I love my desktop computer. I've always preferred it to Art's laptop. I like my 25" monitor because I don't have to use glasses to see the text and I can see pictures enlarged. I like the feel of a larger ergonomic keyboard. I like having my USB hub where I can attach multiple stuff. I like having larger speakers attached so the sound is clearer. They're old cranky speakers but they still do the job nicely.
Art often comes to use my desktop because it has more space on it. My desktop is also much faster. I feel we need to get another desktop so we can both work on one, especially when we have guests staying in my office.
People are telling me that the desktop is old school and that the laptop is more versatile. My son-in-law is telling me that he can attach a ergonomic keyboard to a laptop and a larger monitor also. He says laptops are the wave of the future and are now just as capable as desktops.
It must be because when we went to the BX, Sam's Club and Costco, they had a HUGE assortment of laptops, but very few desktops.
I'm thinking laptops would break faster since they're so tiny and are probably more difficult to fix. And don't laptops heat up more? When my desktop monitor failed HP sent me a new one. Thank goodness it was still under warranty that time! When I ran out of space on the desktop, my son-in-law put in more memory. I think that's what he did. However, will desktops become obsolete?
I don't want to be stubborn about wanting a desktop. What to do? What to do?
Do you have an opinion on this?

I so love my laptop. This is my second one and will replace when it dies with a third. I like being able to pack and carry!
ReplyDeleteWhen my desk top became outdated, my son-in-law replaced just the hard drive. When I wanted a larger monitor, my son-in-law ordered a larger one. I guess I like the fact that you can replace parts of the computer, not the whole thing.
DeleteI think it's what you're used to and if you like the desk top more, you should stick to that. I have gotten used to my laptop and wouldn't trade back. Hope you find a solution you like!
ReplyDeleteI think you're very right. It's just our own comfort level. Sigh...
DeleteA 25" monitor--I can't even imagine! I am on my third computer but not one has been a desktop. In fact, I've never even had a proper laptop, only the smaller notebook computers.
ReplyDeleteFor flying it has to fit into my carry-on backpack and be light weight. And have a white keyboard, for my eyes. The price of notebooks is just a few hundred dollars.
But you're right, some laptops get uncomfortably hot on the wrists. Compare user reviews for that before buying.
You can use speakers on a laptop. My keyboard is plenty big and comfortable.
Good luck, Kay. We should be happy we have choices these days. How could we ever be mothers and grandmothers of live-away kids without computers and Internet?
I love the fact that when my desktop became old, Ed (son-in-law) was able to upgrade just the hard drive. With a laptop, you'd have to buy a whole new one. Art's previous laptop suddenly could only open half way. Ed checked it recently and said a hair thin wire had broken and couldn't be repaired. It's going in the trash.
DeleteI love my laptop but use my desktop more for the same reasons-it's easier to see, cooler and holds more. But I'd be lost without my laptop when traveling or teaching classes. I need BOTH!
ReplyDeleteYuuuup! That's what I'm thinking.
DeleteI also have both, a 19" desktop and a 13" laptop, my new MacBook Air. I can see how I could forget all about my desktop now that I see what a new, modern laptop is like. And it doesn't get hot and is simply wonderful. If my desktop dies, I will get a larger monitor to hook up my desktop and just use this. The keyboard is not ergonomic, but then again I don't need one; if I did it could be hooked up. I use the laptop now for FaceTime with my sister, where I used to use the desktop.
ReplyDeleteWow! It doesn't get hot? That's great! Art's laptop always gets hot and he unplugs it.
DeleteWe only use laptops now Kay, that and iphones seem to be the way of the future!
ReplyDeleteI do LOVE my iPhone. :-)
DeleteHi Kay --
ReplyDeleteI've never had a laptop, but I don't travel.
I notice 20-somethings all scrunched up on the couch cross-legged or slouching in a recliner with their laptops. I would be in pain so quickly compared to the limber youngsters. I predict they will like a chair and a desktop as they get older.
When traveling with the youngsters, they take a laptop. They can check on potential tourist spots or restaurants, all while we're blabbing about it in the hotel room.
My son's vet school issues a laptop to them, and it's pretty complete. All classes, agendas, lessons, teacher communications are on it. He can whiz through personal stuff on it too.
