of me thought what Art said.

    2. The thread wasn't that expensive. It was about $2.40 or something like that. It's a big spool so I'll have enough thread to sew jeans hems forever.

  12. They sell the jeans thread at Walmart, too (CVS used to be Longs Drugs until CVS bought Longs here in Hawaii).

    1. Thanks, Lorna! I'll bet you could find them at any sewing store, but I just never looked. Too bad I don't have anymore jeans to hem up. I'll bet my daughter does though.

  13. ONe finds the most interesting things at stores like Longs, which, as you said, we no longer have. Wonder why the stores are still Longs on the islands. I'm not super fond of CVS or Walgreens or RiteAid. And, Art is right, no one is going to look at the bottom of your pants.

    1. Longs is such a famous, favorite, long time fixture in Hawaii that I believe CVS felt that it would behoove them to keep the name and customers happy.

  19. Kay, a miracle happen. I was reading this post and bemoaning the fact that they don't seem to sell jeans anymore in waist AND length. And I can never hem them properly by hand.
Than a neighbor friend came by bearing a pair of Faded Glory pants; her sister had mailed the hand-me-down from California; too big for her; could I use them? They were the perfect size! No sewing, no having to roll ugly cuffs. What luck!
(Only complaint is the pockets are half the size I'm used to. Now where am I going to put my camera, wallet, keys, and hankie when I'm out walking? ;) )
