Watching the Olympics

I admit it.  I'm not a sports fan. I don't understand football except that I know you're supposed to get the ball to the goal area on the other side except when they change sides.  I don't understand soccer.  Everybody is kicking the ball all over the field until they get it passed that person who is trying not to get hurt but has to use his/her body to stop the puck, I mean ball from getting into that big basket.  I know basketball is getting the ball in the basket, but they change sides too which confuses me.

I do actually understand baseball a bit more because my son, Jon played baseball for several summers and Art coached the team for a couple of them.  I know what it takes to get a point, I mean goal, I mean hit, I mean run. And there was something about flies in the infield.

I do however, understand swimming because both Tif and Jon were very good swimmers in middle and high school.

Jon was even a co-captain for his water polo team.  I take it back.  I don't understand water polo at all.

With the summer Olympics underway, it brings back those memories of watching Tif and Jon swim back and forth, back and forth, back and forth across the pool.  Then there would be a break and they'd swim back and forth, back and forth, back and forth again.

And you know what?  We loved it!  I loved watching every minute of the back and forthing.  (Aquettes was more fun though.)  Therefore, I'll be watching the Olympic swimming with Art and holding my breath too!

  2. I think I understand proper football as my father was a great fan of the game, though I never really watch these days. But American football, rugby, baseball etc leave me completely confused, as do netball, volleyball, rounders, handball, table tennis and anything else played with a ball or shuttlecock. I used to swim at county level and never really enjoyed it, so was glad when I had to give up for O level work. But I'll be watching any sport tht's on the television when the Olympics gets started, and enjoy the lot. It's just good to watch people who are good at what they do.

    1. Oh that's so hilarious! Canadians are too nice to throw anybody out of the country.

  4. Well, at least with swimming, they aren't intentionally bashing their bodies into each other and getting hurt. I like hockey because it's fast, and they have enough padding to not get hurt...sometimes. DrumMajor

    1. They don't have padding on their faces much, right? Don't they have missing teeth?

  5. You didn't watch the Miami Heat vs the OKC Thunder during the NBA Finals? How could you not? It was so exciting!

My favorite sport at the Olympics (summer and winter) is gymnastics, with diving close behind.

    1. My kids didn't do basketball or diving so I don't understand those sports at all. I do enjoy gymnastics though. NBA? I don't think I even watched Michael Jordan much when we were living in Chicago... except when the Bulls won the whatever for the umpteenth time.

  6. I'm not much of a sports fan either, but I do like swimming and used to watch skating.

  7. I'm with you on sports although I do understand a little more of the games-it seems ridiculous to have a winner and a loser whether it's a team or individual competition...

  10. Watching the Olympics on television is going to be the best way to watch. I fear it will be carnage in London - goodness knows it's busy enough at normal times.

  12. Oh, yes, I was glued to the television cheering on Phelps.

Nope, the pineapple is too acidic for me, darn it.

  13. I don't watch sports usually. I don't think I'll watch the Olympics either. We're not much of a sports family. I'm sure glad our son takes an interest though and is diligent about signing his sons in extracurricular sports.

    1. I am the ONLY one in our family who doesn't understand sports. The kids took after Art and greatly enjoy watching others exert themselves and love to exert themselves too.

  14. I almost never watch any kind of sports, but did enjoy the swim teams last time. I am hoping NBC broadcasts the dressage horse competitions this year. Anne Romney's horse is a contender for the US. Fascinating to watch the prancing horses. Dianne

  15. Kay, you are too funny!
I guess you know I like sports. I can watch just about anything, even golf! but I really only follow football and football/soccer these days. Between the two, it's year round almost.
I like to watch the Olympics - any sport, all sports. I do get provoked and annoyed by the drama attached to gymnastics and figure skating.

    1. You know, Linda... My son did play soccer for a while, but I still didn't know what the heck everybody was doing. It was like one giant melee to me.

  16. I understand most sports and enjoy many of them. It's a good thing, too, because in Arkansas, if you aren't a Razorback fan, people think something is wrong with you. Ha! I love the summer Olympics and can't wait to watch. It's so exciting for the participants representing their countries. Looking forward to it!

  17. I can totally relate with this post of yours. Way back when i was still a youngster, given that i am a girl, i am not really interested in basketball, but since my uncle was one of the players, i did watched the game. Sweet me, i cheered for him all through the match.

    1. Good for you! I'll bet you understand the game. That makes it more fun. I know your uncle was happy you were cheering for him. I don't suppose your uncle was Michael Jordan. If so, tell him I was cheering for him too. :-)

  18. Hey, isn't the reply section new on your comments page or have I just failed to notice it? Love swimming but not watching...love swimming myself. It has been years since I've been in the water and I crave it so. Hard to believe we live on the lake and don't even go swimming there.

    1. Yes, this is new. I like the idea of being able to respond to questions a blogger friend asked directly under the question they asked.
