Not Too Hard, Not Too Soft, But Just Right!

Mom has mentioned a few times that her koa sofa and chairs were very old and that the springs that my brother put in were once again sagging.  We knew it was time to get her some new furniture.

We checked out Homeworld and then Ashley Furniture where we met Louann Chatani.  She was wonderful and helped us find a leather sofa and love seat that met our requirements.  She spent a lot of time with us trying to make sure we got the best deal possible and we appreciated that.

Mom sat on a lot of sofas there and decided a brown leather one would be best because then she wouldn't have to worry about keeping the fabric clean.

What we liked best about the one she chose was that the bottom cushions could come off.  If one gets flat, you can move it.  If the back stuffing should get flat, you can open the zipper and put more in.  Mom is very picky about her chairs, beds, etc.  She doesn't want it to be too hard or too soft, especially not too soft.  She sat on this sofa and deemed it just right.

The sofa and loveseat have arrived and mom is quite pleased.  We've told her that this is her birthday, Christmas, New Years, Easter, Mother's Day gift for the next year.

She stood grinning at her new furniture and then said, "I think I'll put some doilies on top so the dust doesn't dirty it."

Arrrrghhhhhh.....

POSTSCRIPT:
I was just talking to Art about getting some nice, big stylish pillows for the sofa for her so she'd leave off putting a whole bunch of lacy things on it.

Too late!

Art went down to take a peek and came up laughing!  "Go down and check out the sofa now."

Ah well... whatever makes her happy...

  1. That was a sweet thing to do and a nice gift too. Lacy doilies and moms - they are synonymous. Can't have one without the other:)

  2. It's great that she's happy...we just ordered our Christmas gift new carpeting for our bedroom. It was worn out after 15+ years but it's not cheap...$1500 installed then it's time for new flooring in our computer room but that will be major project with unplugging and moving all the desks, computers, etc...lol!

  3. I hope her furniture lasts a long time. I love leather!

  4. And think about how you are stimulating the economy! I love her pretty little doilies, they are just so... grandmotherly! :-)

  5. She's certainly made the furniture more colorful!

  6. I guess the doilies are what make them really "just right" for your mom. Maybe they were a little slippery for her without the extra decor.

  7. I have everything covered here too. That's what comes from working hard to have something nice. Your Mom's place looks cozy. Dianne

  8. Those look like pillows to me, not doilies. Should make that leather more comfortable. Of course, I guess your weather is so temperate you don't have to worry about that.

  9. Must be my age for I really like your Mom's additions. Really softens the look.
I like leather also, mainly because I have pets.
    Great gift.

  10. You do have to sit on sofas and chairs to make sure they fit what you like. We sat on a lot before getting the ones we loved.

I think the doilies idea is from our parents' generation--my in-laws use towels too.

  11. Everybody: Actually, she put large crocheted doilies on the tops of the backs of the sofa and loveseat, but they kept falling off so she gave up.

Now she's finding that the cushions make it too high for her so she's taking that off too. I think.

AND she's perturbed that the sofa is so slippery that she keeps slipping off.

    Oh dear......

  14. Your mom is wonderful, Kay. Even though I've never met her, I just love her all to bits. She'll find a way to make that leather furniture work, even if she has to put slipcovers on it!

  15. Okay Kay -- Mom's now discovered the features I quietly don't care for in leather furniture. Some stores have a "return in 30 day" policy. Most fabrics today are pretty tough and stain resistant.
I also find leather too cold in the winter, and too hot and sticky (when wearing shorts,) in the summer, especially in a car's seating.
I actually received my Dad's car when he died, which has leather seats. As soon as my Golden Retriever jumped into the back seat, she slid across like a hockey puck! I had the back seat of perfectly good leather upholstery covered in cloth to prevent the dog from breaking bones!
Don't let Mom slide off into the floor!

  16. My first thought was that I might not want leather in your climate. What with wearing shorts all of the time, I'd be sticking to the leather.
Looks like your mom is working through what she needs for her comfort. Cute and funny.

  17. LOL! This is so funny, because it´s exactly what my in law´s do too. Expect their couch has a pattern and the cloth she puts on top has a different pattern. Can you imagine how LOUD it looks!!!??

  18. All of my furniture are made of 100% leather -- not acrylic or leather-match.

Not sticky and not slippery. No need to vacuum, just use a swiffer-duster. Easy to clean. Best of all, NO DUST MITES!!!

  19. Gigi: This is 100% leather. :-)

  20. The sofa is gorgeous . Your mom looks so happy and it is evident that she loves it .Indians are big time doilies users and we have come up with a solution to prevent them from slipping ( a sticky strap like they have in shoes). My mom in law loves to use them when we invite guests over for lunch/dinner.

  21. I think she will like the leather in time. It is soft and comfy. I have to laugh because she is just like my mother.

  22. lol...I like the part about birthday, Christmas, New Years, Easter, Mother's Day gift for next year...that's how I think too. I don't know why I feel compelled to explain when I give something extra expensive.

  23. I remember the angst, after mom died and we had to sell or junk things in her basement. It is a familiar story, especially for those who lived through the depression.
    I miss mom and dad.
