The Magic of Flight that Took Us to L.A.

A very long time ago my cousin, Arnold found a Monarch caterpillar in his front yard and decided to raise it himself.

He watched as it spun itself into a cocoon and then emerged to become a butterfly that flew off into the skies.

There was some sort of magic there and it grew into a passion for flight.  One Christmas, he received this airplane.

After watching his dad, he began to make his own model airplanes, then learned to fly a glider.

When he grew older, he joined the army and spent time in helicopters over Vietnam.

Eventually he became a pilot for Hawaiian Airlines.

My friend, Dave Au (that amazing photographer who doesn't charge enough for his work) took this photo of Arnold.  It was a shock for me because I'd never seen Arnold in his captain's uniform before.

I think he looks rather dashing and awfully handsome, but then I'm biased.

After 34 years of piloting big airplanes across the ocean, Arnold's retirement party was a proud, happy, but perhaps a wistful moment for him.  It's hard for him to give up flying those big jets and all the people who worked with him.

To celebrate this milestone in his life, Arnold treated Art and me to a last trip to Los Angeles before his official retirement day.

That is why Art and I have been gone for the past week visiting Art's sister, Kay and brother-in-law in California.

I'll be writing about our precious time together in the coming days.

And to think it all started with a butterfly.

  4. Oh, you have been traveling! Of course I never know about it until you get home, but congratulations on having that wonderful gift from Arnold. Now I get to enjoy it too! I think you may have gotten some of our cold weather even down there southern California. I love the way one's life is shaped in ways you can never predict.

  6. Wonderful memoir punctuated with pictures that foreshadowed your cousin's career so perfectly!

Our last two trips to Vegas was with Hawaiian Air. I love it when they announce the pilot's names and you know he's probably a local guy (or gal.)

    1. I'm really disappointed that I never got to actually be on a flight that he was piloting. I used to always look for the pilot's name, but it was never his.

  11. Congratulations, Capt. Arnold, on a life well lived and a dream well followed.
Kay, you are right, the cute little boy turned into a dashing handsome man.
And you even got the bulkhead seats!

  12. Yes, handsome, but I wasn't ready for the white hair. You too look simply wonderful. What a perfect gift. Now he can move over to maintenance or into something else with HI Air. :) I have a friend with another airline and he is in his late 70's. Not working would kill him.

    1. I am so jealous of his silvery white hair. Alas, wrong side of the family. His mother is my mother's younger sister. He must have gotten his dad's genes.

  13. Capt. Arnold is definitely a very handsome fellow. And what a fun trip for you! Are you in business class?

    1. No, I'm afraid not. Arnold was so hoping we'd be able to get into first class, but it filled up just before we boarded. Instead, we got the bulkhead which has extra leg room. LOVED it!

  14. Kay - Your photos of Arnold as a little guy and his resultant story is good enough for the local paper, or Hawaiian Airlines' trade magazine. Doesn't look like he ate too many of those Voodoo donuts; yikes! DrumMajor