I like checking my desktop during the day, and I like the big screen and my big bamboo keyboard.
I can't figure why I would need a laptop....maybe you should try to live with Art's laptop and not touch your desktop for a few days and see what you think.
Don't let guilt force you to a laptop! DrumMajor
I guess the bottom line is that we already have a laptop for traveling. I just want Art to have his own desktop so he doesn't keep using mine. Bamboo? Hmmm... intriguing.
DeleteI have a desktop in the kitchen and a laptop I use mainly in the family room. The desktop is getting older. We have a friend who owns his own computer business. He's built the last few computers we've bought, and we were able to get exactly what we wanted. If you decide to go the desktop route you might go that route.
ReplyDeleteWe did consider having it made, but my son-in-law doesn't quite have the time to do that for us.
DeleteI have two laptops an HP and a Sony Vaio, I use my Dell desk top computer for everything. I hate the keys on the laptop. I have arthritis in my fingers and need the ergonomic keyboard. I set up one of my laptops in my study with its own monitor and ergonomic keyboard, but why bother?
ReplyDeleteI have the other laptop in a backpack I took to class. I tried to use it in class, but ended up using a pen and paper so I could keep up with the professor.
Laptops are great for kids. I don't think older folks will like them very long if at all. Dianne

We are leaning toward a Dell desktop right now.... We'll see what my techie son-in-law says.
DeleteWe have two MSI laptops. Our first laptop was HP. It died a few months after warranty, so that was a complete $600+ waste. No more HP for us. On the second MSI, we purchased a special 4yr (at 3yr cost) extended warranty at Office Depot. Lately husband has been complaining that his laptop is hot all the time, luckily we have the extended warranty. I had to fix a loud fan problem with my MSI laptop and it was covered by the one year original warranty. Despite the problems, we love our laptops too much to go back to desktop. I love the mobility and knowing I can pack up and go to any room in the house or sit outside. When I'm sick, I can lie in my bed and still have my computer.
ReplyDeleteL. from W.
We'll always have a laptop. I just thought a desktop was better for heavy duty work. I hate making these decisions because you know how crazy we get with making decisions.
DeleteWe have both. Each has its drawbacks and benefits, but I must admit that we use the desktop most of the time.
ReplyDeleteSigh... me too!
DeleteI haven't used a desktop for years. I had an IBM laptop for years while I was working. Then, I switched to a MacBook Pro laptop about four years ago. I love it! I have been thinking of getting a desktop to use for more serious writing that I want to do because of the keyboard. Instead, I think I will just attach an ergonomic keyboard. I find the desktops too big. When I have to use my husband's iMac desktop, I get a sore neck. I just like having my own little laptop. My husband, on the other hand, does not like my laptop. He bought a iPad for portability. He love that. I seldom use the iPad because I like my laptop more. It is just a very individual preference.
ReplyDeleteI think you've hit the nail on the head. It's really what you're comfortable with.
DeleteNot only are desk tops no longer in vogue, but laptops will soon be going the same way. Disk drives will be unheard of and the iPad type of computer will become more prevalent. I use my phone as a computer when I travel. I love my 17 inch Macbook Pro for the work I do. If I was still producing a yearbook, though, I would attach a bigger monitor.
ReplyDeleteThere are so many choices today that it's really incredible. It makes it harder to make a decision.
Deletewe have both but I'm with you on the size issue .I like the big screen, our lap top has a 16 inch screen but the lap top screen is 23 and its much better.
ReplyDeleteI have had to start a new blog, I hope you will find me, I have called it when the bough broke!
Thank goodness I was able to find you by clicking on your name which took me to your new blog. What a shame that a virus killed your original blog when you were visiting another blog. Yikes!
Deletewell..I used to use desktop but now I'm using laptop.
ReplyDeleteI do use both, but I really prefer my desktop because I have a bigger monitor and more memory.
Deletenever use a laptop. Wasn't even aware of the laptop trend.
ReplyDeleteJust talked to someone at Best Buy. He said what I already knew. It's easier to fix a desk top than a laptop. He also said a desk top was faster. My son-in-law would disagree. He says laptops have really improved lately.
