Tai Chi Outdoors

We’ve taken Tai Chi as a night class in Illinois at a health center and then in the evening at a recreation center close by our home in Hawaii.  Both times, it was indoors in a concrete building.

We now take our classes which are given free of charge by Master Pong and his assistant teachers at a park.  We really feel the difference.  It’s so much more pleasant to be outdoors.

I feel as though I can gather more of the “chi” energy from the earth around me.

When I look up during the exercise, I see the branches of the monkey pod tree as birds sometimes flit by.  It did make Art nervous when one sat right above his head, but at least the bird didn’t choose to drop anything on his head while he was doing his moves.

The monkey pod flowers are still blooming on the tree and add feathery color to the beautiful shade tree.

There’s about 40 of us in this class and it’s really such a nice feeling to be learning together.  We do this every Thursday.

I hope Master Pong never catches us at Costco eating that half hot dog that Art and I share after class.  He did lecture us earlier in the year about a healthy life style.

I’m still in awe of the fact that he teaches so many classes and all for free.  We always end each lesson with a new way to say Peace.  It encompasses all religions and cultures.  It is a way to bring us together in harmony.

I love it!

  1. How energizing to do the tai chi outdoors. I used to do it with a class when I lived in Florida . I did it for 7 years but do it sporadically during the 10 years I've lived in Montana.

  2. I am starting Tai Chi in September. It is something I've wanted to do for a long time and am so looking forward to it! (I figure I'll be busy helping our daughter and new grandbaby at home for a few weeks, then I'll begin :)
Thank you for your sweet comment Kay, we feel so blessed...and I finally get to shop for girl baby clothes!

  3. Tai Chi has always appealed to me as a peaceful gentle exercise. Unfortunately, there are no classes offered here. A natural setting fits the type of exercise.

  6. Years ago I took a tai chi class outside next to a stream. It was so lovely and I have never forgotten it, although I don't remember much of the exercise. Maybe I'll start again, here in Bellingham. Thanks for the reminder!

  7. The way you write about your Tai Chi class says a lot about what a good thing it is for you.

  8. Oh, what a delightful teacher. Our class here was in a church hall, and I too wanted to be out under the trees. Lovely.

  9. I do love Tai Chi and take classes here at the complex three times a week, but they can't match having outdoor classes! Beautiful place and what a great instructor! Hope you have a lovely weekend, Kay!

  11. That sure looks wonderful. And your sharing that half dog reminds me of the time that Chandan and i had joined this yoga classes . We always had our breakfast at a food joint nearby our yoga school and used to worry about being caught by our Yoga Guru.

  14. I have Tai Chi on my list of things to try some day. Your enthusiasm informs me I should do it sooner rather than later.

I love the monkeypod trees. I have a table made of monkeypod wood, although I think it is illegal to cut them down anymore. Dianne

  17. Tai Chi? Nah. I have a similar thing I do for meditation, but I have a different master, whose name is Master Chuck. Here are a few facts about Master Chuck:

The Boogeyman checks his closet for Chuck Norris every night.

Chuck Norris once broke the land speed record on a bicycle that was missing its chain and the back tire.

When Chuck Norris had surgery, the anesthesia was applied to the doctors.

    Superman wears Chuck Norris underpants.

Chuck Norris was originally considered for the part of Jesus in the Passion of the Christ. However, the director realized that Chuck Norris cannot show the emotion of pain. He can only inflict it.

Darth Vader dresses up as Chuck Norris for Halloween.

Some kids piss their names in the snow. Chuck Norris can piss his name in concrete.

Aliens do exist. They're just waiting for Chuck Norris to die before they attack.

Chuck Norris can slam a revolving door.

Chuck Norris counted to infinity. Twice.

Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding.

Chuck Norris can sneeze with his eyes open.

Who would win the race between Ironman and Superman to the moon?

    Chuck Norris

Kay, if you wish to come over to Master Chuck, I'll put in a good word for ya. If not, well, I may have to post more wise sayings by Master Chuck to convince you.

    aloha,
    walt

  18. The bird on Art's head was funny and I can imagine that picture.

I am still on virtual vacation – a sabbatical of sorts but love to pop in on people. To me it is something like opening the door on the outhouse...

You are always in for a big surprise!

  21. I only ever tried Tai Chi once, and it was outdoors in a jungle in Costa Rica. Although I am clumsy and have poor balance, I enjoyed it very much. It seems to me it is an outdoor activity, although perhaps not in Illinois or Alberta.
Hi to Art from us in Russia. Dick is off doing the Peterhof tour. I've found the morning tours aren't for me, but am seeing much in the afternoons and evenings.

  24. Good Morning,
I just came across your blog while searching for an outdoor Tai Chi lesson. My wife and I will be visiting Oahu next week and I would like to find a free outdoor class, this would be our first introduction to Tai Chi. Does Master Pong still offer these outdoor classes and where would the location be. Thanks for your help.

    Regards,
    Brian
