The Wonder of Skype

My cousin, Ricky and I had done everything humanly possible to get the Skype call established between Sendai and Hawaii.  Ricky works in China, but he went home to Sendai for the holidays to set up Skype at his mother's home in time for our Hawaii Cousins Party.  It was my dream to have the four sisters able to talk to each other face to face.

The Cousins Party had already been organized more than a month ago.  All the cousins brought their many special dishes.  We always plan for more than we need and everybody gets to bring home enough left overs for the following day's meal.  However, everybody outdid themselves on Saturday.

Auntie Grace made those sushi at the bottom which blew everybody away.  The sushi was made with hot dogs, and cucumbers in the center to form tulips.

There were crab casseroles, salsa and chips, macaroni salad, nishime, pumpkin soup, lumpia, chicken teriyaki, beef teriyaki sticks, shrimp tempura, noodles, kimpira gobo, peking duck, and tons of other food which I'm having a hard time recalling.  I was on edge trying to keep everything on schedule from the group photo, to dinner, to talking to everybody, to dessert, to Skype call, to making sure everybody got their take home containers to choose the food they would be bringing home...

Here's my nephew, Cody and brother, Dennis waiting in line to get their dinner.

Here I am with my amazing Uncle Toshi and the three sisters who really enjoyed all the amazing food.  Uncle Toshi is amazing himself.  Without glasses he's got 20/30 vision which Art says is better than his vision with glasses.  Uncle also has blood pressure and cholesterol levels that we probably had when we were five years old.  And he just happens to be  92 years old, or was it  93?

After our coco cream puffs, flan, chocolate haupia pie, chocolate banana pie, mochi desserts we went upstairs for the Skype video call.

My aunt was waiting in Sendai for the call.  It was 8 PM Saturday-Hawaiian time, 3 PM Sunday-Sendai time.

I was thrilled to see my cousin (Ricky's older brother) and his daughter also participating in the Skype call.

Each sister introduced her family to their youngest sister.

The Internet connection wasn't the best.

There was occasional feedback which sometimes garbled speech and a grainy picture coming from their side, but it was still wonderful.

Cousins and their children were finally able to meet relatives they had never seen before.  Since our daughter, Tiffany and her husband, Ed had given Art a high definition, super duper computer video camera for Fathers Day, I'm hoping the relatives in Japan had a good picture coming from our end.

Then all the cousins went back downstairs and the four sisters could spend a little time together at last.

I'm so glad the party was a success and we could finally give the sisters a chance to be together again.  Ricky e-mailed me to tell me his mother was now comfortable with Skype.  In fact, he'll now be able to talk to his family when he's away on his business trips.

I'm feeling pretty happy right now.

  2. The food was simply incredible. I can see why you were anxious for everything to go well, but it did, and the Skype call brought the sisters together for the first time in such a long while. Congratulations on a job well done!

  3. That was simply wonderful, Kay!!! Your party was truly a success. How happy the sisters and brother must have been to see their baby sister in Sendai. Chicken skin moment! I can't imagine doing the same with relatives in Korea, though when I see my aunt next month for lunch, I'll ask her if it would be possible. Of course, the relatives in Korea might not speak English...

    1. My mother's brother was not there in Sendai. He lives in Tokyo. I'm afraid he doesn't have anybody technologically able to get Skype going at his house. However... perhaps someday we can pull that off too.

  6. What a marvelous tale. I love the clever tulip sushi. I assume she used grape leaves to hole it together.

I am convinced that genes play a large role in how well we do as we age. I am envious. Everyone in your family seems to have great genes, especially your Uncle Toshi.

    1. The sushi is held together with nori (seaweed). I'm sure genes have a lot to do with aging and longevity. Uncle Toshi's family did have longevity going for them. He is married to my Aunt Dorothy, Mom's youngest sister in Hawaii. I wish I had his genes.

  7. Congratulations, Kay!! You did well. Nothing ventured nothing gained. It took a lot of planning and work, but you can rest in your efforts with pride and satisfaction. How I envy your positive spirit.

I like the tulip sushi w/hot dogs and cucumber. My guess is a little mayo too? I've got to try it one day. Thanks for sharing the idea.

My dad (89) has excellent cardiovascular health (low bp, cholesterol and glucose) but unfortunately I didn't inherit it. Whenever I go to the doctors they tell me thank your mom and dad...yeah right I think it has to do with mental stress...my dad never worries.

  11. I'm glad your first Skype session went well, but I think the neatest part is that now your aunt can navigate the software and keep in touch with her family on her own!

  13. This is an amazing story of our time--2012. Although I tend to be a little on the anti-tech side, I can see all the happiness that was going on by the smiles on people's faces. ---Henry Hank Chapin

  19. That's where computers and modern technology can really benefit us. There are plenty of times when I curse it, but what a wonderful occasion this must have been for all of you. The food looks great too, though I haven't a clue what most of it actually is!

  22. Enjoyed your photos. I, too, enjoy Skype -- allows communicating with bro on Big Island, family on East Coast and in Midwest, including year old or so grandson. Wonderful!

Understand you're transferring color slides which I intend to do also in future. Will be interested in specifics and process. Hope it's improved since last I checked as seemed quite tedious to be certain they were clean, etc.

    1. It is tedious in that you do have to blow on some of the slides and some even need to be wiped a little, but it's not too awful. I can scan 4 slides at a time which is helpful.

  23. A very poignant story.
What a contrast to the time when if you moved countries, the only communication ever again was handwritten letters, with the possibility that at some time many decades hence, an as yet unborn nephew or cousin would for some reason travel overseas & briefly visit, with a "your grandmother (or whoever) says hello", or "I'm your little sister's youngest child."
