It's My Fault

People have been wishing Art luck on doing the Honolulu Marathon which was held yesterday.

Art did not run, and yes it's my fault.  I told him I didn't want him to do it.  It scares me to see him out there in the hot sun running for 26+ miles.

Didn't the Marathon start in Greece when that fellow ran that far to bring a message and then dropped dead?  I got this from MarathonGuide.com
So I invoke the spirit of the soldier/messenger Phidippides who, according to Greek legend, ran from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens after a heavily outnumbered Greek force defeated invading Persians in a historic battle for democracy. Unfortunately, as the story goes, Phidippides dropped dead after proclaiming, "Nike!" (victory) over the Persians.
Well, I couldn't stand the worry.  I'm sure my brother was happy to get that extra sleep yesterday morning, not having to wake up at 3:30 AM (the Marathon starts at 5 AM) to bring us to Honolulu and follow the marathon route to check on Art.

A compromise was reached.  I agreed that the 1/2 Marathon might be OK so he signed up for that right away.

We went to the Honolulu Marathon Expo at the Convention Center to pick up Art's early sign-up t-shirt and buy some energy gels.

The 1/2 Marathon Hapalua will be on March 11, 2012.

Art is already training for it.  Hopefully Dennis is getting some extra rest until then because that's going to be another early wake-up.

  2. I cannot imagine talking my brother out of doing anything. What does Art tell people when they ask why he didn't run? Does he say my sister wouldn't let me? It amazes me how any of those marathoners survive.

  4. Even a half-marathon is more than I could run!

You should come to Tokyo for the Tokyo Marathon some year!

That's a beautiful photo of the lunar eclipse!
It was around 10PM (JST) when it was visiblein Tokyo.

  5. I wish him luck because it takes a lot of courage to take on a half marathon. I can't imagine trying to do a whole marathon. The header is lovely. There have been many neat moon photo opportunities available lately, but my camera isn't up to the challenge.

  6. I walked a half marathon in 2008 and had a great time, although I was plenty sore after that. There was a full marathon going on at the same time, and a young woman collapsed and died at mile 22. Running a marathon is definitely dangerous, you did the right thing, Kay. A half marathon makes much more sense.

  7. Isn't a 1/2 marathon 13 miles long? That's long! Anyway, my friend Bob ran his last Honolulu Marathon (the full one) last year at age 85. It took him over 8 hours!!! He has framed his shirt and hung it on his office wall. He is 86 now and glad he didn't run this year. Feels wistful, though.

  8. I feel exactly like this when David talks about riding his bike or playing tennis in the hot sun. At 82, I think he should consider taking it easy.

My Aunt Rita rode 75 miles on her 75th birthday. She tried to do it again a year later; fell off her bike; broke her leg and developed a blood clot that when to her head and left her blind. She is now deteriorating in a nursing home. There are worse things than death. Good for you reminding Art to not overdo it. Dianne

  9. WOW 26 miles in the hot sun, I can see your concern Kay. Glad Art is running in the 1/2 Marathon instead. Good luck to him!!

  10. Yeah Kay, the women get "blamed" for keeping their guys alive! I'm sure he was chomping at the bit to run, but maybe deep down inside he's glad you talked him out of it. You've diplomatically become his "excuse." Beautiful task in mustering the compromise. How sweet. Won't it be cooler in March, too, considering it is Hawaii? Look up TRIKKE.com, a carving self-propelled thingie. I got one, but need to take lessons for the uphill part. DrumMajor

  11. The half marathon sounds like a good compromise. Art probably wouldn't have let you talk him out of it if he hadn't had some concerns of his own.

  12. Don't be hard on yourself. It's only because you care so much. I'm sure Art understands. The 1/2 marathon sounds much better.

  13. Granny Annie: Actually, Art is my husband. My brother drives us to the races, but he doesn't even want to do the 8 mile Aloha Run/Walk with me. :-)

Tokyo Five: Puh-leease... I'm not leading Art anywhere near another Marathon. He might be too tempted.

Gigi: Yup! 13 miles... but he's already trained for that much. He runs almost that far on Saturdays and then sleeps for an hour to recoup.

Dianne: I just told Art about your aunt and why he shouldn't overdo.

Drum Major: It's pretty cool right now actually. In fact, it rained yesterday during the Marathon. It starts getting warmer in March. However, it's still better at 13 miles rather than 26.

  14. That's an excellent compromise Kay, I think you are right about doing this.

  15. Still impressive -- half or not! I don't run -- if you ever see me running just assume someone is chasing me.

  16. I don't blame you for asking Art not to run. Marathons are grueling and hard on the body. Sounds like a good compromise was reached.

  20. I don't blame you for worrying. As people get older their body is getting tired out.
