We had a tai-chi holiday party on Thursday at the Ginger House in Mililani. Art and I don't know a whole lot of Chinese restaurants in Hawaii yet and it was great to sample this place. The green salad was fantastic (I actually ate two servings) and I've never had honey walnut shrimp before. It looked more like pastries.
Our tai-chi instructor teaches several classes a week. We were just his Tuesday/Thursday class, but there were about 60 people and not everyone had been able to make it.
He really is an amazing man.
We all chipped in to present him with this yin and yang sculpture to thank him for his kindness, generosity and dedication in passing on what he has learned to us.
These are his assistant teachers, the beautiful people who have also dedicated their time and effort to teaching us the movements and art of tai-chi. I'm still in awe of how they're all happy to work so hard for us without any monetary compensation.
After the luncheon, two women stopped and asked me if I'd graduated from Waipahu High School. I told them I did, but they said it must have been a different year.
When we compared notes, we realized we were all classmates who graduated together!
I've been in tai-chi class with Arlene for nearly a year and didn't realize she was a classmate. Good grief! I wish I'd thought to have Art take this photo before Virginia left us.
There is a joke that the first thing anyone does in Hawaii when they meet someone is to ask two questions, "What school you grad from?" and "What year?"
Now I know why.

It's a compliment that you are still recognizable since high school! David is always recognized on the street, but I never am (even at class reunions)! I have changed a lot, but David still has the same face and height (though older).
ReplyDeleteHello Kay,
ReplyDeleteGreetings.
Your header photo is spectacular.
Your other photos are excellent too but somehow they could not be enlarged to get a closer look.
It is interesting to read this post on tai chi and those dedicated instructors.
You must have been really surprised to know ultimately that Ariene was your class mate and both did not know about it nearly a year.Surprises never cease in this wonderful world.
Wish you all the best,
Joseph
What a nice surprise that was! And you are so fortunate to have these people teach you without any cost. It's amazing to me, but I am often surprised at the generosity of others. It's catching, too... :-)
ReplyDeleteEverything looks delicious and it seems that it was a very festive enjoyable evening, the sculpture is beautiful. Funny story about your classmate.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful gift, I love that sculpture! So great that you had a good celebration and interesting discovery!
ReplyDeleteIt is great that your teachers are willing to share their knowledge so generously.
ReplyDeleteHow fun that you got to reconnect with people from your high school days.
Here in St. Louis it's a standing joke that soon after you meet someone they'll ask where you went to high school. I didn't know it happened other places, too!
ReplyDeleteRunning into a classmate like that is so amazing!
ReplyDeleteBeen thinking about you for the past few days -- since your last post. How are things going? When do you go back?
It was nice the three of you got to meet again. And the picture of the two of you looks good. I also liked the other photos on the post.
ReplyDeleteYou have mentioned the electric wires overhead causing problems after looking at my office.
A long time ago the electric wire that comes from the line, outside, to the electric box indoors passed close, overhead, and if I placed a computer up against the closest wall to the wires, I had computer problems. It doesn't seem to bother modern computers at all.
What fun, Kay! I'd read about the "where'd you go to high school" question stemming from the public, then private schools established in missionary times, then the Queen establishing the school for those of Hawaiian descent. The Queen's schools certainly provided a different approach to learning and being proud of their heritage. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteI am so impressed that you do Tai Chi. I would love to learn. It is so beautiful to watch. The gracefulness of the movement is hypnotizing.
ReplyDeletelooks like a fun party and reunion with classmates...
ReplyDeleteGreat party and I do love Tai Chi!! The food looks delicious! How fun to run into old classmates! Hope you have a lovely weekend, Kay!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
How wonderful that you do Tai Chi and have such a cool group of T friends!

I'm so bad. I almost missed the part about catching up with the old class mate, because I was salivating over the honey walnut shrimp. Wahhhhh I want some. Dianne
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to have a lunch like that. I do so miss my Tai Chi/Chi Gong classes. They help keep you young. Lovely too to meet a classmate. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat fun to meet an old classmate, and also to go out to dinner where the shrimp look like pastries!
ReplyDeleteHi to Art and all the best to your mom.
K
Thanks for showing Art's photo of the lunar eclipse! I was up at 4:30 this morning, but forgot to look at the eclipse. Darn!
ReplyDeleteGigi: Art considered waking me up, but then thought better of it. He knows I might be grouchy. I'm not a morning person.
ReplyDeleteThat is so neat that you discovered you were classmates. I think it is so neat that you are learning tai-chi.
ReplyDeleteJoseph: I'm sorry you weren't able to click on the photo to enlarge them. They don't get super big because I've reduced the size of the photos to make it easier to open my blog. However, they should have gotten somewhat bigger by clicking on them.
ReplyDeleteKathy A: Thank you so much for caring, Kathy. My next appointment is on January 4th. They wanted me a little earlier, but parking is so horrible at Tripler Army Hospital if you go after lunch. January 4th was the earliest for a morning appointment. I'm trying not to think about it... but I guess it's always there.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this post, what fun! I like the two questions, hope I remember them next time I meet someone.
ReplyDeleteI've been there once when I was little...I need to try that place out again!
