My wonderful son-in-law, Ed used his airline miles to upgrade our United flight to First Class. This is one of the rare times, I was looking forward to the plane ride.
The first thing you marvel at is the leg room which is lovely. The larger leather seats are also very comfortable.
We left on the 7:15 PM flight so dinner was served. We thoroughly enjoyed it. I was stuffed.
But I had to make room for dessert.
Even though it was First Class, I couldn't sleep. I really tried. Maybe I should have had some of the alcohol that was offered, but I didn't want to upset my stomach. Soon breakfast was served, but I was still full from dinner. Ah well... I made a valiant effort to eat as much of this as I could.
Although the flight was listed on Expedia as being 8 hours and 24 minutes, it was only 7 hours and 34 minutes. Maybe it was because we were in First Class? I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
Since we got there earlier than planned, our daughter, Tiffany couldn't pick us up right away. She needed to take our granddaughter, K.C. to school first.
We could feel the cooler, dryer temperatures at Chicago's O'Hare Airport.
When we got home, we saw that KC had hung up posters to welcome us back. I loved the earrings she put on my drawing and grandpa's mustache and glasses on his.
Five year old, KC had also put place cards on the sofa where she hoped we would sit.
We later picked KC up from kindergarten after school was over. Tif went to greet her and I saw KC looking past Tif to see if we were truly there. It was such a nice feeling to see her face light up and hear her call out, "Grandpa! Grandma!"
Next came tap dancing class.
It's amazing that those little tap shoes could make so much noise... ummm... I mean music.
We brought out the little Hawaiian dress we got her which she enjoyed, but what she was more excited about was the Hawaiian picture books that her great grandmother and we brought for her.
What she and Tiffany both loved were the mochi we brought for dessert.
Ed loved the Hawaiian coffee we brought for him.
We were feeling jet lagged and exhausted, but being with KC kept our spirits high.
We call KC the Energizer Bunny because she keeps going and going and going...
I think she was still going and going while Art and I crashed.
And that was our first day.

All are heartwarming pictures but I love the one of dancer KC. What beautiful form!
ReplyDeleteKay, I am following the news right now about the tsunami in Hawaii. I hope it won't be too bad.
Thank you, Dina. I just checked the news and it said the warning was downgraded to advisory and then lifted at 1:00 AM. This is the first time since we've been back that we've heard those continuous warning sirens. Since nothing woke me after 10:30 PM last night, I figured we were all OK. Thank goodness.
DeleteI am worried about Hurricane Sandy though since Jon is in Baltimore and Sarah is in D.C.
Thank you again for thinking about us. I was surprised to get your e-mail from Israel last night barely an hour after we figured out what the sirens were for.
So glad Hawaii was spared. I read that the evacuation and resulting congestion caused more trouble (accidents) than the ocean did.
DeleteYes, we pray for the poor Americans in Sandy's path.
you brought tears to my eyes today, such a loving grand daughter, how special she made you and Art feel, all for pennies of paper and crayon but a million dollars worth of memories, I have never flown but I can see how first class would be wonderful, I have long legs !! I really enjoy your travel posts,Have a wonderful Sunday, stay safe, troubled weather and an earth quake down your way!!!
ReplyDeleteThat tsunami came from out your way didn't it? I was worried about all my Canadian friends.
DeleteI will have to look at the news about the tsunami in Hawaii. First I've heard about it. KC is growing up so quickly, but she sure does love her grandparents and knows how to show them how much! :-)
ReplyDeleteShe really is growing quickly and learning so much too. It amazed us to see the progress she made in the month that we were there.
DeleteGrandkids are the best, and KC is no exception! Glad you had such a great flight in 1st class.
ReplyDeleteI had not heard about a tsunami either....I'll have to look. Keeping up with kids is tough even when you haven't just come off a long flight. I know you loved it though. I love her greeting signs.
ReplyDeletehow fun...to see family again.
ReplyDeletewhat a LOVELY reunion, you are role models for what family is/should be all about!
ReplyDeleteIt's very kind of you to say that, but we're very average. We've had our difficult moments and had to ride through them. We do value our families though, whether we're related by blood or not.
DeleteOh, this brings back the memories and feelings of all of those airport greetings, with the kids running, arms outstretched. What a great feeling to be so welcomed. I love KC's preparations for your visit.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful greeting! The little spot where you're sitting, waiting to be picked up from the airport, looks like a space capsule, or one of those tubes at the bank. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI can hardly believe that trip is over. It went by so fast. I'm enjoying reliving it on this blog now. I hope the weather is pleasant out your way. It's very calm and peaceful over here right now.
DeleteA lovely first day - seeing your granddaughter tap-dancing was perfect:-)
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful of your son-in-law to upgrade you to more comfortable seats. I'd love to fly first class but Dick can't see the point of it, even though he is taller and one would suppose he'd like the legroom.
ReplyDeleteKC is such a treasure, at an age when she really appreciates her grandparents. I know she makes you very happy, and vice versa.
K
Tell Dick to do Economy Plus. It's not as expensive and you get more leg room. We experienced the Economy Plus for the first time on the return trip and I'd be really tempted to get it again.
DeleteYour first day is the envy of every traveling grandparent. Wonderful.
ReplyDeleteWe've had one first class flight on Delta....don't know exactly why we were upgraded at the last minute when husband went to the gate desk to check on something. Just at the right time and the right place I guess. It was certainly a treat and it did make the flight a shorter one and more comfortable. Nice being served with tableware and snacks served from a basket several times...champagne and more champagne...and of course the ice cream sundae.
ReplyDeleteL. from W.
Actually, it would have been nice to have the return trip as first class instead since it ended up being an hour and a half longer. However, it really was great either way.
DeleteAw Kay, how adorable is KC. Such a gorgeous little girl and isnt she growing up quickly. The tap classes - very cutre. And I love your red earrings by the way. Her drawings are very detailed for such a wee girl too. Glad you got to fly in comfort, the food actually looks good and as for leg room - I certainly could do with that every time I fly. I am 5ft 9 and it always seems not enough room - I often wonder how tall men manage on planes. And I so agree with Christine, you are role models for what families should be all about.
ReplyDeleteLilly, you should try Economy Plus. We had that on the return trip and it really made a difference. I wish I had your height. When you're short your legs aren't that comfortable. I feel like I need to put my feet on a foot rest or something.
DeleteWhat a lovely welcome! Looks like you had a wonderful start to your time over here.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful post, Kay. So much fun from beginning to end. Sure did enjoy this. KC is quite the artist with a lot of attention to details. Your earrings are so cute and, Art and his glasses and mustache are smile makers. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip.
ReplyDeleteThat's the funny thing---as far as I know, the trip to Illinois is already over with, finished, kaput. This method of thinking ahead, would make a great plot for a mystery novel. A crime could be committed and then an alibi established online as to how the crook could not have been in Hawaii because they were on the Mainland.
DeleteI think you should write this book, Hank. I would love to know how he gets caught.
DeleteThank you, Dellgirl! We really enjoyed this trip and am just battling jet lag now. It's not as bad as going to the mainland, but it's still tiring.
DeleteHow sweet of your son-in-law =)
