I can't understand it.
I'm the only one around here who gets these huge welts. Something is biting me. I think it's happening at night, but why just me? Art hasn't gotten them and neither has my mother.
Art once even checked my clothes to see if the biter was still around. It wasn't. I've checked the bedding. Nothing.
Whatever the case, these welts are awful and extremely itchy! I've gotten them on my arms, legs, under my arms (good grief!), my neck.... arghhh! It can take a week for the aggravation to subside.
I guess this will remain a mystery for a while. Have you ever gotten these?

ICK! I hate that kind of thing. You don't have mosquitos do you?
ReplyDeleteI have had those a time or two. I don't like the way the skin is all pink around it, Kay. I wonder if it's some kind of spider bite? Maybe a trip to the doctor is in order...
ReplyDeleteyou are just too sweet...
ReplyDeleteYikes, Kay....you are popular with something. I agree with DJan above that it might be worth having the doctor check them out.
ReplyDeleteInsects don't bite me, I am not tasty I suppose. This is probably a silly question, but as you have been traveling lately, do you think bed bugs are an issue? Supposedly we can acquire them in hotels. Dianne
ReplyDeletePlllleeease don't let it be bedbugs. I doubt it though. I should think Art would be bitten also.
DeleteTo the doctor I would go the next time one of these appears. It definitely looks like a bite from the outside rather than something rising to the surface from within your body. Have you tried bug bombing your house just in case some mean little bugs are hiding, waiting for dark before coming out to chew on you? Don't some people feed their dogs garlic to keep fleas from biting them. You may need to start eating garlic. I fear though that might not only repell the bugs but Art as well.
ReplyDeleteYou may neer know. If they get worse, or if there is a target shape to the rash, go to Doctors. It may be spider or a reaction to something.Sometimes it takes a while for the bites to show so whatever it was may be long gone.As far as bed bugs, perish the thought, I read bed bug bites tend to be in a line of three bites in a row, weird but a good way to check what it may be. This article says some people will not show any signs while sensitive people get small bump and red welts. http://www.whatdobedbugslooklike.net/bed-bug-bite-symptoms.html.
ReplyDeleteI would try cortizone and benadryl on the bites.
Good luck with stopping the culprit!
Most mysterious, my friend. I'd go to see a doctor if I were you. On the other hand, I'm me, and I sometimes get mysterious welts that look like bites with no center, and I haven't seen the doctor about it yet. Once it's gone, I forget about it (really, I forget) and am surprised all over again when another one appears. I've been checked for Alzheimer's (don't have it) but not for the mysterious welts.
ReplyDeleteK
wonder if it's an allergy?
ReplyDeleteI had similar-looking bites once. My dermatologist determined that it was from bird mites. Probably coming from an abandoned nest, the mites are so tiny that you can't really see them. Like you, I'm the only one in my household who got bit. I never did go through any extensive eradication process other than washing the bedding in hot water.
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting. My neighbor keeps feeding the pigeons who then roost on our roof above our bedroom waiting for him to come out. Hmmmm... Could it be??? Thank you so much for your help!
DeleteFeeding pigeons in Hawaii is like feeding rat. No need. Pigeons are not all that benign either. There is a disease in the Ohio River Valley area where I used to live that has been connected to pigeons somehow: histoplasmosis. I'm not saying that's what you have because I don't know the symptoms, just that pigeons are pests, particularly if he's feeding them and they're roosting on your roof. By the way, I'm not sure that feeding pigeons is legal.
DeleteOh my, that is a very large welt. At first I thought it was on your arm, but read your caption....it is on your thigh!! I would see a doctor. So many mysterious infections are around. Best to be treated when the problem is manageable. I once had fungus like rings all over my back and upper front, on my chest and upper arms. Via email with my primary care physician, he recommended Lamisil over the counter and when that did not clear it in two weeks I made an appointment. The nurse immediately confirmed it must be a bad case of ringworm. Doctor was sure Lamisil should have done the trick, because it didn't he ordered a skin biopsy. The dermatologist confirmed it to be "numular eczema", coin shaped patches that appear for no known reason. I was given a cortisone shot and the rings disappeared. Now it reappeared on my left calf and only there. But it sure fooled everyone.

