Cooking Crab With Lettuce

For our last dinner in California, Art's sister, Kay and husband wanted to prepare a special dinner for us.


They bought some Jonah crab claws and corn on the cob that she knows Art loves.


I made my spinach, watercress, red leaf lettuce, tomato, seaweed salad, red pepper, soba, imitation crab salad with a lemon, sugar, black pepper, vinegar, oil, sesame seed oil type dressing.


Kay wasn't quite sure what would be the best way to cook the crabs.  We thought boiling would take a lot of the taste out of the crab claws.  Finally, she decided to follow a California radio show cook, Melinda Lee's method of covering the claws with lettuce leaves and foil and then baking it at 350 degrees.



It was all wonderful although we discovered that Jonah crabs require a lot of work to get very little meat.  Still, it made every morsel that much more special.

It was a lot of fun for all of us to be in the kitchen cooking together.  It was also a little sad knowing it would be our last meal together until the next time we're able to get ourselves to California.

  8. Love your salad...sounds like a healthy version of Somen Salad without the shoyu and all the other ingredients like salty ham and fishcake. I think I'll try it. We often buy soba but just eat it plain with dipping sauce. I will now try it in a toss type salad. Thanks!

  10. I don't like crab legs because of the work getting the meat out, but I will eat crab cakes. I love your colorful salad, though. Wow!

  12. I was not aware of Jonah crab, so I looked them up. They are an east coast relative of our PNW dungeness crabs. We get them here in the winter months when the price goes down, and Tom and I each eat a whole one. It's work cracking them, but they are oh, so good, especially dipped in lemon butter. They come already cooked and are eaten cold. I was surprised that you would need to cook the Jonah crab claws.

  13. Kay and Art -- I didn't know there was a crab named Jonah either. I like the fake crabmeat chunks from the store in a salad cold, or heated with lemon butter. (No crabs in the Missouri river.) So nice for you to see your California relatives. I seem to only see my brothers when there's a "reason," like a wedding or funeral. DrumMajor

    1. Art has a very lovely, close relationship with his sister. I have a close relationship with my brother and we did work to foster that between our children. I think it's important to see each other to maintain that tie. We're trying to do that with our families here too. It's a great feeling to once again touch bases with all our family.

      I really like the imitation crab in salads too.
