Comparing Our Cameras

The last time I compared our cameras, I took photos of the rainbow outside my window.  That wasn't a really good test because the rainbow is not a constant subject.  I also didn't use our iPad.  This time I decided to take a photo of the same thing, from the same distance, uncropped, in the same light on AUTO.  I already knew that my Canons are at a distinct disadvantage because they just don't do well in low light conditions.  Still, I was in for quite a shock.

Here is my small, handy dandy Canon PowerShot SD890IS that I keep in my bag all the time.  It turned out grainier than I expected.

This is my much bigger Canon PowerShot SX 30 IS.  I think it had the best field of view along with Art's small Panasonic.

Here is the iPhone 4S.

This is from the iPad 4.  I was surprised that it did this well since I've taken other photos with it in low light that didn't turn out very well.  I did not use a flash with any of these photos.  The iPad does not have a flash option anyway.

And lastly, here's Art's Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3.

I was surprised to find that the iPad's photo was as good as my big Canon and better than my small Canon.  The iPhone's camera did the worst.  I think Art's Panasonic Lumix did the best.

I've had my small Canon for several years now.  Hmmmm... perhaps it's time for an upgrade?

  1. A great idea! That's a lovely room Kay. Sweet momentos and a wonderful idea to have the children's clothing framed, along with their photos. I love to see others decorating, especially as I am in the process of redoing each room in our house soon. Painting time coming up!

    1. Thank you, Denise. I really want to find some better bed things though. Those bedspreads must be 20 years old. Art was rather appalled that I took this photo since he's using it as a storage area for our house renovation that is not showing much promise of getting done anytime soon.

    1. Ummm... That's what Art is saying. LOL He also said his Panasonic is older than my small Canon.

  3. I'll bet if you had used the iPhone's HDR setting, it would have been much better. It takes several pictures at the same time and combine them for maximum benefit. It works great on indoor shots. Good review!

    1. Thank you so much, DJan. I shall look into what that HDR setting is. I haven't even heard about that. This is why blogging is so wonderful!

    1. The one on the far left is my granddaughter KC's dress from when she was 6 months old. The middle is the dress I made for my daughter, Tiffany when she was four or five years old. The one on the right is my son's when he was about 8 months old. I was so glad I had photos of them wearing those clothes.

  6. The bigger Cannon did almost as well as the Panasonic. Nice to see your bedroom too. :)

    1. The bigger Canon does better than the Panasonic when there is good daylight.

      I think.

I shall have to do another test. LOL

  7. Ha ha, I am still laughing at Granny Annie's comment. I liked the SX 30 best but I am a poor judge. I am only recently able to recognize my subjects when I take a photo.

    1. I'm glad to hear that since that is my camera. I think I'll do another test outdoors and see if my Canons fare better.

  8. Interesting shots. Though I am not very happy with my Canon PowerShot cameras, I still have not mastered the $700 Sony camera. I am afraid of dropping it. Lol. So, David has been using it exclusively.

    1. I'm still happy enough with my big Canon. It's done quite well on outdoor shots.

  9. It's interesting with cameras. I have a new CanonSX40HS but it's too big to carry in my purse so I end up trying to take photos with my samsung phone. I need something in the middle and small.

    1. I don't carry my big Canon around much either. My brother has always told me that the best camera to have is the one you have with you all the time.

  10. I was out to dinner with my Reading Group. One lady had brought her iPad. I casually asked her if I could look at it, as someday I may purchase one. I asked her if I could take a picture and I took one of the glass candle holder on the table. Boom, both of us were astounded by how great the picture was. However, an iPad would be too big to carry around.

I use my cell phone (a little-known LG MyTouch) and find it to produce some outstanding results, plus it's very easy to carry around. All the pictures on my Facebook come from that and I'm pleased with the results. The recent picture of the mother and little girl, framed in a windoiw square, in the Honolulu Museum of Art was taken with that cell phone. That's about as good as my pictures will ever get.

    1. I was surprised at the photo from the iPad also. I used it another time and it didn't do as well, but there were probably other factors involved. So much has to do with the photographer and the situation.

    1. The iPhone does a lot better when you use the flash which I didn't for these tests. I also just turned on the HDR setting that DJan mentioned. It will be interesting to test out.

    1. I didn't use a flash on any of the photos. I think I'll try this again another day outside on a sunny day and see what happens. I already know that using a flash with the iPhone turns a person's eyes white. Very strange.

  13. Hi Kay! Thanks for showing what cameras can do. Actually I think all your photos are good, only the third one was not as good as the others, but I am no expert Kay.
Have a great day and rest of the week.
