Young vs. Old (er)

I have now caught a cold.  I'm feeling extremely draggy.  I woke up with a headache.  I almost never get headaches.  I have a cough that is threatening to get worse.  The last time I caught a cold was when we took that trip to California in November of 2010.  My brother, Dennis has had a cold now for a couple of weeks, but he has to go to work since the work is piled up at the police station.  He looks and sounds terrible the brief times I've seen him.  He's avoiding us right now to make sure mom doesn't get his germs.

When my son, Jon and Sarah were here for three weeks she caught a cold too.  She had a miserable cough and still wasn't 100% recovered when they left for South America.

And yet, here I am lying in bed, not going to Zumba and just exhausted.   When Sarah was here, they went swimming, surfing, scuba diving, rock climbing, hiking, hamster balling... you name it.  We tried to tell them they should take it easy, but Sarah was determined to do everything.  I think they may have slowed down for half a day and then off they were again.

Art told me last night I should remember that the kids are half our age.  Really?

Is this how we were when we were young?  I don't know.  I can't remember.

  1. Aw poor Kay. So many people I know, including me, are coughing for the longest time and can't shake it. I hope your cold will be of normal duration and not go on for months.
I find it makes me cope better to get out and do a few things rather than let the cold drag me down by staying in (or in bed) too much.

You can't remember how to compare [re your last lines] because you and I never had so many opportunities for adventure activities when we were Jon and Sarah's age.

    Be well!

  2. Dear Kay,
    Sorry you don't feel well.
Get plenty of rest, drink fluids and read my blog! There, all that will take care of your cold. (Or at least, my blog will help to put you to sleep!)

  3. It's no fun to be sick. You even blog, though, when you're not feeling well, and have no problem making it interesting. I hope you get better soon and back to your usual dynamic self. :-)

  8. Isn't it awful to get sick? Luckily, all I had in early March was that cough. No fever, no headache, no aches and pain. It did take 3 weeks to get over it, though. Hope you feel better soon!

  9. Colds - respiratory infections - can be lethal. And working out with one can be dangerous. You're smart to take it easy. Feel better soon.

  10. My friend who we called "Dr Mary" says the germs are always there and that we only get sick when our bodies need a rest. Sounds like you need a rest after the weeks spent with Jon and Sarah. Dianne

  11. Ugh. Your cold sounds miserable. I think your body is telling you to get some serious rest. You've been on the go a lot lately.

  13. Aw, bummer. At least you weren't sick when they were there. Looks like you had plenty of opportunity to catch one. The cold bug was just waiting for you to slow down so it could get you. Take care, let Art spoil you and stay away from your mom. Be well soon.

  16. Oh Kay I hope you are on the mend. Yes that was what you were like and still like. You son is very handsome. Mmm my daughter is off to south America and new York tomorrow. I am very anxious that she is going to Columbia. These kids have got way more guts, let alone more energy, than I have ever had. Stay well.

  18. I went to see the doctor a couple of weeks ago to complain about the cold I'd had for entirely too long. He said some people have had it for three months. I think that scared mine right out of me, because I was better a few days later.
Hope you are well soon, and I hope your mom doesn't get sick at all.

  19. I hope you feel better soon! I haven't had a real cold since I retired from teaching! Getting away from those germy little kids made a huge difference. I am having allergy issues though, from conifer tree pollen, a condition I just only recently acquired. Apparently I'm growing into it. :-(
When we were young we had to keep going even when we were sick. Now you have the option to just stop and take care of yourself. Nice.

  20. You have been on the go for months. Perhaps it has all caught up with you. Lie in bed, rest up. You'll be back, running at full speed, before you know it. It just takes a bit longer for our older bodies to bounce back. Art is right. We aren't as young as we used to be.

  21. Lilly: As a matter of fact Jon and Sarah are in Columbia right now. They said they just left Medellin and are in Cartegena. Of course, when I think Medellin, I think drug cartel. Arrrghhh!!! Scares the heck out of me. I hope Cartegena is safe.

Everybody: Sigh... Mom was feeling a bit under the weather today so we made her stay put and rest. She is the worst for resting if she feels even a little bit better. Her health is so up and down.
