I'm a Real Senior Citizen Now... I Think!

I've turned 62!  I'm not sure what constitutes a Senior Citizen, but I've always thought this was the magic number.  I figured this was when you could get the great discounts.  Thing is... it's changed now.  You can get that Senior Discount sometimes when you're a baby of 55, maybe younger.  Who knows?

Anyway, I was planning to ignore the day.  Art and I don't pay a whole lot of attention to our birthdays.

I opened some cards that friends and family had sent earlier.
My daughter and her family sent me some work-out blouses.  This is perfect for Zumba classes that are starting up again this week.
They also sent this great mug for Art and me.  It will always remind us of that great time we had at Yellowstone last month.

Art thought it would be a great day to go and see the 3D Harry Potter movie at the IMAX.

It costs $17.00 a person!!!  Sheesh!

However, because of the Senior discounts it was $13.50.  Yae!  Well... it's still a lot, but what the heck!

The theater was almost empty.  It was fabulous!  We really enjoyed the movie and I think mom is now spoiled.  She'll probably only want to go to 3D movies from now on.  The only problem was they had the sound too loud.  It was deafening so I stuck tissue in my ears to soften it.

After the movie I got happy calls from both my daughter, Tiffany and son, Jonathan wishing me a happy birthday.

Next stop was a restaurant called Off the Wall which serves a lot of Okinawan food.  I'm not quite sure how it's different from Japanese food, but we really enjoyed it... especially mom.  I think we loved the servers the most.  They were so friendly!

We skipped the chocolate filled andagi dessert because I wanted a Ted's Chocolate Haupia pie which we picked up later.  Yum!

Before the night was over a dear friend brought over some herbal teas and this platter of tropical fruit for tomorrow's breakfast.

Sitting at my computer I saw a bunch of birthday greeting e-mails and I'm smiling from ear to ear.

So much for ignoring my birthday!

  1. Happy Birthday belated wishes. WOW if you ignored your birthday anymore, you'd fill up the birthday week. That's always a great idea.... have the whole week for birthday frolics. You are a beautiful person and are entering a beautiful senior life.
Ha... it means discount at the movies.

  3. Well congratulations, Kay! Does 62 make you an elder in Japanese tradition? (I always think I'm old enough but not wise and honorable enough yet to be an elder.)

"MAKE it a good day" is so much more pro-active than "Have a good day" and that is exactly what you and the family did for your birthday.

The mug is precious and so are you!
    Happy new year of life.

  5. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KAY! You appear to be a pretty darn young 62-year-old! Glad you had a dandy day. That's a hoot that your Mom likes big, 3D movies---she's a youngster, too. DrumMajor

  6. Happy birthday, Kay! Yes, 62 is the beginning of being a senior, I think. Then comes the big one at 65, the bigger one of 70 after that. Having your mom around all the time makes you seem anything but a senior! She looks really young herself.

  7. Happy birthday, Kay. I'm kind of inclined to ignore my birthday too, but I've decided that if we are lucky enough to keep having them we need to celebrate them.
I love the coffee mug...what a great gift.

  13. Many happy returns of the day Kay. Do we share a birthday - mine's the 1st August? 63 today. Oh how time flies, and apart from a few extra pounds and aches and pains I don't really feel any different, and I don't suppose you do either.

  14. Thanks, everybody!!! It really was a great birthday. And last night my brother and sister-in-law dropped by with a cake and cards. I really am having a week long birthday.

Gigi: No, they can't move to Hawaii because it's hard to find jobs that pay as well as on the mainland for their fields.

  15. Yummmm tropical fruit. I love papaya and mango too. Somebody else has to cut the mango for me, however. I just mash it to bits.
Looks like you had a great day. Happy Birthday. Dianne

  16. Happy Birthday Kay! I'm so glad you had a great day! I turned 55 this year, and found it rather bittersweet when I went to the movies recently and they charged me the senior rate . . . without my saying a word. Oh well! Guess we can't be hot, young spring chickees forever!

  19. Happy Birthday youngun. 62 would be my goal age if I had a choice. The 60's were great.
That sure was an expensive movie. Maybe I shouldn't have cancelled Netflix.
    Enjoy your 62nd year.

  29. Ah, our b'days are very close. I turned 59 on August 2, and like you, I tried to ignore it. I think I was more successful. I tell almost no one when my b'day is, and my daughter is usually so busy with camp, that she too ignores it. This year, because we were keeping Leeya during that time, my daughter sent an edible bouquet, a large display of fruit that looks like flowers.

My husband knows that it's useless to buy me anything because I am so hard to please. This year, though, he overheard me saying I would like a new cuisinart bowl as my old one was cracked. After the bowl arrived, I complained because it didn't come with the top or the plunger so he ordered that for my b'day. The replacements cost about one third of the original cost of the machine 30 years ago. No senior discounts there!

I don't consider you a senior until 65, so you've got a ways to go.
