Ikea has always been one of our favorite stores. They have wonderfully fun, affordable and creative things that look beautiful in your home. However, I have to laugh when I see things posted on Craigslist in Hawaii asking for more than what the item cost new at the store. I have a feeling some people in Hawaii think Ikea is a high end store.
Tiffany loves their very "affordable" lunches so, of course that's where we ate.
And here are the treasures we are bringing home to Hawaii: a duvet cover for my mom's futon, ceramic knives (which I hope will be as good as Tif's which she bought at a high end store), 2 bath rugs, 3 night lights, a wall socket unit and some colorful plastic bowls that were dishwasher safe. I hope everything works out well when we use them in Hawaii. Whatever the case, we had a lot of fun. I wish we had an Ikea in Hawaii.
We have an Ikea about 30 minutes drive away, though I haven't been for a year or so. I tend to go at this time of year as they have lots of cheap and cheerful Christmas decorations.

ReplyDeleteI love IKEA too. I went there with my sister when I visited her in Florida and she bought a futon and cover that is just perfect, and sensibly priced, too.

ReplyDeleteThere will always be those trying to make a quick buck. Do you know i have never been to Ikea? Well truth be told I haven't bought any major or minor for that matter furniture in a while. hmmmm i must get my sister to take me there some day.

ReplyDeleteSame here...never been to an IKEA store. I read the largest IKEA store is located in China, as large as a football field. Why is Hawaii the last place on earth to have some of the best stores...

I like IKEA, but it is just to overwhelming for me. I can't think when I am in there. I love what you bought. Let us know how the knives work out.

ReplyDeleteOur condo in Seattle is 100% furnished with IKEA things. It looks very nice and it did not cost us a fortune to make it look comfortable and stylish.
ReplyDeleteWe started shopping at IKEA in the 70's in Switzerland, and we still have bookcases, end tables, and a bed we bought then. The Swiss store was the first one opened outside of Sweden. It's funny that the store in Seattle seems the same as the one we went to so long ago. But of course all the stuff's made in China now!

We took the kids to Ikea this summer. Isaac decide he wants to work there. He loved the maze-like arrangement of the huge store.

Really late commenting on this thread. I move A LOT, so I love the flexibility and modularliness (I know that's not a word) of Ikea pieces. Plus, they are so easy to dress up with fret work or great handles. I recently moved to Oahu and was shocked to find that furniture prices are double or triple what they are on the mainland. The choices are really limited and the quality of affordable pieces is non-existent! I'm currently attempting to purchase Ikea pieces on line, have them shipped by Ikea to a freight forwarder on the mainland, have them shipped to Oahu, then have them delivered from the Oahu dock to my condo in town. Believe it or not, adding together the price of the items and all the shipping, the total cost is still about half the price of what comparable items (if they can even be found) cost in Hawaii. That is why you see postings on Craigslist in Hawaii at such "high end" prices. It might be high end prices for a mainlander, but, in Hawaii, it's just a reflection of how much it cost to get the item here in the first place.
ReplyDeleteMy brother did warn us to bring over good furniture before we made our move back to Hawaii. I wish we had done a better job of it, but we thought the move would be too expensive. It's been MORE expensive to buy furniture here than it would have for us to buy it on the mainland and move it over with our things. The choices here are definitely limited, but we've finally got the pieces we need. Thank goodness that's over with! I HOPE I never have to move again.
