Quaker Oats Project

We do have a garbage disposal in our sink.  We just don't like to use it.  We've had our drain  pipes clog from carrot peelings, etc. and just don't want to add more junk to our sewer system.  Therefore we prefer collecting our garbage in plastic bags and disposing it in our weekly garbage collection that gets sent to HECO (Hawaiian Electric Company) to be burned and turned into energy or sent directly to a landfill.

However, the plastic bags look ugly in the sink, so we like to throw them into empty milk cartons or Quaker Oats oatmeal containers.  The only thing is... well... I don't like how they look.  The Quaker Oats container is great because it has a hard plastic ring at the top where I can bang my drain strainer.

Today, we bought some Con-Tact self-adhesive shelf paper and I wrapped the cardboard oatmeal container with it.

I even covered the top so that I can seal it prettily at night.  That way the ants or other scavenging creatures can't get in.

Now when I look at the sink, I have to smile.  The water-resistant paper has a marble like look and blends in with the counter top.

Tiffany tells me that you can also decorate the oatmeal container in even prettier paper and make it a head band holder for your granddaughter.

Hmmmmm.....

  1. We've never had a sink garbage disposal, though my parents did in one of their houses, and I don't know of anyone who has one now. It's good to see that the old primary school teacher skills are still going strong.

  2. I'm going to try that idea...thanks. We don't like to use our garage disposal either...

  3. It does look very nice now, Kay. I don't use my disposal much either, but it's nice to run lemon peels through it now and then to freshen it.

  4. You come up with such clever ideas. You were either Heloise in your former life or a teacher. Dianne

  5. Headband holder...great ideas. We compost our peelings. And I often forget to run the disposal at least once a day. Whenever I make a bleach solution for the dish cloths, I run the waste water thru the disposal.

    1. Uh oh! Are we supposed to run the disposal at least once a day. We almost never turn it on. That's a good idea to bleach the dish cloths.

  6. You are ever the patient, inventive teacher. Now, instead of a classroom of younger kids, you've got a worldwide classroom....powerful stuff. Good idea. I've seen store-bought versions of these, but your's is better. DrumMajor

    1. Now I'm looking for other things to cover since I've got a whole roll still left. :-)

  7. That is a clever idea Kay. And Tiffany is right there are countless ways it could be used. Contact paper completely changes how it looks. I put my food scraps back in my garden. Great for the soil.

  8. That is a good idea. Being able to bang the sink drainer on the top is really great. I save my kitchen scarps too. They used to go in the compost until the dog got in it and my husband insisted that I stop using the compost. Now I just throw it out. The oatmeal box is just brilliant.

  9. We compost most of our kitchen scraps. I use a plain white 2 quart(?) cottage cheese container with a lid, and run it through the dishwasher every once in a while.

  10. Though we have a yard, we don't compost anything due to bad childhood memories. Dad used to throw garbage into a hole in the ground, and sometimes we would see chicken bones sticking up. Ugh! So we definitely use a garbage disposal daily.

    1. Unfortunately we don't have room for a compost pile on our property. We used to have one in Illinois, but sadly not here.

  11. I noticed the emerging Heloise of Hawaii Kay's identity also. The only helpful hint I ever devised was to use dental floss when sewing up canvas and heavier materials. Dental floss fits into some needles surprisingly smoothly and it is rather flexible and easy to use.You copuld also use it for sewing up your pit bull's wounds and save on vet bills as well. :-)
