Recently, Scott Caan who plays Danny Williams on Hawaii 5-0 gave some rather overly honest opinions about Hawaii on a late night TV show. Many people in Hawaii were very angry. Interestingly, Danny Williams on Hawaii 5-0 hates Hawaii too. Perhaps Caan was staying in character?
Caan complained that life in the islands was too slow for him, that the food "sucks" and there was too much meth. He also said the islands were good only 6 days at a time.
I was born and raised on Oahu and left when I was 23. Then I lived in Illinois for 34 years. Now I'm back home again.
I understand what Caan was talking about. I've heard it from some Mainlanders.
Life is a little slower here. It is relaxed and though the traffic is horrible and people might be getting more impatient, you still see a lot more smiles in Hawaii. I walk around and people often stop and talk to you.
We don't have a lot of theater and places to go to like we do on the mainland. This is a small island. You can't really compare Honolulu to Chicago or L.A. It's not the same.
The food here does not suck as Caan says. Art and I don't go to all the expensive places, but we've been to a few nice restaurants and they are very good. I'm sure Caan has enough money to go to the very fine restaurants there are on the islands.
The local people of Hawaii love our state and it hurt to hear someone criticize our culture and cuisine. Caan has since apologized but people are still feeling the sting.
It wasn't wise of him to dump on Hawaii. He will probably not be offered a free cocoa puff from Liliha Bakery now. And he'll probably get a lot fewer smiles.

The people I know who have lived in Hawaii seem to love the place universally. You and gigihawaii have both given me a look at Hawaii that makes it seem pretty darn perfect. I don't watch that program and now I never will! How tacky to dump on a beautiful place!
ReplyDeleteOnce again actors prove to be human. They can say and do stupid things just like the rest of us but for some reason they are expected to be above the norm.
ReplyDeleteI saw that episode of Five O and was a bit surprised at his downing of the city. Perhaps he just had the writers write in his personal feelings though I think from the beginning his character was a reluctant resident. All tourist towns(I have lived in several) have drawbacks but usually they are tourist towns for a good reason. Lots of pluses.
ReplyDeleteAll smart dogs know that you don't dump in your own yard it you can help it.
I'd say HE has a problem, not Hawaii.
ReplyDeleteyes, he put his foot in his mouth this time didn't he!
ReplyDeleteHmmm... a refreshing bit of honesty from Mr. Caan.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with him, and have only contempt for his view.
He's rather hard to please. Oahu has a million people, on only 600sq miles. A city that size has lots of bright lights & other modern pleasures.
He seems a very shallow type, judging a place by how much hustle & bustle there is. His view is more commonly found in trivial teenage girls who've just been allowed out for dating & discos.
I haven't caught on to watching the show, and I think Caan's character is a bit too arrogant, even for his role in the show. Send him back to the mainland and recruit another more grateful actor! DrumMajor
ReplyDeletemaybe he was just trying to get attention?
ReplyDeleteI love Hawaii just from hearing about it from you and Gigi!
ReplyDeleteWhen your show has the name Hawaii in it, it's probably best not to disgrace the island.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I don't watch Hawaii 5-0, because I rarely watch television (except for sports). I have traveled around the world, literally, and think Hawaii is the best place on the planet. Love the weather, the clothes, the people, the food, and the culture. Love, love, love Hawaii!!!
ReplyDeleteI watched the video when I heard about this on another blog. He was a bit silly to say what he did and it's probably one of those occasions he will regret for a long time to come. I know that on the few occasions I have been to Hawaii I have loved everything about it and wanted to stay for a much longer time than I had. I loved the State, the people, the food, I did not have anything negative to say. It's just hard to please some people I guess, you can give them everything but they will still not be happy.
ReplyDeleteI didn't hate Hawaii but was really happy to leave after two years. When the EX was transferred to Japan, I moved back to VA with my kids.
ReplyDeleteI like the poem...
God gives all men all earth to love,
but since man's heart is small,
ordaineth that one spot shall prove
beloved over all."
I presume that applies to women too. In my experience every place has drawbacks. Because of that, I am usually happy whereever I am. However, one of my favorite places is probably from Sheboygan WI where we spent time every summer.
Truth be told it can get cold there in winter, however. Dianne
He thinks he's acting when he waves his arms around. Also, he is always advocatinbg what comes close to torture for the crimials he faces on the show. Away with him!
ReplyDeleteCRIMINALS! ADVOCATING! I won many a spelling bee in my day, which was way before the internet. :-)
DeleteI just looked at his picture, and his eyes tell me he's a serious marijuana user.
DeleteMr. Chapin - what a keen observation about the actor's eyes and pot use. I thought he was just kind of beady-eyed. If he were using pot, he'd be happier, me thinks. DrumMajor
DeleteScott has made no secret of the fact that having been born and bred in LA, he's not someone who can enjoy paradise. I liken it to Danno's love of Jersey over Hawaii. For some people, the familiarity of home in its imperfection is preferable to anywhere else. If we all wanted to live in paradise, everyone'd all be living on top of each other on those small Pacific islands instead of being spread out all over the country (because Hawaii does TOTALLY ROCK). As someone who lives there, you DEFINITELY don't want all of us rushing to move out there with you!
ReplyDeleteI do remember wincing when he made the comment about the food sucking - I totally missed the meth comment - but I think sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the moment, especially when hanging around with someone who speaks as freely as Chelsea Handler. I'm not excusing what he said, but he IS human, and I think he realized that he should have packed a mental filter with him when he flew back to LA.
I know I've said some inappropriate things in my life, and I've learned from them. I've been fortunate enough for the people around me to forgive me, as I've forgiven others who've done the same. The trick is to learn from our mistakes... so we can make totally different ones next time!
You're absolutely right that we need to all get passed it, forgive and forget it. We all have moments where we might have put our foot in our mouth and regretted it.
DeleteI've never watched Hawaii 5-0, so I don't know who this character is, but I am really appalled by what he had to say. I bet he liked picking up his check he made while he was there. Shame on him.
ReplyDeleteKinda' like biting the hand that feeds you. Not cool.
ReplyDeleteoh dear! such a dumb thing to say!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fool. Biting the hand that feeds him. I found your fair city hot in July....what a fool I am. The food was great tho, and you have the best thrift stores ever there. :) It's all a matter of perspective.
ReplyDeleteI have not watched the program. And that actor looks unappealing to me.
ReplyDeleteBut the guy is entitled to his opinion, I suppose. He can go back and live in lovely L.A. for all of me.
