That "E" Word

What helps to prevent dementia?
What keeps diabetes at bay?
What is supposed to chase away the blues?
What keeps your sex life healthy?
What keeps your weight down?
What makes your bones strong?
What might help prevent some cancers?
What cures insomnia?
What builds your immune system?

Sigh...

I know. I know.  Exercise.

So why don't I love it?  Art feels he's got to get out regularly to run or jog or walk. He does this without music and mostly alone.  He says it helps him concentrate.

I do far better with exercise if there are friends around.  I guess that's why I like Zumba and Tai chi.  Friends distract me from feeling like I'm exercising.  Music also helps.  I'm moving while I write this post standing up.

Hey!  Wait a minute.  Maybe the answer to all those above questions was actually dark chocolate!  No?  Ah well... I can dream.

  1. I know when I exercise I feel so much better. I enjoy walking but get bored easily. I need a variety of scenery - and good weather of course - to feel motivated. I also have my treadmill. Now to get motivated, which your post has done for me. Thanks Kay!

  2. It is fun to have friends around for motivation. It used to be harder to get motivated, but as I get older, I feel worse if I don't exercise. I find music helps and the faster, the better. I like the really fast music of the Beach Boys because it reminds me of my years in college. It is hard not to get moving when the music is so active. I feel really good after my exercise so it is worth the time and effort.

  3. I'm enjoying taking walks with Ruby and look forward to getting out more now that she's getting older, but I found most other forms of exercise deadly boring. We bought a Wii which is fun, but I don't use it half enough.

  4. The reason I go to the YMCA classes is because if I didn't have my friends to work out with, I wouldn't do it, either. Zumba and Tai Chi are the same: you are doing it with others. And of course my Thursday hikes, I wouldn't do them at all without my friends! And then the day is over, I feel great, and none of my exercise was done alone.

  8. I have never gotten to where I love or look forward to exercise but I prefer to do it with a friend. It seems like lately it is mostly in the basement with the treadmill and TV.
I do like walks with the dog also.

  11. Exercise is like ironing. I dread doing it, but always enjoy it while I am exercising, and I feel better afterwards.

  12. Yeah, we all know exceptions to the exercise rule:

Lance Armstrong (the bicylist) developed testicular cancer, and football players have died of heart attacks on the field.

Then there are the sports-related injuries -- tendonitis of the knees and elbows that end professional careers.

Exercise only if you enjoy it. Why do something you hate? There are lots of people who don't exercise who live to 90. Lol.

  13. I always remember George Burns who never exercised and smoked cigars and lived to age 99 I think.

It's in the genes, and lookin at your Mom, I'd say you got good genes.

  14. Dianne: Yes, genes have a lot to do with it I'm sure. However, just because you have good genes doesn't mean you're going to live long.

We had very good friends in Illinois who are just such a case. The mother lived into her 90's and was in reasonable shape. Her daughter, Art's age was expected to live as long. She always told me she needed to exercise more as she steadily put on more weight. Without warning, she passed away five years ago from heart and pneumonia complications. If you have good genes, you MIGHT live longer but what quality of life will you have?

Art says he exercises because he does NOT have good genes and wants to keep a good quality of life. He wants me to exercise so I don't need Long Term Care. Sigh...

And mom? Your words made me chuckle. She is always moving! Constantly. When she's not moving she's reading or watching her educational videos.

She starts out the day on her treadmill for a half hour. Then she's busy almost all day working on her garden outside or doing laundry and then cleaning the house. She takes a little nap and then she starts preparing dinner. Then she mops. She says if she doesn't keep moving, her body will start breaking down. Hmmm... I've written so much here, I may as well make this into a post. :-)

  15. I am finally getting back to it..I can't walk outside when it's cold because I can't breathe..so I am hoping as it warms up, that I can get out....

  18. Exercising is great not only for physical well being but also helps us in keeping a positive mind frame .I feel good and happy when I am exercising and feel lethargic and moody when not.

  20. I thought it was E as in eating. Seriously though any discussion of exercise is beneficial if it inspires others to do so in their own ways.
