I saw something in the Chicago Tribune last month that really caught my eye. It was an article called Muscling Past Fitness Myths.
This is the part that interested me:
"Some fitness myths are harmless half-truths. Others, however, scare
people away from working out or lead to injury. The spot-reduction myth
-- which holds that you can, for example, flatten your stomach by doing
crunches -- wastes time, effort and can even add size to your middle. Ab
exercises can strengthen muscles. But they don't remove fat because
from a metabolic standpoint, fat isn't connected to the muscle it
covers."
So there you go. I don't have to do sit ups. Granted, I haven't done sit-ups since college so no harm done.
So how do you get rid of that tummy?
Another myth about sitting for long periods being OK if you exercise also got my attention. It said:
Try it: Get up at least once every hour; pace around your desk or do five jumping jacks to remind your muscles that you're not dead."
Yes, I've read and heard that you shouldn't sit at your desk, computer, whatever for long periods. I have to be careful because I have been doing a lot of work on the computer. I'm making more of an effort now to get up and move around.
I went to Zumba last Friday despite the fact that I was really tired. However, Art is right. It was a good tired.
I'm imagining my son reading this and I can see him smiling. He's been on my case to get more exercise for a long time. You see, Jon? I'm trying. I'm trying.

"Myth: You can sit for long periods if you exercise.
Truth: Unfortunately, you can't exercise away the effects of
sitting for 10 hours at your desk, said Alex Hutchinson, author of
"Which Comes First, Cardio or Weights?" Long stretches of sitting are
associated with cardiovascular disease, independent of how much exercise
you get.Try it: Get up at least once every hour; pace around your desk or do five jumping jacks to remind your muscles that you're not dead."

An inspirational post to all of us. I read recently that we should get up and 'move' every hour. Sometimes we forget to do that if we work at a desk job, or forget how long we've been on the computer like I do sometimes. I'm happy to say we got lots of exercise lately.
ReplyDeleteGood to know, Kay, especially the one about stomach crunchies.
ReplyDeletegood advice, especially about abs...
ReplyDeleteApart from being inspirational the post motivates too. But the tummy still remains elusive.
ReplyDeletenuthing on the computer is so important that it should keep you from getting up every so often for physical and metal reasons. Aren't you so glad that we have flat screen monitors nowadays or do they emit just as much radiation, yikes.
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Fortunately I'm not a "workout person." I'm outside a lot gardening etc. and then hike miles each day with my GSD. Unfortunately, I sit reading and computerizing too much each day, especially in the winter...
ReplyDeleteBut I do get up, I just don't do anything but walk the dog--ever so briefly,he has a weak bladder that needs tending.
ReplyDeleteI really did think that if I exercised for half an hour in the AM that I was good for the day. The lies we tell ourselves.
Thanks, I will try to do better.
Thank goodness I don't have to put crunches on my must-do list. They give me cramps.
ReplyDeleteNice to know this :)

I had heard that little tidbit a few years ago and now you have confirmed it! Thanks for that info about sit-ups. Good for you going to Zumba Kay!!
ReplyDeleteThe one tiny yet primary problem I have with exercise is STARTING!
ReplyDeleteDogs get lots of exercise for their owners, which is the second best thing about them. I do sit-ups every day in class, and I've actually wondered what good they do. But then if I miss them for a week, I'm sore again, so I know they do something, even if they don't flatten the tummy.
ReplyDeleteIt's funny, I've grown fond of doing full-body pushups. I would NEVER have thought that would happen! -)
Hubby must have read something similar online, because he was telling me how sit ups weren't worth doing :-)
ReplyDeleteI do get up from time to time. Mostly to check on the mail. To get a cup of coffee or to put it on. I usually get tired from all this work and set down in the recliner, turn on the TV and look out the window.
ReplyDeleteHooray, no sit ups, one less thing to feel guilty about not doing. When I'm sewing I keep the iron some distance away so that I have to keep getting up and down. But I'm getting lots more exercise now that we have the puppy and look forward to getting even more as she grows. Much more fun.
ReplyDeleteI did 20 situps every morning for years and years and I have problems in my back from doing them.
ReplyDeleteI might return to the gym someday. Dianne
This old body of mine is not able to do sit ups anymore. Never liked them when I was able anyway.
ReplyDeleteKay,
ReplyDeleteDo you want to know how to get rid of a flabby middle? I have discovered this all on my own and I am happy to share it with you... cover it up with clothing!!! See, now that's not too hard, is it?
:-)
Kay
I was reading a recent Woman's Day issue "surprising ways to burn more calories". Myth? It said to "DRINK COFFEE or any caffeinated beverage (even green tea), which appears to kick up metabolism by at least a few percentage points. Many studies have also found that having caffeine before a workout can help you exercise harder and longer. Try having a cup of coffee or tea in the morning and an hour or so before you take a walk or work out."
ReplyDeleteI think keeping your metabolism up may be key to preventing diabetes too. (So drink up lol) The article also talked about eating protein over fat and carbohydrate (protein requires more calories to digest), whole foods over processed, getting enough sleep (two nights lack of sleep can slow your metabolism) and exercise ("weaving bursts of speed or intensity followed by a short recovery into your workout boosts your metabolism and gives you a bigger bang for your workout time").
Wishing you a happy holidays!
L.
love these facts Kay, I'll take these 2 points in mind as I go about my routine! I think this means we have to actually cut extra fat from our diet re the flat abs. Easier said than done.
ReplyDeleteI used to sit at my desk for long periods of time. It damaged my health and eventually led to my union insisting all typesetters get 5 minutes off per hour.
ReplyDeleteIn the last couple of years, I've had a much better answer. A Golden Retriever. Get up, give the dog some vegetables, return to desk. Get up, give the dog more vegetables, return to desk. Get up, let the dog out. Return to desk. Get up let, the dog in, give dog vegetables, return to desk.
I'll soon be in great shape. No longer in cardiovascular danger.
K
GOOD tired, yes, right on ART!
ReplyDeleteSitting weakens us. Let's DANCE!

I actually got on my new elyptical today!!!! yipee....I'm on a roll!
ReplyDeleteI do a lot of running around between kids, home and work but still take out time for few minutes of yoga. That keeps me going i guess.
ReplyDeleteI walk at least 30 minutes everyday. I would like to step it up a little bit more. I try not to sit at my computer more than an hour a day. I just can't sit that long anymore.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for doing zumba. I tried it, but I have poor coordination and felt like a fool. They have a senior zumba class at the Y, I tired it once and found it easier that the class for the younger set. I should go try it again.
L: Woohoo! I drink mocha every morning.
ReplyDeleteSally: I do Zumba GOLD (for seniors) and it's much better for me than the other wiggly stuff.
This is a great post and should inspire us to exercise. I always have a hard time getting started. When I was younger I use to exercise with Jack La lane.
ReplyDeleteGood for you, Kay. I was doing so well a year ago, but now I've gained my weight back and am not exercising. I need some inspiration. Maybe you will rub off on me.
