Hewlett-Packard Lemons

In December of 2010, our son-in-law helped us buy a 25" monitor from Best Buy.  I was replacing our smaller Dell monitor because frankly my eye sight is getting weaker and I wanted a bigger screen.

In June of 2011 the monitor just died.  Kaput.  Dead in the water. It was barely 6 months old.  We called Hewlett-Packard and they sent us another monitor.  We noticed quickly that it wasn't a new one.  It was refurbished, but we decided to just accept it.

We've had it for a little over a year now.  Then for about a week it began to flicker. I thought it was my computer that was having trouble.  Nope.  Suddenly on Friday the monitor went black.  More black Friday stuff.

Art called Hewlett-Packard and Dave looked up our records and said the warranty was up.  So too bad.

Aggravation!  Hewlett-Packard sends us two lemons for monitors and it's too bad?  It's too bad for them because I'm writing about it and the service you get.  I will NEVER buy a Hewlett-Packard monitor or computer ever again.  On the other hand, their printer hasn't been half bad.

So now we're looking for another monitor.  Meanwhile I'm using the trusty smaller Dell monitor that's continuing to work just fine.

In fact, Art says he just saw a nice deal at Costco for another Dell monitor that's even bigger.  It's 27"!  And it comes with a two year warranty.  Sounds good to me.

Hewlett-Packard, shame on you.

  2. There is something with HP and monitors. We had a HP laptop, and the first thing that conked out , just like that, was the monitor.Warranty, repairs, and one fine day, again, no display. It happened twice. We simply then bought another laptop. I join you in saying HP, shame on you....

  3. My 27-inch HP monitor has been working just fine for seven years (fingers and toes crossed). Sounds like they're letting quality deteriorate.

  4. I have an Apple and have had no monitor problems whatsoever over seven years and three different monitors. I feel safe! :-)

    1. I adore my MAC products, too. I have used Apple since 1988 when I first began teaching and learning how to use them at work. I won't go back! I even have convinced my Geek son-in-law, encryption engineer, to go Mac for his next computer!
      Cheers from Cottage Country!

  5. I have a new one with a screen and keyboard, but I miss my laptop, which died all of a sudden after two years. The video card was burnt. My daughter persuaded me to take this computer, which was built by her boyfriend. It's good but still the laptop was easy to take with me anywhere in the house.
I wish good luck with your new computer!!

  6. Kay - Even my sister-in-law said HP was good. I'd had great Lexmark printers before. The HP printer croaked too soon. I've sworn by Lexmark printers since. My son has built my computer, and his. (His looks like a Mack truck for vet school slides and homework.) We both like LG monitors. Mine lasted 8 years before I got a new LG Flatron E2242. Try an LG! We get our stuff at Micro Center, which can be ordered online and held for pick up. I think they ship too. DrumMajor

  10. We had a HP laptop that went out a few months out of double warranty ( 1 year manufacturer and 1 extended with VISA). We took it to a local computer guy downtown in the Kukui Plaza to have it evaluated and he said even if he fixed it it wouldn't last because the inherent problem is with the AMD processor that is built in the HP laptop. So that was it...no more HP for us. On the other hand, our HP printer just won't quit even after I got a laser printer, I still buy inkjets to have a second printer. We now have two MSI laptops. We bought a 4 year warranty with Office Depot on one of the laptops (nervous after the HP died). However I have less success with our Motorola Triumph. One month out of manufacturer warranty the phone died. Fortunately we paid with VISA and I am now awaiting their decision to cover what Motorola would have offered under warranty, refund of my purchase of the device. I shipped the phone for service (flat $113 repair cost) and they shipped it back saying they cannot repair because end of life, promptly refunded the $113. Of course it took a phone call to get to the bottom of it or they would have not refunded anything.

    1. When we got the phone back from repair no written note or anything...we turn on the phone and still dead. They said they checked the phone and everything checks out. After telling them that, they said it must be the battery and will refund the repair cost since they cannot send us another battery since the phone is end of life, so refund of the purchase is what they would have offered under warranty. Sorry for being so long winded....I don't know why I can't write what I mean...this is why husband needs to come in with me to the doctors...he thinks I am not communicating properly.

    3. Awww... that's so sweet of you, Peg. I'll go check it out. I'm sure your laptop will be just fine. I don't think we've ever bought an hp laptop. I'm waiting for the NEXT generation of iPads and then I'll take the plunge. :-)

    4. I just checked, Peg. I'm afraid something is wrong. I don't see any posts. Looks like you've just starting building it again after Blogger locked you out. Sorry about that.

  11. And I had a HP ink jet printer that died in two months. Staples told me I had to take it up with HP. I left it on the counter and have never gone back.

  13. You go girl. I for one will support you. I have a NEC monitor but have no idea what that is. David is the hardware guru around here. He says he just leaves it to our computer guy who is a geek or something. Dianne

  14. Thanks for the tip.
Costco extends the warranty and tech support. I'm gonna get a Nikon there soon.
Wishing you sweet holidays with NO freaky weather. Did you hear my commentary on the Cox radio show today? I really wanted to take advantage of the opportunity!

  16. My mac laptop lasted forever. I finally had to upgrade, not because it died, but because I needed a newer one for school. I gave the older one away to a friend's daughter. I love macs. Love them.

    1. Hi Catherine, nice to meet you. The only problem with Macs are that they are so much more expensive. I KNOW they are great though. Sigh...
