Traveling With an iPad

When we were preparing to leave for Los Angeles, we debated whether or not we should take our laptop.  We've NEVER traveled without our laptop.  I have all my recipes on our laptop and I would check and write blog posts with it.  Basically, almost whatever I do on my desktop, I could do with the laptop.  We figured this trip to L.A. would be a good testing ground.  If anything failed we could always use my brother-in-law's computer.

Art and his sister, Kay
All in all, the iPad worked out fine.  The best part was the fact that everything that's gone on within the last four years is on my blog.  Art could pull up posts that illustrated to his sister what he was talking about with the tap of a finger.

Our son, Jon had taught me how to install the Google Drive app so I was able to upload all my recipes onto the Google cloud that rains down on my iPad and iPhone.  Photos on my Photostream were a fingertip away.

I discovered that I didn't have to bring my Kindle after all because once I installed the Kindle app on the iPad, there were ALL my books.  Incredible!

The downside is that I found it was difficult to try to post on my blog with the iPad.  I'm also not able to upload photos from my other cameras onto the iPad.  I still need to find some wire thing to do that.   We also need to learn how to print using the iPad. Art says he'll have to look for an app.

There's still a lot to learn, but for short trips, we'll definitely stick to the iPad and leave the laptop at home.  For longer stays in Illinois I believe we'll bring the laptop.

Oh and another thing, you don't have to take out the iPad when you go through the security lines at the airport.  That was great!

By the way, are any of you experiencing problems with people trying to comment on your blog?  A friend of mine just said she was having a terrible time with the editing (preview) and posting of her comments on my blog.  I'm wondering if I need to do a comment settings fix.

Sigh... if it's not one thing, it's another.

  1. I use my iPad exclusively for travel now. Haven't missed having the laptop along. The connector thingy for uploading photos to the iPad from a camera's memory card costs about $30. Got mine at WalMart.

  2. Just taking the IPad on vacations makes a lot of sense. I am still attached to my laptop but not having to haul it around on vacation would be nice. Like you I still have a lot to learn with mine.

  3. Very neat! I am tempted by the notion of an iPad but can't really justify it. I think they're fantastic.

  4. I did not have problems commenting today, but have given up in the past. It just wasn't possible for me then. But now it seems to have been fixed. I gave my first iPat to my wife, Patty, and she loves it. Then I bought myself the new iPad and while it has several improvements over the first one, I just never got into it like she does and like you guys do. I don't like the keyboard on it or have yet to learn how to type properly on it. My son has larger fingers than me and he can type like crazy on it. I have to continue looking for new apps so that I will use mine more than I do.

  5. I don't use my iPad nearly as much as I once did because I now use my iPhone for lots of the same stuff. But I cannot abide trying to read anything much on the phone and will browse the web on the iPad while I'm out and about. My MacBook Air is so easy to travel with, because it's so light! I also don't try to post from the iPad for the reasons you already mentioned. Just give me a real keyboard! And a way to put pictures on!

    1. The only problem with the iPhone is that it's tiny and I don't wear my glasses all the time because I'm so lazy.

  6. the kindle app is pretty good, I'm surprised people don't just spend a little more on a better tablet.

  7. Wow Kay, you are a few tech steps above me. I'm glad it worked out so well.

  8. No problems with your blog or mine with comments. I don't have an I-pad but it sounds good!

  9. I've had no trouble, of course I don't comment everyday and when I do i often use Anonymous. I saw your comment on my blog this AM. Please look again today as I have posted a clip my son John sent me. Perhaps you will like it. Dianne

PS I would also like to read a post from you on the technical differences between IPOD, IPAD, Kindle, etc.

  11. I'm still sitting at a desktop! Might get something portable when the blogworld gets all the kinks figured out! DrumMajor

    1. I definitely love my desktop more than anything else, but the iPad is VERY convenient for checking e-mail anywhere in the house.

  12. I love my desktop. We do travel with the laptop primarily for access to the blog and pictures.

    1. I love my desktop too and would not trade it for a laptop at this point. Even Art uses his desktop more than his laptop at home.

    2. That is so odd that you like the desktop better. I don't have a desktop computer any more. I can take my laptop all over the house, even outside, to work. Right now, I'm sitting at the dining room table, working. I hate to be in one place all of the time, which is the case with a desktop machine.

  13. Glad you are home safe. My Nexus pad is great for most everything, but, no, we cannot yet blog on them with all that entails.

  15. We have talked a lot about getting an iPad just for travel. We both take our laptops when we travel (well, that's the only computers we have), but we can use our iPhones as computers, too. I go everywhere with my iPhone and do all sorts of things. The grandkids now make videos on it, just like they do on my laptop. It's hard to justify the cost of an iPad and then the cost of the internet service.

  17. The only problem I have is that when I go to your blog it often freezes my set-up for a while. This may not be your site's fault as the pc with Windows is known for freexing (or, "crashing," which is far too dramatic a term) as oppposed to the Apple, I think, or so I've heard. But it doesn't happen with other sites.

Anyway, you have a delightful blog. Yesterday's photo essay about your flying cousin from hanabuttafly days to piloting airplanes was really special.

    1. Awww... Thank you, Hank. Funny that you're having the same problem as my friend. I thank you for every one of your wonderful comments and for persevering to post them. I always look forward to hearing from you.

  18. I'm afraid I am a cheapskate and refuse to give Apple so much of my hard earned cash, when my Toshiba tablet does just the same and possibly more for half the price...and yes I love it's portability. I also read Kindle books on my tablet, I love everything about the Kindle products.

  19. On trips, we're fine with just a "mini tablet" like the Google Nexus and Kindle Fire. We don't even need a smart phone as I went back to using a Garmin for navigation and a prepaid Tracfone for calls. Of course we're not tech savvy people and don't bother taking pictures on our trips. I don't mind if we eventually fall off the tech grid and go stone ages ha! After the Motorola Triumph died (at least the battery did), I decided not to bother with another one, so sure of that since I gave the VISA double warranty phone replacement to my DIL.

    1. Art really likes his Kindle Fire, but he admits that the iPad is more convenient and flexible with all the apps.

  20. I didn't know that an ipad had so many capabilities! Do you have a data plan or do you use wi-fi? And yet I do not like touch keyboards, and my 14 inch laptop, while heavier, is a great little travel companion.

    1. Our problem is that Art's laptop is quite bulky and heavy. The iPad was so easy to tote. No we didn't get the data plan thing. We just use wi-fi. You're right that the iPad is not as easy to type on even with the new keyboard attachment covers.

  21. I love my iPad and have found it brilliant to travel with, and don't bother to take my laptop any more. Blogsy is an easy app to use for posting blogs, and the attachment for uploading photographs isn't too expensive. A downside is that you can't print from any old computer, it has to have AirPrint. Luckily we needed a new printer shortly after I got my iPad, so we got one that works with it. I really love the sat nav facility too, as well as loads of other apps that I use all the time.

I haven't had any problems with uploading posts, so hope you get that fixed easily.

    1. Thank you so much for your advice, Amanda. I'll look into Blogsy. Art checked the apps for blogging and so many of them got bad reviews that we never uploaded them. I still need to find that wire connection to upload photos from the camera to the iPad and iPad to the PC.

    2. Yikes! There's a rather steep learning curve for the Blogsy app that I just bought. It'll take me a while to figure it out. I don't quite know how to post to this blog from that app yet.
