I Love Skype

My daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter gave me their Mother's Day wishes.  My brother and his family were here to celebrate the happy day, but I hadn't heard from my son.

Jon is in Ecuador right now trying to bone up on his Spanish with Sarah.  I wasn't expecting to hear from him, but felt a little sad about it.  In fact I hadn't heard from him in a couple of weeks.  Ah well... I figured he forgot the holiday since he was in a foreign country.

I was awfully busy all day and never had a chance to get on the computer.  Before going to bed, I decided to check my e-mail and there was his name with Mother's Day wishes.  It's amazing how much it lifted my spirits.  He said he and Sarah had been mountain climbing and would Skype with me the following day.

And they did.  He said they were surprised that Mother's Day is a big holiday in Ecuador and traffic was really congested.  How interesting that Mother's Day is celebrated on the same day in Ecuador.

They'll be returning to the U.S. at the end of summer to begin their grad school work.

I must say, seeing Jon and Sarah on Skype made Mother's Day complete for me.

I'm very happy.

  1. Jon might have felt a little lonely too, with all of the big celebration reminders around him! Wonder where else it's celebrated, much less on the same day? I think Canada's was last week. Good kids. My kid called, then we discussed more wedding details. DrumMajor

  2. A sweet picture of a sweet couple. Really, what did we do before Skype saved us?

  3. I wish Maria and I had Skype. Is it expensive? I would use it to talk to Julia -- who lives about 8 miles from me and whom I don't see very often. Maybe I should just telephone her once a week.

  4. I talk with my sister three times a week using video chat (we both have Macs so we use either iChat or FaceTime), but I also have Skype on my computer. The picture isn't as good as it is with the other two, but I'll use it in a pinch. Skype is free, Gigi and available on any computer, with video if you have a camera on it. It's so much better when I can see her! It's like being there, isn't it Kay?

  5. When our son first went to Japan we would go two or three weeks without hearing from him. It was amazing how much brighter my day was once I heard his voice on the phone.

  6. It's always nice to hear from your children or visit with them...

  7. Gigi: Skype is free! You might want to learn how to use it. Terry uses it some to talk to people he consults with. We don't care for it that much, for some reason. We prefer staying in touch via e-mail, phone calls and texting.

  8. Awww....yup I'm the same way. I feel sad on Mother's Day until they call.

  9. I'm with you Kay. It would be very sad if there were no way to see our children and grandchildren when they are far away. I got to Face Time with mine on each coast, and since my mother was with me she got to see everyone too. It is lots nicer than just a phone call--especially if there are little ones.

  12. I'm so glad Jon checked in with you. Wandering sons can nag at our worry center. We need to know where they are and how they are.

  13. I understand that! I loved being able to Skype with my son Jon when he and his wife and son were in Bangladesh for a year and a half. I don't know what I would have done without that wonderful technological tool. I could see him and know whether or not he was looking well. I could see my grandson grow. It was wonderful.

  15. Blogger just tossed out my comment because of someone simultaneously editing the post. Was it you, Kay? Anyway, I mentioned that I emailed the website to Maria and will use Skype on my laptop, as it has a mike and camera. mahalo!

    1. No, I wasn't editing this post, but I was publishing something. How strange! Sheesh! Blogger is still working out the kinks since they did the overhaul of the interface. It's irritating, but it's free.

It'll be great when you can get on Skype. KC never feels like she doesn't know us well, because she sees us every couple of days.

  17. What a lovely way to end the day, especially with having felt a bit disappointed earlier in the day. Smiles all over my face here...

    Glad to hear
