We saw an article in the newspaper about how we should dust the inside of our desktop computers every six months. I think they say the same thing about refrigerators and I don't think we've cleaned it in six years. Sad, but true.
However, lately I've been hearing funny whirring noises coming from my computer and that had me a little worried. I also noticed quite a bit of dust in my DVD reader. Therefore I asked my brother, Dennis to come over and show us how to clean it. He's our techie along with our Chicago son-in-law, Ed.
The first thing he did was to remove these screws. He said the manufacturer puts different, easier to remove screws here to show you that's the one you're supposed to unscrew.
Then you're able to slide that panel off. It's a good thing he showed us how to do this because I would have tried to remove the silver back part of the computer. That wouldn't have been pretty.
Dennis then asked to borrow my art paintbrush (that I haven't used in over a decade) while Art held the vacuum cleaner above the brush. He then proceeded to dust off the fan blades and gently dust everything else. He said there really wasn't much dust in the computer tower at all and that he's seen a lot worse.
That's nice to know.
Then he put it all back together again and my computer sounds much happier. Hmmm.... that whirring sound is still there, but maybe that's purring and not whirring I'm hearing.
But now the refrigerator is staring at me. Maybe next time...
Do you vacuum your refrigerator? Be honest.

Oh yes! I stand in front of the open refrigerator and inhale:)
ReplyDeleteI've had to clean the coils on the back of my old refrigerator several times in the last few years. But I don't have a vacuum so it's with brush and rag.
ReplyDeleteOnce I passed the computer repair lab at the Hebrew Univ. and saw the repairman lift up a laptop and blow really hard into one of the holes. A huge cloud of dust came out!
Maybe we don't have those cans of compressed air like they do in America.
Do you think I can open my notebook computer and clean it, like you guys did to your big one? Sometimes when I am skyping it overheats and the screen goes black and I have to shut down manually.
Good luck with your whirring/purring.
I've been told you can clean a laptop too but it's not as easy.
DeleteI like the idea of a purring computer:-)
ReplyDeleteknows something, I still haven't put back the panel that I took off last year. That's when I replaced the defective power suppy. In the process I busted the On and Off push button. So now I have to touch two wires together to boot up.
ReplyDeleteYes, we vacuum the motor area of our fridge once a year.mthis past spring Ken did an even more thorough job of cleaning it and was shocked to see all the dust and dog hair we'd been overlooking.
ReplyDeleteI do because I heard they run better when you do, ( to be honest I'm a clean freak!)
ReplyDeleteNever! I haven't dusted either one, but then again, I'm not a neat freak, either. Apple computers make it harder to get inside your machine, too.
ReplyDeletevacuum my frig? are you kidding and it is making sounds...lol!
ReplyDeleteI think I dusted the back of the refrigerator a few years ago when we were putting a new floor in the kitchen and it had to be moved out....that is the only cleaning that I know of in 10 years......now I guess I have a new chore to put on my list. :)
ReplyDeleteHow lucky to have a techie in the family!
ReplyDeleteI am inspired now!You always amaze me Kay.I am not back to blogging but have come to thank you for understanding me when I was feeling so low.You mean a lot to me.Regards.
ReplyDeleteWe all have moments when we're feeling a little out of sync and need some peace and quiet to get ourselves in balance again. Thank you so much for stopping by to brighten my morning.
DeleteThere is a removable grill along the bottom we take off and vacuum occasionally. The back only the couple of times the fridge has come out of the closed in space for a repair. Maybe three times in thirty years. It is the same fridge, however.
ReplyDeleteWell Kay -- I don't vacuum behind the fridge unless I'm moving. But I've had long-lasting fridges.
ReplyDeleteI've had a computer slow down due to dust. My son builds my computers. The purr I have is from the extra fans he installed. But I do have a square of of a filter material taped to the outside of the intake holes to lessen the amount of dust going in.
DrumMajor
I mentioned your son's filter idea to my son-in-law and he said that DOES sound very interesting.
DeleteThank you very much for the lesson in cleaning computers! I have never done that and now with the laptop I wouldn't know how to clean that. However, I do indeed clean behind my refrigerator and clean the back of the refrigerator off. I don't do it often though....
ReplyDeletethat is such a good lesson.....my question is....does David make house calls in Arkansas? ha
ReplyDeleteno mam I don't vacuum my refrigerator although I'm sure in needs it very badly!!
I'll bet he'd love to visit some day. He does wish he could travel more often. He can't leave though because I need him around all the time.
DeleteI'll probably never do this, but good to know it can be done Kay! As for the refrigerator....
ReplyDeleteMy laptop made some fan noise...clunking at times. It had one month left on warranty, so I was able to send it away to be fixed. Paid only postage...whew
ReplyDeleteI'm suspicious when these devices get very hot. Now I'm worried about my Kindle Fire. It gets quite hot when I play solitare. No cooling pad or way to clean this device.
Our refrig is totally enclosed I think. No exposed coils to clean?
L. from W.
Gosh... I have no idea about the Fire. Art has one, but he hasn't complained about the heat yet. My iPhone on the other hand sometimes overheats for some reason.
DeleteGranted I like to speed tap when I play solitare so the cards are flipping rapidly and that might be causing the Fire to process faster than it should if that is possible. But I can do the very same thing on my husband's Google Nexus (yes I inherited his Fire since I got hooked on playing solitare and we were literally fighting over who uses it at night), and it doesn't heat up at all. The Nexus is quad core and far superior to the Kindle for about the same price.

I'm afraid to bring this subject up. Two new tasks might be added to my honey-do list. Chuckle.
ReplyDeleteWe just had to replace our computer tower. I don't know if dusting it would have made it last longer. Tom says it was really dusty. maybe we should do better with this new one. Thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteNot sure we will be moving the refrigerator, but if we do, out will come the vacuum cleaner.
Maintenance can be a joy of competence. What did tech-guy say about the sound? Everything has a service life, but caring for things as you do really helps to prolong that useful life. I agree: it is a sin to waste what we've been given to use. . . .
ReplyDeleteGood instructive post, Kay

No computer vacuuming around here, but Terry does vacuum behind the fridge every so often. Most refrigerators no longer have open coils on the back so there isn't much to vacuum.
ReplyDeleteNo, other than dust it every now and then I certainly do not vaccuum it. As for computers, no I don't do that either. I love your how to posts Kay, they are very useful. And aren't you lucky that you have IT guys in the family. My family ususally come to me, which is a very sad state of affairs give the little knowledge I have. I think they think she blogs therefore she must know something about computers, lol.
ReplyDeleteI should dust my furniture once a week, but I don't, so naturally, I don't ever dust the computers and refrigerators. When they break, we buy new ones. Lazy, huh?
ReplyDeleteDo I vaccum my refrigerator? Surely you jest.
ReplyDeleteI love it! Mr. Fix-it! We have two bar friges, no big one. I spose we oughtta clean them. sigh. another chore!
ReplyDeleteThat seems a lot easier than I thought...but I'd be afraid I'd break something. Same w/the fridge =)
