Reunion to Remember

It was with some trepidation that I agreed to go to our 45th high school reunion.  Art would not be with me because he was at his 50th reunion on the Big Island on the same night.

Joanne encouraged me to go saying she would be by my side and keep me company through the night.  Yvonne also said she'd cue me in on people I knew I would not remember.  I am NOT blessed with a good memory, which is the main reason I haven't wanted to go in the past.

I remember enjoying High School, but I didn't know how much.  I remember having a lot of wonderful friends, but what did they really think of  me?  Would anybody remember me?  Uh oh... and worse, if they remembered me, would I remember them?

The gala affair was on Friday night at Nico's at Pier 38 in Honolulu.

The Reunion committe had done an amazing job.  Yvonne's husband leads that committee so she could prepare me for some of what to expect.

I saw tables with centerpieces reflecting the fact that our high school was from a sugar plantation town.  A large screen would later show the faces of all the classmates who had passed away.  We joined hands and had a moment of silence as we remembered those friendships.  I could almost hear their voices, their laughter.

The record holds a recording of our alma mater.  The brown sugar and sugar canes remind us of where we came from.

People began arriving and happy smiles of recognition were the prelude to their hugs of welcome.  One unfamiliar fellow stood staring at me which had me worried.  He then came over and said, "Hello, Kay.  I had a little hard time making sure it was you because you cut your hair.  You used to have it at your shoulders."  He then proceeded to tell me exactly where I used to live, about my brother, my neighbors...

After a while all the happy hugs had me a little intoxicated with their loving offer of friendship and remembrance.

Everybody enjoyed the wonderful dinner buffet.

Joanne and Yvonne very kindly saved me a seat between them so they could clue me in on people I might not recognize.

Someone told me she thought I was smart because I hung out with the "smart group."  I told her it was true that I did hang out with those lifelong friends, but I myself  was certainly unfortunately not smart.  I just happened to have a smart bunch of friends.

Then there were the games.

Our MC classmate was an incredible stand-up comedian throwing out one joke at a time.

The games started with blowing up balloons and batting them at each other.  This warmed everybody up for what was to come.

Reverse BINGO where everybody stood up and then sat down if your number was called was fun.  Believe it or not I was one of those left standing dueling with another classmate until at last, my number was called to sit.  After several more games, we were all back to feeling the joys of High School fun.

And then I won this $25.00 gift certificate to Roy's in Ko'Olina.

I discovered some things about me that I wasn't sure of at this Reunion.

I wasn't exactly shy after all.  I wasn't exactly quiet after all.  And I really did have fun in High School.

We sang the alma mater together and it was a good thing the words were on the screen because I forgot some of it.  However, like my young years, I remembered the melody.

They say there will be another party when we reach Medicare at 65 in two years.  You know what?  I think I'll go.  And I'm going to encourage the rest of my smart friends to go too.

  3. How brave you were to go, and I'm so glad you enjoyed yourself. Because my parents moved when I was 13 and then again as soon I went to college at 18, I've lost touch with all of my school friends. But I don't think I'd have been brave enough to go to a reunion even if I knew of such a thing.

  6. Hey! I just thought of it and I still remember my high school alma mater! Can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday, though!
Hey, I was in the smart classes too, I wonder how in the heck the school system did that to me.
Love the SPAM on the basket on the table. I have read that SPAM has always been popular in Hawaii. Makes sense, since it is meat in a can and it can last a long time. (I also saw this on the movie, "50 First Dates".)

    1. Actually we were not grouped necessarily by smart classes. Our homerooms were alphabetical and then we went to our different subject areas. The core subjects were grouped by ability, however.

  7. I think you are so fortunate to have had such a high school and found that you actually DID enjoy it when you were there. What fun! And how well planned and put together! :-)

  8. I have never been to a high school reunion but I think I want to go to my next one in 2015. Your experience has encouraged me to go.

  9. When you talked about hanging out with the "smart group" but not being smart yourself, you could have been describing me!

  10. Looks like a great time. How many students were in your graduating class? Is your school still there? DrumMajor

    1. According to my extremely smart friend, Joanne, there were 424 students.

They built another high school a couple of years after we graduated and my brother was in the first graduating class. Our original (probably termite ridden) high school was pretty much rebuilt and became the Intermediate (Middle) School.

  11. How fun, Kay!! I'm still in touch with some of my High School friends, but I haven't been back to the little town where I grew up in Texas in over 50 years!!! I'm always amazed to hear about SO many of having died -- then I have to remind myself that I'll be 80 on my next birthday!!! Surely NOT!!! But, yes, I will!! Well, I'm still having fun and that's what counts!! Have a great week!

  12. I never finished high school, I got a GED instead. So i don't have a HS class reunion to attend. I did graduate from 3 different universities, however, I never attend those reunions either. My first college just had its 37th reunion.

Glad you had a good time at your HS reunion. I don't want to go back there ever again. Dianne

  13. Ha! After reading this, I started singing the Alma Mater of Dobbs Ferry, New York to see if I could remember it. Here goes:
In the midst of Nature's Garden,
Stands the school that we adore.
    Stately edifice of culture
And of learning through the years.
Past us rolls the mighty river
Wooded acres on its shore---and that's it, all I can remember.

The Hudson River was not far away, so that's the "mighty river." I think I'll go look at the"Periauger," the school Yearbook for 1954, my Senior Year. The "Periauger" was the name of the ferry run by Jan Dobbs in the 17th Century, hence Dobbs Ferry. The Hudson River Valley is very old by American standards. We had a beautiful, Gothic style high school building because it was built by WPA workers in the Depression to put people to work. My emotions were up and down and all around in my high school years. Knowing what I know now, I got a good education.

  14. Good for you for going! I wasn't too happy in high school. I was painfully shy and depressed, now that I understand myself.
It looks like a great shindig, though!
    Cheers from Cottage Country!

  16. Well done Kay for being brave and going. You clearly did not regret it and isnt it great to find out that you were not the quiet shy girl you thought you were. Funny how Art's reunion was on the same night as yours. You look great and your smile is always beautiful. And it looks like a really well organised event too. Well done!

  17. I was never in the smart group in high school...but I was always quite studious. As far as test scores went I was inconsistent and basically average (being placed in the "x" section, above average, was usually with teacher's recommendation). I would have loved to have been remembered as one of the smart ones. They have their clout lol

    1. I don't think I was even studious until college. Sigh...

    2. Being OCD I guess getting good grades was an obsession, ever since 7th grade.

  18. how fun, my graduation class was 400 and so I didn't know many when i went several years ago. glad you went and enjoyed!

  19. Oh, I'm glad you went and had fun! Like Art, I had my 50th this year, in June. We all had name badges with our senior photos on them and that's the only way I would have known anybody. I had fun too. I was shy in high school, but I was not shy at the reunion. I surprised people.

  20. I'm so glad you went and that you enjoyed yourself! I don't know where the years have gone. How could it be so long ago that we all graduated? We are in the midst of planning our 50th for next year.

  22. I was the silent girl in my group during high school. But still can manage to never be bullied. Your high school reunion sure like looks like a success. Smart of you to attend it.

  23. So, who's the guy in the purple kimono? Did he dress like that in school, too, or did he have to dance at the reunion? I want that kimono!

    1. He was our class president and the reason he was wearing the kimono is because he enjoys the Obon Dances. He is really a fabulous dancer. You might even know him since he was also a lawyer. I did like that color too.
