A House Full of Sick People!

The day we arrived in Illinois, Art caught a cold and I got jet lagged.  It took me 2 weeks to recover and Art is better, but not quite perfect yet.

One week after we arrived, my son-in-law returned from Singapore and promptly caught what seemed like the flu.  He recovered from jet-lag in a couple of days and the flu after what seemed like only 4-5 days.  Good grief!  How does he do it?

Then Tif got sick.  And KC has that occasional sniffle that threatens to become worse.

I am hanging on here... just barely.

I keep waiting for that other shoe to drop.  Tif says I'm being pessimistic.  I suppose.  I'm taking my vitamins.  I'm taking Airborne.  I'm washing my hands.  I'm spraying the bathroom sink handles with germ killing spray.  I'm trying to do more of the cooking.

Still... I think it's just a matter of time.  I'm just hoping and hoping that I can stay healthy for another week and a half.  Then I'll have my mother to take care of me.

  1. Sorry to hear that some of you are/were sick but it's also heartening to hear about all that mutual caring.

  3. Aw, Kay, good luck! It would be awful to get sick on your vacation. I haven't had a cold in months, but I do have colitis, which is not fun, either. Best wishes to you and your family.

  4. I do hope you stay well. I know how awful it is to get sick when you're not in your own home with your mom around to take care of you. These things have a way of making the rounds, but you got your flu shot, so hopefully... no fun to be in a house full of sick people! :-)

  5. Gosh -- cold weather is not good for folks used to Hawaii.
Funny how Mom's are good, no matter how old we get as "children." I'm willing to bet your lovely Mom has some sake in some soup to keep you well. (Mainlanders have used the whiskey and honey stuff for eons.) Ask for her secret. Mine is zinc cough drops at first symptom and Claritin (loritidine.)DrumMajor

  10. Kay you made me laugh will all your prevention exercises! You're one of a kind. It must be the time of year, so many people are getting sick. Maybe the fact that you got your flu shot will help.

  11. Well, if you do get the lurgy it won't be for want of trying to avoid it. What a shame though to have had to spend so much of your holiday looking after other people and suffering from jet lag. Here's hoping that you stay well.

  12. David and I go for the hot tea with lemon and honey. Always works. Take Echinacea too. Very good herbal remedy for building up resistance. Be careful about the Echinacea if you take heart meds. Some herbals are contraindicated. Chicken soup is wonderful. Dianne

  13. We take Ester-C at the first hint of a cold or when a flu bug is circulating. Sorry to hear that so many in your house are sick. I'm a believer in chicken soup. We regularly boil Costco $4.99 rotisserie chicken after helping ourselves to the meatier parts for dinner and the breast for sandwiches. Doing this at least once a month seems to be a good ritual and has hopefully kept our immune system up.

  14. Stay well! I wonder if we should wear a mask when we fly. I think I picked up the bug I fought on our trip on the plane.

I haven't taken Airborne since I stopped teaching in the high school. I used to swear by that stuff. I wonder if it has made the difference in you staying well.

  15. Sorry to hear about all the illnesses. I hope everyone gets to feeling better real soon. I'm a chicken soup believer. I also like hot lemon tea with honey and peppermint. They always make me feel better somehow.

  16. Here is my advice... eat plenty of apples and get lots of SLEEP. I promise you that the two combined will ward off illnesses. There, my medical advice didn't cost you a dime!

  18. I hope you continue to resist those bugs! I know how important it is to you to spend as much time as you can with your daughter and granddaughter.

  19. perhaps, we should take that flue shot. Usually I don't pay too much attention to the public announcement.

  20. L: I never thought of using the Costco chicken bones for soup! For goodness sake! What a great idea! Thank you. I love it!

Kay G: Aha! Apples!!! Now that's one thing I haven't tried. I'm eating it tomorrow! Thank you!

Ron: Art and I both got the flu shots the day before we left for Illinois. He didn't get the flu on the airplane. It was just the common cold. However, it's presistent. His running the 8K race just as he was recovering probably did NOT help him at all.

  21. Omagosh! Is this such a lousy time to get sick or what?? It's not fair...that's all I have to say. You should be able to spend your time enjoying kith and kin... not hiding from sickle bugs and nursing other family members back to health. What kind of vacation is that? I hope everyone sprints back to the wellnice finish line and you cam enjoy some of your holiday a bit more. I'll throw a lucky penny in a wishing well.

  22. Everybody: Thanks so much for your advice. I'm going to bed now since it's late. We have a full, busy, hectic, CRAZY week ahead. I CANNOT get sick! We're down to the last week and there is so MUCH to do!!!
