I thought our dinner tonight looked so pretty that I should take a photo of it. It really was absolutely scrumptious. We invited my brother and his family to join us at the last minute, but they couldn't come because...... are you ready? Arrrghhhh! He's walking five miles home from work again to train for the Aloha Run. I've still barely managed 2 miles. Arrrghhh!
Anyway, back to our dinner:
Mom kept laughing, "You're blogging our dinner?"
Yup. Here's what we ate. The Manoa lettuce salad was grown organically by Auntie Grace. She also made her super duper sushi for us. (Mom is saving you some, Dennis.) Mom made the miso soup full of seaweed and fresh tofu from Honda Tofu that we bought from the factory. She also fried the saba (mackerel) which stunk up the house. Thank goodness we live in Hawaii so we could open the windows to air it out. I steamed the fresh asparagus. We topped it off with a little White Zinfandel.
We were so full I could hardly finish my Fuji apple slices we had for dessert.

You told us how it smelled, so how did the "saba" taste? We had left over, homemade potato soup (my husband's recipe). Always a delicious dinner.
ReplyDeleteYum, it looks lovely. We cheated a bit last night, as we'd been decorating all day. I slow cooked some chicken with a jar of tikka masala sauce and then cooked some rice and steamed some cauliflower to go with it. Tonight I'll do better and probably make a quiche with jacket potato and salad.

ReplyDeleteLooks wonderful! The more colorful the better, Kay. Makes me wonder what you have in store for us when we see you. Lol. My main entree was crab cakes, but we had 3 appetizers to eat before then -- all at Kincaid's. It all tasted great, because, guess what, I didn't have to do the cooking!!!
ReplyDeleteI had steamed broccoli and asparagus on a bed of beans, covered with salsa and a bit of tofu. I topped it all off with some feta cheese and popped it into the microwave. Delicious but nowhere near as pretty as yours... presentation is important but I rarely worry about it.

ReplyDeleteDianne: The center of the sushi was stuffed with carrots, tuna, kanpyo, cucumber, etc. I can't remember everything.

Ron: Yes, it's wine all right. My mother does like her wine. We alternate wine, carbonated water and green tea.
I hardly cook. At sundown, we went out for some pizza and beer. And watch the boats at the harbor.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very nice dinner. We love Saba too and order 3 choices of Saba ($7.50) at Palama Mkt whenever we're in the neighborhood. Can't beat that price, and they give enough for both of us to share a plate lunch.
So much preparation to make your meal. We just slouches.

ReplyDeleteLast night was Sunday evening, so it was easy cooking night. We made our own ham and mushroom omelets, and I made a fresh fruit compote of apple, banana, orange, and grapes in orange juice. I warmed some cardamom rolls that I had made and put in the freezer.

I hope you had rice with that. It's a very small meal. I've never tried cooking mackerel. It does look delicious.
ReplyDeleteToday we are having fresh asparagus grown right here on the Big Island with local grown lamb chops, local grown peppers, and brown rich.
Brown rich. Ha ha. Well you know what I mean.

ReplyDeleteWe had some lovely trout and veggies. Spinach, sauteed with onions, garlic, cranberries, and some spices. I laid it out on top of some grilled sweet red peppers. Not so bad!!! I should write it down somewhere, as it was yummy.

ReplyDeleteL. from W: Actually we didn't have to do much for the sushi since my aunt and cousin brought it over for us. With both mom and I working, it was done in a jiffy.
ReplyDeleteHattie: I didn't have any brown rice (we do eat brown rice) because I already had sushi which is enough carbs for me. Art and mom had a little brown rice, but not much because the sushi was so amazing that we ate more than we should.
By the way, don't forget to wash your local grown produce really well. I just saw on the front page of the Star Advertiser about that rat lungworm disease someone contracted on the Big Island. Spooky...
