Blog Lesson: Spam

I really hate spam.  Blogger actually catches most of them, but there were still some that came through to my e-mail even though you can't usually see them on my blog.

And then I saw somewhere (which I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember where because I forgot to write it down) that I could change some of my settings to help control that.

I went to my Settings.

Then I clicked on Posts and comments and changed my Comment Moderation to Sometimes for posts older than 14 days.  I guess I could have chosen a week or whatever, but I settled on 14 days.

And it has made a difference.  I don't get the annoying spam announcements on my e-mail anymore.  I do have to check my comment moderation inbox every so often, but that doesn't irritate me as much.

Yes, I know Wordpress has less problems with spam, but my cyber family is on Blogger so this is my home base with Wordpress as my back-up.

Do you have any good blog tips?

  1. Here is my blog tip: have someone else read your post before you hit PUBLISH. I NEVER see any mistakes no matter how many times I read it. My eyes see what they want to see!

Looking forward to reading all the great tips you will get from folks! I still don't know what I am doing! :-)

    1. Gigi, I am the same way. But, if you ever check your askimet stats, you will see huge numbers of spam that WordPress has filtered. Sure makes my life easy. All this filter and checking sounds like too much work.

  7. Wonderful tips thanks. Wonderful cooking tips, double thanks. So sorry you didn't get the Dell monitor tho.

    I started deleting the Spam in the Spam folder yesterday. It got stuck at 2700, and wouldn't move. I start again today, and once I get them all deleted I will stay on top of them. Grrrr;;;;;

  9. You know how I feel about Blogger BUT I have noticed something, Blogger writers seem to leave more comments than WordPress readers. I wonder why that is? I can go to a WordPress blog, and there aren't nearly as many comments as there seems to be on Blogger posts. Also, it seems that Blogger has more women writers.

    1. My Wordpress blog which is just a copy of this one gets maybe one or two comments every two weeks and a bunch of Likes, and it's no where like this Blogspot site. Blogger also has quite a bit more bells and whistles, I think. Not sure, but I think.

  11. I got some spam this a.m. disguised as a comment on my photo. Type Pad does a good job for me, but it costs something. Worth it to me. Everything comes into my box, which I moderate. There are spates of ridiculous spam from time to time, but by and large it is not a problem. Since I am political and feminist, trolls do like to come around from time to time. They go away after a warning or two.
And I do like the unlimited posting I get and being able to put up photos without having to right size them.
I also have made blogger and blogspot accounts that have my web site on them, which is easy to do and lets people know I'm out there, should they be interested.

  12. I do get a few email spam comments that don't show up on the blog. I just recently "found' comment moderation, so I'll check in again.
Thanks. anything to avoid that word verification thing!

  13. Well, I've always used total comment moderation and I think that is the best. Then there is no need for email notification of incoming comments. I almost never get spam.
It is interesting to try to figure out just what Blogger sends to the spam folder. Once a reader wrote "Nazi," just in a historical context, and Blogger condemned it as spam. It is also suspicious of comments from Anonymous.

I LOVE hearing from you!

However, if you sign in as ANONYMOUS, please don't forget to tell me who you are in the comment box by just writing your first name. We would all appreciate it if you kept your comment respectful and kind.

I apologize for having to use Word Verification occasionally, but the SPAM is making me crazy.
