Fall in the Midwest

It's cloudy, cold and rainy today and it's been that way since we arrived.  One thing about weather forecasts on the mainland, they tend to be accurate.  I like watching the weather news in Hawaii, but mostly to laugh because it's rarely correct.  It really depends on which street you live on.  It might be rainy a mile away, but it'll be sunny over your house in Hawaii.  The sun is always shining some place in Hawaii.

So it's rainy here.  It was a rather surreal feeling to be back in the Midwest.  For one thing, there's so many more tall trees, so many more bushes, lots of grass.  It's also fall so trees are changing their colors.  It's glorious, and will be even more so when we're scheduled to have some sun.

I love this flower garden that Tif has created under the weeping cherry tree.

We also noticed this chipmunk tunnel in front of the house.   Chipmunks are cute but the MANY tunnels they've dug are problematic.  They've managed to undermine the concrete walkway and some of the house foundations in the area.

Tif put this plastic snake next to the house to scare them.  It hasn't worked.  I saw one chipmunk stop and laugh at it.

The chipmunks here are just as smart as the mynahs in Hawaii.

  2. I didn't know chipmunks tunnel. I did wonder where they lived. We are in for a bit of rain here, too, but we had a glorious sunshiny day yesterday! :-)

  3. Hi Kay. Got up because I slept enough. Will probably go back to bed soon. I have never seen chipmunks, but can appreciate what a nuisance they must be when they undermine the foundations of houses.

  4. Yes, it must be strange to go back to the Midwest after living in Paradise...

Son #1, who now lives in Arizona, came back to Missouri for a visit. He kept looking around saying how GREEN everything looked

  5. I don't think Utah chipmunks ever tunnel, but lots of other animals do. They can be a real problem for golf courses and cemeteries especially.

I've often wondered who decided that Illinois was in the midwest. Where does the west begin? Pennsylvania?

The flower bed is lovely. Enjoy your visit.

  6. I can't imagine how chipmunks survive the winter with the heavy snowfall there. But I guess they do.

  7. Squirrels dig holes in the autumn, to hide nuts for the winter, but they don't tunnel. However, moles do tunnel and leave unsightly mounds of soil on the surface.

It sounds as if Hawaii and the UK share the same forecasters; we can get a general idea, but we don't necessarily get the weather they forecast on the day that they say we will. And the weather in our village and in the city of Wells 6 miles away varies wildly, mainly because we're at the top of the Mendip Hills and Wells is in the plain below.

But we're enjoying an Indian sumer here for a few days with warm sunny days, even though the leaves are falling around us and we know it can't last for long. It's great to get the short sleeved shirts out again though.

  8. Ah, those chipmunks are clever little guys! It does sound as though you're having a great visit in spite of the weather! Hope all of you have a great weekend!

  10. Chip and Dale always had a funny laugh. Do you think these little guys are related? At our house it is voles. Dianne

  11. Mara and I saw a chipmunk at Lake Louise the other day. She says I promised her "wildlife" in the Rockies. I said chipmunks count, but it ran past us too fast for either camera.
Sorry you're having so much rain. Tif's yard looks lovely.

  12. I always think of The Chipmunks, especially the Christmas song. What are really bad in the West are gophers and moles.
Yes, it can be mighty pretty in the Midwest, especially in the early fall. It almost makes up for those winters.

  13. I never thought of chipmunks being a problem in residential areas - we don't get them here. I hope Tif is successful in getting rid of them - its a concern the damage they do. Hope the weather clears and you enjoy your time.

  15. Ha! A laughing chipmunk! So funny. I used to have the same trouble with moles. They are awful! Pretty garden.

  19. What a hoot. Here it is mice. Yes, 3 cats, but lots of mice. They've been tunneling around my new frog pond, and I had to rejig the sides of the pond.
    Cheers from Cottage Country!

  20. Wow, I didn't know chipmunks tunneled. We have a couple at the cabin and I love to watch them. I thought the holes or tunnels in my yard were from snakes...may have to rethink that hmmm...LOL.

  21. That plastic snake is too funny. Took me awhile to figure out which piece of plastic was supposed to be the snake!
