Snob?

Republican presidential candidate, Rick Santorum has been calling President Obama a snob for wishing all young Americans to have an opportunity to go to college.

Rick Santorum (Photo from Huffington Post)
Santorum said,
“Oh, I understand why he wants you to go to college. He wants to remake you in his image. I want to create jobs so people can remake their children into their image, not his,”
Seriously?  Seriously?  I'm absolutely flabbergasted.  My father dug ditches for the sugar plantation.  My mother was barely able to finish high school because of the war.  Not for one moment did they want me NOT to go to college.  They did all they could to insure that both my brother and I went to college.  Art's parents worked 12+ hour days at their restaurant to make sure their children went to college also.

The thing is, maybe Art would want to run a restaurant like his parents.  (Oops!  He said, "NO way!")  Maybe I'd want to work in the fields digging ditches or be a newspaper typesetter like my mother.  For one thing, newspapers no longer need typesetters.

Our parents never wanted to make us over in their own image, they wanted us to have a choice to do whatever we wanted to do.  Higher education is a means to getting more choices.  Unfortunately, a college education these days is astronomical!  My daughter and her husband don't want more kids because they don't think they can afford to send more than our precious KC to college.

I won't even go into how the U.S. has been falling behind educationally.  And with that failure comes our falling behind in our economic and technological advances but that's all I want to say about that.

A snob?  Really?  Oh there's all kinds of other reasons why Santorum has been annoying me lately.  Mitt Romney has annoyed me too, but I can't seem to just ignore Santorum.

Also in the Huffington Post:
"The GOP candidate was responding to comments he made last October. He had said that he "almost threw up" after reading JFK's 1960 speech in which he declared his commitment to the separation of church and state."
OK... I have to stop here before I throw up!

  1. From this side of the pond the candidates look a rather unimpressive lot but Santorum seems positively dangerous. There's still some time to go . . .

  2. Settle down Kay. Yes Santorum is an abdolute idiot but I do agree that all kids do not have to go to college. All kids are not cut out for college. We need to encourage our kids to look at trade and technical schools because already college educated young people are battling for limited job opportunities. Technical schools are fantastic and turn out plumbers, electricians, chefs, graphic artists, etc. All very high paying jobs. There are other professions available for non-college graduates other than ditch digging.

  3. My sister has decided to stop watching the news because it's upsetting her so much. I don't think Rick Santorum has a chance of ever putting his non-ideas into practice, Kay, but I understand your disgust. I share it.

Oh, and thanks for letting me know what that kanji means. It's impressive that it can mean anything when I look at those squiggles. I can now look at it on the wall and not wonder any longer. Thank you!

  4. I can't understand Santorum's appeal. He seems so old fashioned. If he becomes the GOP nominee, there definitely will be a clear choice. Obama all the way!

  5. wow, rather prehistoric attitude he has.
You're hot under the collar today Kay!

  6. I'm trying to stay away from political stories as much as possible. I found myself getting more and more upset, but nothing I can do about the eventual Republican candidate. Soon enough they'll pick one, and then I'll start paying attention again. (Or not. I'll be able to read about their platforms all by myself, without a "talking head" to help me.)

  7. ah politics, I try to stay far away but sometimes it's impossible and the remarks and cuts are too dumb!

  8. Granny Annie: Yes, you're right. However, Obama has gone on to say he didn't mean all kids had to go to a 4 year college. It could be a Community College where a trade could be learned. This includes the technical schools. The thing is to be able to choose where you want to go.

  9. Okay Kay, YOU should run for president, or at least governor after the current gov's time.

I dislike all of the GOP guys, but it's not a choice I'm worried about because I'm all for Obama.

Some of the GOP candidates appeal to the masses who don't read what's really happening, and jump on the accusatory bandwagon. I have coworker nurses (with scientific minds,) who follow some politicians without thinking at all.

    Critical thinking skills are needed!

Hang in there; Obama will win again to finish up lots of the work he started and is trying to pass. We need to spend more time voting in more Democrats in the Congress!

  10. I do so agree with you! Santorum is one of the most disgusting men/politicians I've seen in my lifetime!! I spend so much time turning off the sound during the news at night -- I'd probably be better off to just leave the TV off!! And if he has that big of a following then this country is over-populated with jerks! Sorry, I do get carried away and I'm glad I haven't had breakfast yet or I'd be throwing it up!!! Hooray for you, Kay!!!

  11. Hi, I contacted you few weeks ago, I was going to send you something, remember having to do with Amanda's giveaway. I finally am getting it off to you with a trip to the post office today.
I saw your post and wanted to comment. I couldn't agree more. What parent doesn't want the most or best for their kids. Or even society as a whole, for all kids to have the affordable chance for a good higher education. I'd love to know about his kids, if they send them to college or not. It's just sad that the political rhetoric has sunk so low. My parents were so proud that my sister and I went to college I can't imagine calling them snobs.

