Mosquito Bite Relief

I have no idea how it happened, but I got a mosquito bite on my tummy.  It became a LARGE itchy bump that started to drive me crazy.  I KNOW I shouldn't scratch it, but I couldn't help myself.  Soon, it was oozing.  I'd put an anti-itch lotion on it, but it didn't help for very long.

I have a feeling I'm allergic to insect bites just like my mom and daughter.  I just haven't been tested with bee bites like my mom.

I found that my blouse brushing against the bite lump was irritating it and making it even more sensitive.

It occurred to me that I should put some Cortizone-10 ointment on a band-aid and stick it over the lump.  What a difference that made!

Now the lump is much tinier and going away. Usually, these bites will last over a week or even two.  This one is almost gone in a couple of days.

I looked up mosquito bite remedies and found a whole host of them on About.com from toothpaste, vinegar, Preparation H, calamine, aloe vera, etc.

I'm sure they must all work, but for me... I just bought a new box of band-aids, just in case.

  1. Kay,
My husband has problems with mosquito bites like that. It amazes me how very scary looking they can become. He now knows to start treating the bite early, before it gets worse.

Hope you are doing well these days!

  4. When I first get mosquito bites in the summer, they itch like crazy, and then I must get used to them because then they don't bother me at all after that. So sorry to hear that you are so bothered by them.

  5. My daughter lives in Pearl City and she complains that BIRD MITES have been biting her kids. It got so bad that she has moved their beds to the center of the room away from the windows.

  6. I've found that if I can dab ammonia on the bite quickly the itch goes away.

  7. I know what you are going through. Me too. I run into the house at the first sign of a mosquito, That means camping has been pretty much out of my life. Another old-fashioned remedy that works for me is a bar of the old Fels Naptha soap. It's difficult to find it these days but I know you can send for it in the Vermont Country Store catalog. I keep a small stash of it for any kind of skin irritation. It works like a miracle for me.

  9. Thanks Kay, I'll have to try that. I hate it when a big bite oozes on my jeans.
Do you have a big red circle around the bite? I got a few of those this winter. Do spiders do that?
I always try to put vinegar on cotton on the bite right away.
Also I take a few weeks of homeopathic Apis every spring to reduce the reactions I have to bites in the summer. Basically it is ground up bees. The old adage of fight fire with fire.
    Good luck with your itching.

    Shalom from Dina

  10. I've got that mosquito bite allergy too. Big welts and itchiness are a part of my summer. I use Bendadryl cream to make it better. I've heard that Absorbine Jr. is a good repellent. I'm going to give it a try this mosquito season.

  12. Aya: Thank you very much. I'll look for it when I go to Shirokiya, Marukai or Don Quijote. We'll also be in Japan soon so I can look for it then.

  13. I had the problem that Gigi's grandchildren are having with bird lice. We had the roosting areas plugged up and the gutters cleaned. We then had to wash everything. I even washed the landscaping plants and the outside of the house with Planet Hand dishwashing liquid Diluted and dispense thru a sprayer attached to the water hose.

  14. I'm still dealing with some kind of insect bite I got in Rome in mid-September. It's finally, finally almost healed. What an aggravation. I should've tried the toothpaste remedy!

  15. It is utterly amazing the amount of irritation a small mosquito bite can cause. Congrats on your successful remedy.

  16. there's some stuff called Afterbite that really and truly works!

  17. Nan: I have Afterbite. It smells like ammonia, doesn't it? I think it's most effective if you use it soon after you're bitten. It does work though.

  18. Yes, ammonia does work, but if it is a histamine reaction, you might try an antihistamine. I'm so sorry about this.

  19. I get big and lasting reactions to mosquito bites too. I'll have to remember that trick.

  20. Whew! Avoid insects, Kay! Please just treat such topically. I've had too many patients who "picked at", "poked", "squeezed" bites and irritations that turned into losing part of their skin or body from rampant infections. Don't play with it! If an area gets/stays red much more than 3/4 inch to one inch, go to the doc! DrumMajor

  21. Poor baby, that is not much fun. I vaguely remember mosquitoes from my Florida days but where I am in the Ozarks, I haven't had a bite since I moved here 8 years ago. Aahhh.

  22. We have something called AfterBite that works quite well. My mother always had an aloe-vera plant near the door of her house in Mexico, and she used it on everyone but Dad, who was very allergic and had to have an Epi-Pen.
Good for you, doing something to make it feel better quickly.

  26. L: Welcome back! I've been missing you! It never occurred to me that it could be bird lice. I've read that it's supposed to be even more itchy than mosquitoes. We do have that neighbor that keeps feeling those pigeons. I sure hope we don't get an infestation. Yuuuuck!

  27. Hi Kay!
I hope kinkan works for you.

by the way sometimes I'm wondering what I should do about the radioactive materials.
there are people who are worried and not worried.
for instance a mother next door isn't worried at all. so she hang dry her family's futon always anytime.
    I think it's OK if she's OK.
    what should I do?
    I sometimes think about it.
