Unknown Caller

Something weird has been going on lately.

We have Caller I.D.   We've only had Called ID within the last year so we're still getting used to checking first before answering.

The trouble is we're always in a quandry if it gives only a phone number.  I don't know who the number belongs to so we stand there wondering if we should pick up anyway.  Most of the time we do pick up and 50% of the time it's somebody we know.

Lately we're getting a listing of UNKNOWN CALLER at all hours of the day.  We usually don't pick up, but when we do, all we get is what sounds like a recording of a female voice saying, "Good bye."

What the heck?

We've even had messages on our answering machine with just the "Good bye."

What is going on??

Does anybody know?

  1. No idea but we get tons of just junk phone calls and we are on the "DO NOT CALL" list. Makes me crazy. Mostly automated calls. Our oldest daughters phone (her cell) always comes up as UNKNOWN CALLER.

  2. We get do many "unknown" or "private" numbers that we don't answer and if it is someone we know, they will leave a message. Most of the people who know us call on our cell, even our doctors and known service providers.

  3. Is the end of the world nearing? If so, I hope we all have enough time to say goodbye to everyone on the phone.

  4. We only have cellphones, so we don't get many unknown callers. However, there is one from Colorado that has been driving me crazy, and I finally blocked the number. I've never done that before, but I can block up to five numbers for free. So now I am content and no longer get those incessant robo-calls.

  5. It's political season, and we're getting all kinds of automated calls. I don't have called ID on the home phone, so I answer and hang up as soon as I realize it's not a real person. On my cell phone, I don't answer if it's a number I don't recognize. I wait for them to leave a message and call back.

  6. No, I have never heard that particular message. How odd!

  7. I didn't know you could block numbers. I've been getting these annoying calls about my credit card for years even though I've answered and told them to stop calling me that I'm not interested and I'm on the do not call registry too. Very frustrating but sometimes I do let let them leave a message then pick it up after they id themselves...

  8. Hi Kay, this is funny as I have posted a similar post tonight on my blog as well. We get the same calls here. Someone trying to sell you something. Ignore them and they go away. Annoying aren't they?

  9. It's an election year and you are probably being robo-dialed. David handled phone service for all the primary candidates one year and discovered they "rent" numbers with impermanent links. Hence, no caller ID. The other problem is cell phones purchased at the 7-11 or somewhere like that. Callers use them and then toss them. Or hang onto them a while without an identity attached. All confusing isn't it. Dianne

  10. Hi Kay
I tend to agree with those who say "election year" and "robo calls"!
We don't have caller ID, but we often have robo calls on our answering machine. As someone here mentioned, the one about the credit cards is a constant. I've listened to the whole thing a couple of times to reach the part that says "to be removed from the list, press 4" or something. So I press it, but I've never been removed.
I guess this is what happens. ``Taking the bad with the good`` I guess.
Hope you and Art and your mom are well.
Dick is almost completely recovered. He thinks he`s going to referee football next month. I insist he`s not. We`re at an impasse because we forgot to ask the surgeon about football when we saw him on Monday. Dick says he`ll phone him when we get home from this business trip.

    1. I'm so glad Dick is feeling better, but I sure do hope he gives his body time to mend.

  11. I get the same 'goodbye' message - it's quite creepy = but better than the idiot calls that try to sell something

    1. We put our number on the DO NOT CALL list so we don't get solicitation calls. However, we do get lots of charity calls that do not fall under the DO NOT CALL rule.

  12. I haven't gotten that message, but get a lot of political robo-calls these days. Some of them start in the middle of the spiel and wouldn't make sense even if I chose to listen. By the way, never press the # to be deleted from their list-it just confirms for them that they have reached a working number.

  13. I've not had that particular call but we do have a lot of unsolicited calls. Sometimes the phone goes dead as soon as I answer. What a waste of time.

    1. The irritating thing is as soon as we pick up, that automated voice says, "Good-bye."

  14. unknown caller usually means the caller has their number blocked from display. We get a lot of junk calls, and sometimes I'll pick up.

  15. We have been getting a lot of toll-free calls. We have an answering machine and even if 'unknown or private caller' shows on caller ID we don't answer. If its important, they will leave a message. Even if its marketing call, we sometimes get a robocall on the answering machine. Yes its frustrating!

  16. I don't knmow the answer. But I'm getting sick of my land line phone for the same reasons you cite. My caller ID, which is also fairly new,, however, does tell me about some callers I don't want to hear from. The Metropolitan Opera is always calling me lately. It's like junk mail. Throw it away immediately or it will clutter up your life. Another thing I notice is that people think if they leave a message to call them back on Voice Mail that is sufficient. No. What did you have in mine, caller? What's your message? I got something this morning from "800 Service" 866-740-4298. I have no clue and I don't care.

  18. Once I answered a call from an unknown number and asked whom I was talking to..the reply from the other end was 'your sweetheart'..:D:D..two days the phone rang N number of times until I picked up and threatened that one more call I would be at the police station with the number..than only it stopped..

  19. I think that research firms are asking Q's about the election, but hang up if a machine answers. . . . robo-calls

  20. I don't answer calls at all unless the person leaves a message. Unfortunately husband answered a scam call and when he brought the phone to me he sounded urgent so I naturally gave it a listen. But that scam just proved to me...let the answering machine take ALL my calls and I told husband he should too. It's no longer safe to answer unless the person leaves a message.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly. If no one leaves a message, then they don't hear back from us.

  21. I'm with you - don't answer if you don't know the number. Sure is irritating, isn't it?

  22. GOT A TELEMARKETER TO HANG UP ON ME THIS MORNING.
I had fun with a telemarketer this morning. The woman had a very heavy accent and after she talked for a while I said "who did you say you are"? She said something about a medical card and repeated my address and ask if this was correct. I said "Why are you calling me"? She said because you are a senior citizen and we want to send you a medical card. I said " Why do I need a medical card"? She hung up on me.
The ID said private number and it doesn't seem to do any good to send in complaints for this type of call so I decided that messing with their minds was what I would do from now on.