Sorry for the spelling error. Nummular eczema. It started out as a tiny red dot that wouldn't go away and eventually grew like an irritated bite. I don't think you have nummular. If it was bed bugs, wouldn't Art get bitten too?
DeleteL. from W.
I'm pretty sure it's not bedbugs.... at least I hope so. That would be awful!
DeleteSomething likes you alot!
ReplyDeleteDon't wear perfume for awhile or strongly scented stuff.
Take the pic and or/thigh to the doc or NP, along with the rest of your body.
Caladryl lotion dabbed on the spots should help.
Claritin (loratidine) 10 mg is a non-drowsy very tiny pill for allergies; over the counter.
Benadryl 25 mg pills are for allergies but can make you very sleepy or drowsy; over the counter.
If it's a whelt and not just a bite, that's a strong reaction to the thing that likes you.
I'd be tempted to go with the bird mite theory, but why are you specifically so tasty?
I'd be good to figure it out, as you may eventually react with throat swelling...
Keep taking pics, and have Art take some from the side to show the height of the whelt.
Had a patient in the ER in Kansas who'd traveled near an ocean and got sea mites.....
Good luck, DrumMajor
I am also very popular prey for bugs. Mosquitoes love me and yes, I get great big welts that itch for a week.
ReplyDeleteMore serious are the spider bites I've had, which look like that bite of yours does. They have to be watched because sometimes they get infected, and the wrong kind of spider can be poisonous.
Did you get bites like this in Chicago, or is this a new, local Hawaiian menace?
My 4 year old granddaughter has eczema, which looks like your skin. Get checked by a dermatologist at Tripler, Kay. Why wait?
ReplyDeleteThat's a pretty literal-minded program blogspot is using. I put my nickname in quotation marks for my pigeon conbtribution and it butchered my name.
ReplyDeleteBlogspot is really doing some strange things since the Interface change. Sheesh!
DeleteI get bites like these, too, and Ken doesn't. I put anti-itch ointment on them and wait it out. Eventually they go away. I had a really bad case of this while in China on one trip. Never did find out the cause, just scratched and scratched and bided my time. I guess insects prefer me over Ken. Lucky me!
ReplyDeletePigeons roosting over your bedroom so could be the lice from them. I've had that happen where the neighbors fed the pigeons and we had lots of them roosting. I got bit first before the rest of my family got bit. You'll have to try getting your neighbor to stop feeding them. Try finding out if they are breaking some kind of law and then you can either start by approaching them yourself or you can set in motion action from your city. Then you will have to clean up the area they are pooping on up there and put up a contraption that has long nails facing up to make it not easy for them to roost on. If they are making a nest in a shelf or hole maybe you can plug it up using spray foam insulation. I had huge amounts of pigeon poop scooped out of my gutters when I hired gutter cleaners. After they cleaned my gutters the lice got stired up and worse immediately after. I washed all bedding, steam cleaned the carpets, clean all the windows and put planet dishwashing liquid in a sprayer attached to the water hose. Used that soapy spray to wash the outside off the house (including the windows) and the patios and the plants in the yard that was near the house. The plants did not seem to be harmed by the dishwashing soap. I dont think it was enough to hurt the plants but good enough to dry up those fleas.

Aggravation!!! I was really not wanting to tell the neighbor anything... but looks like I'm going to have to. I'd hate to have to clean my roof. It's way too high. We probably do have loads of pigeon poop in our gutters since they like to frequent that area.
DeleteKay, I hope you don't have as much of a problem that you have to do all that cleaning that I had to do. But in my case the neighbor was causing a problem for many many neighbors and so many of us had to hire people to clean the mess they made. The pigeons clogged our gutters and we also had weeds growing from the gutters from the seeds the neighbors feed them, and rain spilling out when it rained. The road by the home that was raising them often had dead birds because they would get run over by cars. I think they dead bird issue got the city on the case right away. I don't know how many people contacted the city about the pigeons but once I called and told them about the dead birds I was told I was not the only one calling in in with the issue and they got on it right away because soon after the bird population started to reduce.
DeleteFor us once they were told by the city they were in trouble they stopped feeding them. I suspect they captured a lot of them and ate them or sold them to restaurant. I think the neighbors were raising them to sell for food because of how much they were feeding them. It looked like they put out a whole large dish pan worth of food every day. Meanwhile we all had to clean up the mess they caused and discourage the pigeons from roosting. We did not have to put spiked strips. Though some people had to. Other people put plastic owls on their roofs. I don't know if that worked but it is supposed to scare them and keep them away.
~L.
The guy that cleaned our gutters and cleaned out the nest showed us a can of spray foam insulation and told us to go buy one and he would put it where they were nesting after he removed the nesting and washed the roof. That was the solution for are particular roof. We don't have as many birds now, no pigeions.
Delete~L.
There are other neighbors who are unhappy about the birds, but also haven't had the heart or nerve to tell this neighbor to quit feeding them. One neighbor in particular said he doesn't like the fact that the pigeons are eating from their dog's food bowl and possibly dropping lice/mites there.
DeleteI'm late getting here today, I read all the comments, I would check out the pigeon thing, I'm the one in this family for rashes and itches, looks like hives but maybe its bites, I never heard of the pigeon lice but I don't like them!
ReplyDeleteI know it's not hives because I do get hives when I'm over-tired. This has a definite spot where the bite occurred.
DeleteYup, looks just like a severe reaction to a spider bite to me. Yes, have your doc check the next one out.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is... I don't see any small spiders around here. We do have larger spiders that I dislike but not too much in our area. I thought maybe it could be ants. But I don't usually get a reaction like this from ant bites. My mom does though.
DeleteI think some of us are more susceptible to bites than others. That would explain why you are bitten, if these are bites, while others are not. I would see the doctor. Also, topical creams do help. I use caladryl. I think the others may be on to something when they mention some kind of mites. The doctor will most likely know what is causing the reaction, but more importantly, they will advise you on treatment.
ReplyDeleteGosh! I haven't used Caladryl in such a long time. I'm going to put some in my medicine cabinet. I'm thinking the mites sound quite plausible.
DeleteI had bites like that years ago from bird mites/lice. They are very very tiny, but I could feel them. We found a bird nest on our electrical box towards the front of the house infested with little bugs. (Our room was in the back of the house) Husband didn't get any bites. Two other families had the same experience and only the females of the house experienced the bites.
ReplyDeleteYvonne, Class of 67'
Hello Yvonne... Now I'm wondering which Yvonne you are. :-) I'm strongly thinking it's bird mites. Art thinks it might be coming into my office. Hmmmm...
DeleteOh Kay that is horrible. I find the older I get the more sensitive I am to allergies etc. I bet it is mites of some type. It is hard trying to identify the cause. I guess the important thing is getting a diagnosis and perhaps your doctor has seen something similar. Take Care and let us know.
ReplyDeletePoor Kay. I know how it is.
ReplyDeleteIn my last bout with bites last week I found a new way to relieve the itching: washing with a tea tree oil body wash that I had from Australia, followed by covering the bites with a Dead Sea hand cream containing aloe vera, olive oil, chamomile, and tea tree extract.
Good luck.
