In 1981, my college roommate, Gail's parents came to visit us in Chicago. We loved seeing them again. Mrs. T was a barber and she cut all of our hair. Then she gave me some lessons on how to do it myself before they left.
Isn't it wonderful how so many things you learn can impact your whole life in so many ways?
For the last 30 years I've often cut my own hair as well as Art's. There was a point (probably Middle School) at which the kids wouldn't let me touch their hair anymore.
Now in Hawaii, I cut all of our hair. This is why mom, Art and I always have the same hair style. It's true. I actually do only one style.
Just think of all the money we save every month by cutting our own hair.
Then multiply that by 30 years although I confess there were often times I went to the beauty shop to have it done while I was working.
If Mrs. T had not come to visit us and show me how to be confident enough to do this, I wouldn't have attempted to do it myself.
We can all be teachers. We can all make a difference in big and small ways. Isn't it wonderful?

You remind me of my mother, who cut all of us kids' hair as well as her own!!! In fact, she did such a good job, our neighbors in Manoa sent their daughters to her for a haircut, too. For free, I might add.
ReplyDeleteKay - I love how your Hawaiian haircuts are outside! DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI have always cut mine as well, so did my mum before me, I haven't come across many who do, its good to know, looks like we cut it the same too!Good for you, this is wonderful,
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea. I cut my hair and my husband's hair also. I used to cut my son's hair too. Even though I also have my hair colored at a hairdresser, I usually cut it several times between trips. Most of the people I know have always cut their husband's hair. It started when we were all young and on budgets, and has continued because it works for us. Hairdressers are amazed that I cut my hair but when I am ready to trim over my eyes, I don't want to wait until my next appointment--I'm fearless with a pair of scissors too. Good topic I can really relate.
ReplyDeleteI'm always amazed with people who cut their own hair..how do you make sure it's even in the back?!?
ReplyDeleteI cut my husband's hair, because he could never get what he wanted in a barber shop. I use clippers with a guard so I can never mess it up. It's quick and fun, but he doesn't get to mess with mine. I have a really good hairdresser and she's pretty reasonable, too.
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure that if I tried to cut my own hair that I would make such a mess of it that it would cost me way more to get it fixed than I saved.
ReplyDeleteI think it is great that you can do that.
Mom cut our hair and then I cut my own hair and cut my daughter's hair. I haave shulder issues and can't do it anymore, or I would. My hair style is about like your Mom's and I pay much more for it once a month. Bah.

I can relate, my first husband taught me how to cut his hair then I cut all my son's hair until their teen years...lol!
ReplyDeleteI hate all beauty shops. I have to force myself to get a hair cut. I'd love to be able to do my own. You have indeed saved a lot of money over the years.
ReplyDeleteI was just trying to figure out how much money I'd have saved. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I'm clumsy and the thought of cutting my own hair never entered my head once I was past the age of three or four. Which reminds me, I need to get my hair cut. I just love having someone else wash my hair. The scalp massage feeling is just great!
However, I've never seen outdoor haircuts until I saw your photos. Wonderful idea!

Interesting that many cut their own hair...including me. My mother in law was a barber and I often sat and watched her cut our children's hair and her son's (my husband). Occasionally she'd cut my hair too. I think that's what gave me the confidence to cut my children's own hair, my husband, and eventually my own (though it is still not easy for me and I am always tempted to go to the beauty shop to have it fixed). When my mother in law retired, she gave her clippers and scissors to me, which I gave to my son, who now has learned to cut his own hair, his wife's and their three sons! He's really happy he knows how to cut hair and always says he cuts their hair with a big, proud smile. In fact recently I did a similar math savings calculation to remind and encourage me to keep on learning how to cut my own hair. In fact lately, I've been more frugal than ever...since Bernanke is keeping interest rates zero forever.
ReplyDeleteOh...I don't know why it is difficult for me to type lately....

Well, you do a terrific job and I think that's great! I did cut my hair at one time, but can't say I was very good at it! Hope your week is going well, Kay! Enjoy!

Yes, it is wonderful sharing knowledge and skills.
ReplyDeleteDidn't you cut my hair once? I wish it could be again.
Your haircuts look good!
ReplyDeleteYes, they look great, but I did like you in that shoulder height bob. :)
ReplyDeleteYour hair always looks so cute, and now we find out why. I also love your mom's hair.
ReplyDeleteI had a neighbor years ago with hair like mine. She cut her own, and she cut mine. Try as I might, I never learned how to cut my hair, nor did I ever learn to cut my children's hair. I certainly could have saved money if I could have cut the hair, or maybe not. Every time I tried to cut my hair or theirs, I ended up having to have a stylist fix my mess.
Just doing a little snipping on my own hair seems risky and hard to do. Maybe that's because no one taught me.
ReplyDeleteWell written, Kay!
ReplyDeleteThink of all that money you saved - boggles the mind.
Glad to see Mom looks GREAT smiling-

ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up about your post about my Mom! Glad you put her knowledge to good use for 30 years!
ReplyDeleteSorry for the double post, I thought it didn't go through the first time... :)
ReplyDeleteBen T: No problem, I can easily remove any doubles I get. :-) Your mom and dad are so wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYes..I would save a lot of money, but I don't think I could do it as well as you do..you'd never know you didn't have it done at a beauty salon..
ReplyDeleteThat's great!
ReplyDeleteDH cuts his own hair, along with our boys' hair. Sure does save a lot of money!
