Sarah wasn't feeling 100% better yet, but they'd signed up a couple of weeks ago to learn how to SCUBA dive with Alex's Aquatic Adventures and nothing was going to stop them. They studied the manuals and watched the videos that gave a step by step explanation on how to SCUBA and emphasized the safety precautions.
There were two lessons on Friday and Saturday to certify them as SCUBA divers. They didn't have much leeway because they were leaving the following Tuesday.
Alex, they joked, is a grumpy Brit. He doesn't appear to like Hawaii much because of the high cost of living here. However, they would recommend him to anyone wanting to learn how to SCUBA dive. They said he is extremely qualified and is very careful of your safety. He's also quite reasonable!
Apparently they descended on a rope and learned how to clear their masks of water.
They learned how to breathe and not panic.
These photos were taken by Alex and posted for Jon and Sarah to see. They said they were really excited to see so many fish in the waters about 50 feet deep.
Alex didn't take a lot of fish photos. He also didn't want Sarah or Jon to take photos. They needed to concentrate on learning to SCUBA safely.
Jon and Sarah passed their written and underwater tests and are now certified divers.
They wanted Art and me to join them in this adventure, but we declined. I guess that's why we ended up in the hamster ball. Although the hamster ball adventure wasn't my cup of tea, I prefer being above water than below!

Great pictures. Something to remember!
ReplyDeleteIt looks much roomier and more graceful than the hamster ball thing.
I get claustrophobic when underwater like that. I tried scuba years ago and realized that both under the water and under rock (like spelunking) trigger that feeling in me. Congratulations to both Jon and Sarah for getting certified! :-)
ReplyDeleteWonderful. I love their sense of adventure. They seem to enjoy each other's company and that will serve them well.
ReplyDeleteyou certainly live in the perfect place for scuba diving, what an exciting life your family lead!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! What a wonderful couple enjoying life and new experiences!
ReplyDeleteIt is wonderful to see Jon and Sarah enjoying life and reaching out to all that it can offer! We could all learn a lesson from them!! Enjoy the remainder of their visit, Kay, as I know you and Art both will do!

I think you learn things like that when you are young.
ReplyDeleteI tried snorkeling once, but found it very difficult to swim and breathe with my mouth (which I never do) at the same time.
It does look pretty cool though.
I don't blame you, snorkeling doesn't sound fun except for seeing the fish under water...
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Jon and Sarah for getting certified! Since I love to snorkel, I would not be afraid to try scuba diving.
ReplyDeleteGood for them!
ReplyDeleteI like snorkeling, but have never tried diving, because I'm claustrophobic. The idea of all that water above me is unnerving.

Congrats to Sarah and Jon on getting their certification. I admire those who have such a sense of adventure. Truly, these two are meant for each other.
ReplyDeleteSurprised that, as adventurous as he is and coming from Hawaii, Jon hadn't gone Scuba diving yet. I tried it, sort of liked it, but it is very equipment intensive and you have to have a buddy. I really wasn't a "natural." You can't just Scuba on the spur of the moment. Eventually, I decided snorkling was the way to go for me. Stay on top of the water, swim along in a liesurely fashion, dive for a minute or so (or less in my case)and enjoy the beautiful fish and reefs.
ReplyDeleteHank Chapin: Actually, Hank... Jon is not really from Hawaii. He was born and raised in Illinois. He's really a Midwesterner like his sister. :-)
ReplyDeleteI was born and raised in Hawaii and can't swim. Sigh... yes, sad but true.
Time out

Jon and Sarah are obviously very adventurous! Wow.
ReplyDeleteThat was a really quick certification. It took a week of lessons before I got my ticket. I just hope they will always dive with competent divers. It is a wonderful sport and it is so neat that they do so much together. They seem perfectly matched.
ReplyDeleteThey are an active couple, but you and Art are too..I wouldn't get past panic...
ReplyDeleteGood for them! And good for you for passing on this one. Some new skills are best left to the young.
ReplyDeleteI don't even swim, so I wouldn't be doing that.
Now I want to learn Scuba .I so need a break from routine .
ReplyDeleteWonderful pictures. What brave souls they are. I can see why they want to scube. The life below is beautiful. I'm not a swimmer so I give my camera to those that are and see what live beneath that way. I'd keep you compnay on shore!
