iPhone... Duuuh!

We've never owned an iPad or iTab or i anything before but decided to jump in when we changed cellphone plans recently.  Ed, our Supertechie son-in-law said it would be fun and ordered one for us.

Well... it arrived and last night, tired as he was, Ed spent a couple of hours (on Skype) with us registering the phone and walking us through some things on it.  This was the first time we tried the touch pad thing.  There's also this Siri that allows you to talk to it.  We don't get along with Siri yet.

Everything is supposed to be intuitive, buuut... my intuition is sadly lacking so I'm still rather dumb founded.

We finally managed to get everything set up with Ed's help. The speaker worked, the earbuds worked... buuuut when we tried to just use it normally with our ear to the phone, we could barely hear Ed when he called us on it.

We were not happy.  It appears our new iPhone was already defective.  Ed suggested we go to the Apple store in Ala Moana and have the phone looked at.  However, my brother said they might not help us unless we bought the phone from them.

We went to bed rather perturbed.

I'm not sure when Art thought of it, but he did.  It occurred to him that he hadn't taken that clear plastic covering off the phone.  We always have a hard time doing this because we're afraid of scratching anything new.

He removed it this morning and voila!  It worked!  We could hear clearly.  The plastic protection cover is what was preventing us from hearing properly.

We sheepishly called Tiffany this morning on Skype and told her.

She called across to Ed who was working in his office, "Ed! My parents just found out that they couldn't hear you last night because they hadn't removed the plastic covering off the iPhone."

There was loud, prolonged laughter.

I have a feeling Ed is going to have a  good story to tell about his in-laws when he goes into work tomorrow.

  1. That is hysterical. Sounds like something we would do. I am a big chicken when it comes to contemplating iThings. Just don't think this old brain could comprehend all the splash.

  2. Yup, you have to be smart to use a smart phone! I don't own one, myself. Have fun with it.

  3. Hi Kay,
    I don't use i-phone.
but my husband and many my friends use it.
In Japan most people on the trains touch i-phone or other cell phones.
they play games or text to somebody.
I also text to somebody often there. coz I can't seem to text at home because I do other things at home.

by the way reading this article, I remember Ala Moana shopping center.
    I've been there twice.
I can't get expensive something but it was fun to see various things.
If I could go to Honolulu for 5 hours, I went there easily....

  4. I am glad you figured out the problem...and got a good story to tell too :)
My smart phone is definitely smarter than I am.

  5. Everyone of my siblings has an iPhone, but I like all the gadgets AND to have a regular phone. I'll break down one day and get one, I suppose. I'll remember to take the plastic cover off... :-)

  6. That is so much fun! I love how you share your foibles. One of my facebook posts said 'it was a good day as I remembered to shave BOTH armpits, and rinse hair conditioner out of my hair before stepping out of the shower.'
It's taken a long time for me to be able to laugh at myself!!!

    Cheers from Perth!

  8. Son #2 just bought himself the newest iphone (his third or fourth one...as a computer guy, he always has to have the latest things). I watched him and Son #3 try to "stump" Siri a couple of weeks ago. It was hilarious. I think Apple has a far ways to go in that regard.

  9. That is too funny Kay!! I'm glad that you can hear now though :)!

  10. Siri? Something I never heard of. But this is so funny about the plastic cover. You guys are just too cute. :)

  11. Kay -- glad the "older folks" could figure out why the new gadget wouldn't work well. I haven't "i"ed anything yet either. Too much stuff. With my hearing loss, I've always tried out the phone's volume before buying. Let us know if the i-thingie is worth learning all about it and what you use it for. DrumMajor

  12. You must provide updates on your Iphone experience. I have toyed with the idea of getting one, but don't know why I would need one. Any thoughts? Dianne

  13. Ed probably got a kick out of it and you probably won't hear the last of it. Hope you have a nice Thanksgiving.

  14. The only iThing I have is my computer, it's an iMac. My cell phone is just a cell phone. I really don't want a phone that does fancy things. Dick just got a new one that "takes 3-D pictures" except it really doesn't. What it does is take pretend 3-D pictures. What possible good is that?
I love the plastic cover story, though. Yes, you may not have heard the end of it! LOL

  15. What a hoot! Sounds like me!! All my kids have iPhones, but when my "old fashioned" cell phone died the other day, I was really glad none of the kids were around so I could just go replace my Samsung phone. It really does all I need as far as a phone is concerned. Although I have to admit, I'm curious about all the things they can do with their phones!! Have a great day!

  16. I didn't want to sign a service contract so I went the Virgin Mobile $35 unlimited data 300 minutes route. Unfortunately iPhones don't work with Virgin Mobile service, so I had to settle for a Motorola Triumph...I'm sure the iPhone is way better. After 3 months, I am still only getting used to the phone. I like the touch screen feature, that's pretty intuitive. In fact with my husband's kindle with keyboard, I find myself touching his screen to move it....mobile data transmission will be the wave of the future so we might as well get used to it. Especially on the go, on a trip...

  18. wow Kay, way to go...an iphone! I'm sure you'll love it once you get used to it...all those apps to learn and have fun with!

  19. I don't want an I-phone. It's too small. And I have no desire to be in touch all the time.
It's irritating to see people pecking away at those things everywhere.
    My Nokia does just fine.

  20. I am using Ashton's old cell phone for my own. She bought Mark a Trac-phone for Father's Day and set it all up for him. Its been a long haul but we think he has mastered the basics...just calls no texts! I did have a chuckle over the plastic covering...that is something that I would do as well!

  21. I liked what Gigi said - you do have to be smart to use a smart phone.
We don't have a smart phone because we didn't want to add to our monthly service charges. we have an inexpensive cell service, because our Comcast bill is so high. But I would love to have one. I'm just afraid I would always be on it, just like the kids these days.

  22. LOL! My FIL got an iPad last year and he didn't use it for MONTHS until we showed him how to use it. He still only uses it to play sudoku =)

  24. I loved this story Kay, it's just the kind of thing that we would do. I don't think you are alone, but it did give me a good laugh, thank you!

  26. We have loved our iphones and wondered why we were so slow getting them. My youngest son and daughter-in-law have had them almost since they were first out.

    Pretty cool.

  28. That was a delightful story and I am so glad you decided to share. It makes the rest of us not feel so badly.

  29. What a funny story! Kay, you will LOVE your iphone when you get used to it. I've had one for a couple years now and I also just got the new iphone 4s. You will be amazed at all the things you will be able to do with it. It will be like a little computer in your pocket. I give you 30 days to realize the treasure you now own. Think of it as a new relationship. Remember all the fun when your relationship was brand new, taking the time to get to know each other, etc? Have fun!!

  30. Everybody: Thanks for the encouragement. I don't know if I can recommend this yet because I can't even figure out how the heck you DELETE contacts that are old. They migrated over from Art's address book and we can't get rid of the old addresses. I still don't get the iPhone concept well. We're going to have to learn how to use this thing first.

  31. The iPhone is fantastic. I've had mine for 2 1/2 years & should be updating to the new one. The problem is with two pieces of software I have on my Macbook Pro--Indesign and Photoshop. If I update my phone I have to update the OS on the Mac which will then not allow my two adobe programs to work. Pretty silly as I'm always the one who says you must be changing with the times. Our granddaughter has been using my iPhone since she was 18 months old. It's very intuitive. You will be so happy with yours.

  32. I imagine the story will live on for years. When DH first got a computer he was quite upset because his monitor wasn't working. He had done everything that my son had written down and nothing. He has supplied the family with years of merriment though, as someone had turned off the monitor unbeknownst to him.