  12. Kay: I think this is an excellent post. You have such a gift for showing what education has meant to you and your family. Sure, people can get by without college educations, but life is a lot harder for them. Your parents wanted you to have a better life than they did and saw that education was the way for you to have that. Terry's parents and my parents were all college educated, and we kind of took college for granted (even though I got my degree later in life). A good college education is one of the most worthwhile things in life to have.

  13. Bravo, Kay, Drum Major's right, you SHOULD run for office. The only problem is, you are too nice and you wouldn't last a minute in office, guppy swimming with sharks and all. Trust is a finicky thing and is built by years of familiarity and faith in another's motivations; yet in today's world billions are spent building trust though TV ads, online blogs, ad slogans, short films and product familiarity. We are asked to TRUST someeone to lead our city, country, or state based on little snippets into their dialogue or lives or past office conduct. Sometimes even less than that, like what kind of dog they have or whether or not they inhaled or not, or if they can toot a sax. Not a trust-worthy venue, by any means. So, given the flawed process we use to elect leaders, is it so surprising that we get less than stellar results?

Oh, thanks for the package, again. GREAT STUFF!

  14. Lynn: You are too wonderful. Thank you so much for your kindness. Amanda does have the nicest blogger friends. I really appreciate your comment. I hope you'll come back again soon and often. :-)

Walt: You're very welcome for the lemons. I'm so glad your family likes them.

And yes, you're so right about those sound bites that people make all their judgements with.

  15. This guy sounds like a jerk, he makes Obama look so good.

  16. Don't go into politics, my friend, it would kill you.
I didn't know your mother set type for a living. So did I. Made good money, too.
Dick sells Registered Education Savings Plans to parents and grandparents so children can have the post-secondary education of their choice. Many go to university, some to community colleges, some to trade schools, technical schools, even beauty schools. I recently met a man whose 12-year-old wants to be a landscape architect.
I think what President Obama means is high school graduates should have the choice of college or university, and should not have that choice denied to them. It's not a matter of re-making in anyone's image, it's a matter of giving them chances.
People who are dirt-poor and living in their cars don't have choices, or chances.

  17. Don't hold back darlin'...let us know how ya really feel! Heeehehehehe!!!

I agree, not all are college bound, but ya know different strokes for different folks.

I'd love a candidate I could truly back 100%...I'm not seein' that for me right now. 'Nuff said.

God bless ya sweetie and have a magnificent day!!! :o)

  18. Rick might have fit right in with the Mayflower group. He really wants to set us back centuries.
The good thing is that he will drive more people towards Obama than away from.

  19. Even ditch diggers could use enough education to keep themselves safe. There are safety issues that some employers slide by on, ignore the stop work order from the inspectors because of code violation and have their employees continue to dig. They think nothing is going to happen until someone gets buried alive as happened recently near this area.

  20. I don't think it makes any difference who the republican candidate is. Obama has it hands down. All 3 would put us in war, not saying that Obama won't after the election but Santorum and Mitt sound so immature and who could ever trust Newt. I feel the Republican party is losing it's steam. Lincoln was the first Republican president and Bush Jr. may have been the last. Put me in a long gray beard and send me to a mountain top. :)

  21. Quite frankly, I am shocked when I hear Santorum speak or when I read some of his comments. I don't even understand how anyone could take him seriously. The sad, and scary thing is, many are voting for him.

    ReplyDelete
  22. enjoy it while you can. If Santorum is such a slob it's good for Obama. It'll inspire dems to actually show up at the polls. The forecast is for a low democrat turnout next presidential election. Everybody staying home assumes Obama will win, but after the Repubs show up enmass it might be a different story.

Santorum overlooks how the G.I. bill improved the nation as a whole. Personally, I don't feel college education is an entitlement like K-12, but this is directed at the people who keep popping out kids and the taxpayers have to support other people kids on top of their own. If you can't afford shoes for your 5 kids when other parents thought it wise to have only a single kid, than your kids go without shoes. If you can't afford college, your kids don't go to college.

  23. I don't like either candidate!!!

I am finding that it is important to have choices. Many are not suited to University, with huge debts at the end. Many would be better going to College.
We are desperate for trades people here, too.
My dear friend told me to find an education that would lead to a job.
It's a difficult time in one's life. I admire the kids who take a year and make a choice later!

  24. Can you imagine the "base" that those guys are trying to appeal to? They get to vote!!! Uff duh.
I don't think everyone is right for college, either, but I want everyone to have the opportunity to make that choice for themselves. There should be something after highschool for everyone before plunging into the work force until you are 70 years old.