DeleteKay- Vivitar has a bamboo keyboard (buttons and base area made with bamboo,) and the mouse is a curved cut section also. Found it in a catalog for around $100 (yeah, goofy) but I really like the look of it, and the keys are amazingly light with no noise. MicroCenter said they carried them but I hadn't seen them on their catalog. My son researched and ordered up my computer's innards from Micro Center, and I picked up the parts, and he then built it for me. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like so much fun! Bamboo would be perfect for Hawaii too. :-)
DeleteDO please yourself! And DO keep posting!

I'll do my best. :-)
DeleteI love my laptop. We've not had a desktop for years. I like to use my laptop when I'm in bed, or resting and it's got everything in the one place so when I'm travelling it's exactly the same as when I have it at home. I also have an iPad which I LOVE, it travels all around the house with me so I can follow recipes or patterns, listen to audio books, surf. I bought Apple TV so that I can see my iPad through the television when I want to watch catch-up TV or films, or look at photographs, or see things larger. You can get replacement screens and upgraded hard drives and memory for laptops too, at least you can with Apple. I'd never go back to a desktop, but I think you should have the choice to have what you want.
ReplyDeleteSigh... I know Apples are great, but they're so much more expensive.
DeleteI just bought a new 14" laptop, which I am now using to type this on my lap in my recliner. But I agree with you. I find my desktop to be much more comfortable to type on, to use sitting at my desk, and for larger, better quality pictures. My laptop is a convenience, my desktop is my office.
ReplyDeleteThat's the thing really. I like the desktop with the larger monitor when I'm working on my photo album publishing and photo type work. Sigh... we'll see what happens.
DeleteKay, I know you think Apples are expensive (and they are), but you get Apple's warranty and if you have an Apple store nearby, you have a genius to help you. Apple computers are really tough also. I had them at school and they always outlasted the PCs. However, the district sold their soul to Microsoft and Hewlett Packard and would not allow me to buy Macs, even though I had my own money from a grant I wrote. Besides, don't you have an iPhone? By now, I would think, you have seen just how great that little device can be. All of Apple's products are that great.
ReplyDeleteI had a Mac in school and I agree it was wonderful. However, my brother and son-in-law are the techies in the family and only know how to fix PCs. Sigh...
DeleteBottom line is getting something you want to use. Even if desk tops are becoming obsolete, who cares? That is a better reason to get one now if you like them! There will be replacement parts and what not for a long time. If Art is always using yours, sounds like it is something you two would like. Go for it.
ReplyDeleteI do love my laptop because it is portable. I don't have a desk I can use right now and I like to take it places with me, such as travel or to the coffe shop. I like having my stuff on my computer and not just use the family laptop on trips. However, I am buying a large desktop Mac from a friend who is going away to school and I think I will love the giant 27" screen for movies, photos, etc.
Yes, I do believe desk tops are great for fixing. A new monitor is easy to get or adding more hardrive. Laptops don't seem to last as long and it is a harder or impossible to fix when certain things on it break- like the screen or keyboard. Desktops usually can have lareger memory sor photos. I store all my photos on our family desktop and they back up from there to an external harddrive.
My laptop is super fast and does not get hot. However, the keyboard feels like several buttons may break and to fix it- it is under warranty so I need to send the whole thing in!!
Thanks so much for your input, Denise. You've put all my thoughts in a nutshell. I do believe we're going with a Dell desktop for all the reasons you mentioned.
DeleteYes, I too prefer the comfort of my PC. I have a laptop but rarely use it prefering the flexiblity of the desktop.
ReplyDeleteDecision made! We just ordered our Dell desktop on line from Costco.
DeleteI would highly recommend either an ASUS, Lenovo or a Toshiba laptop. These three brands have been ranked the top 3 for reliability in the last few years. This means they will on average last 5-6 years without any major issues. I personally have an ASUS and they come with a standard 2-year warranty, if you want more you can always pay for extended protection.
ReplyDeleteHP is now ranked number 5 for reliability while Dell is not even on the top 5 list. I highly suggest staying away from Dell as I have had to fix so many of them for friends.
Thank you for your input Arlen. I really appreciate it. We did have a Toshiba laptop that ended up giving us problems. The Lenovo laptop we have is working out just fine. We've never used an Asus, but I'm glad to get your opinion. We ended up buying a Dell desktop which is working out great.
Deletevery good post
