Three Reasons to Come to Hawaii

We just spent some quality time with our daughter and granddaughter on Skype.  I asked Tif when they might head out to Hawaii again. She said 4 year old KC has been working on her dad.  Tif said our son-in-law, Ed asked his daughter to give him reasons why she needed to go to Hawaii and she couldn't count grandpa and grandma because we could go there instead.

KC's top three reasons were:
1.  She wanted to visit her toy closet here in Hawaii.
2.  The warm weather
3.  Rainbows

I told her to give the three reasons that might actually entice her father.  Andagi, shave ice and snorkeling at Hanauma Bay.  Andagi are round Okinawan doughnuts that my son-in-law is partial to.

Ed really dislikes the travel time it takes to get from Chicago to Hawaii.  Since Chicago is blanketed by heavy snow right now, perhaps the warm weather reason might work best.

I told Art if they're not coming, we need to start planning for our trip back to Chicago.

We're still waiting for our son, Jon to tell us when they're coming.

Sigh...

  1. Ah yes, we with scattered children live in hope and calendar in hand.

Nice idea to get KC to articulate the reasons.

  2. It must be so hard sometimes having your children so far away. We felt bad enough when we moved here to Somerset, leaving our sons a three hour's drive away. Mind you, it's not any easier trying to arrange a visit!

    Mukavaa viikkoa.

  4. I could make a long list of reasons to visit Hawaii. Someday I will have to head in that direction. It is very hard for parents and children to live so far apart. I moved away from where my parents lived for my job, but if my kids moved away, I would move too. I want to live within driving distance of the kids. The place where I live isn't as important to me as living near my kids.

  5. I love KC's "visit my toy closet" idea!

  6. Chicago being covered with snow sounds like a very good reason. I hope she is successful in convincing him that it is time for a visit.

  7. We have snow and cold right now, and that beach sure does look enticing! Since we live on the west coast, the air travel time isn't as long, but it's still expensive to travel these days. My heart isn't in it; I would be thinking of all the other ways I could be spending that money... :-)

  8. A better questions might be Three reasons to stay in Chicago. I would answer None, None and None. Looks like any opportunity for a Chicagoan to go to Hawaii would be a no brainer.

  11. It won't be long before KC will be in school and they will be limited to vacation travel. Tell her to keep working on her daddy.

  13. When we visited Hawaii last year, we flew from Ottawa to Chicago, Chicago to Honolulu and it is a long cramped flight...but it is so worth it!!! Tell Ed to just do it!!! (and Jon too!)

How could they not visit Hawaii in January/Feb????? so silly

  14. Kay -- I drudge the long flights too. It's no longer a reason NOT to get to Hawaii, but a definite reason to STAY longer, like I did. 3 weeks had me so mellow and relaxed. But I think I may still want first class to return the next time. Yes, school days will limit them. We scrunched to spend 2 weeks and 3 weekends between high school semesters for my son's first visit. DrumMajor

  21. Drum Major: When we go to Chicago, we stay for at least a month. We don't care for those long flights either. We already know what an amazing traveler you are. You'd definitely fit in with the sort of schedules Art makes on trips.

  23. We'll be in Seattle a lot, since one daughter is pregnant and expecting in April.
In March our other daughter and granddaughters are coming out for R & R. What they like best is going to Kona and hanging out at a resort hotel. So who are we to argue with them about that?

  24. Lets see,Chicago snow--Hawaii sunshine and beaches. Seems like a no brainer. Hope they make the trip soon.

  26. Oh my I don't know how you stand it. I don't have a grandchild yet just a daughter living halfway across the country and I can hardly stand that sometimes.
