How Could This Happen?

Art said I should post about this and I said, "No way!!!"  I don't want the world to know how stupid I was.  I don't even want my children to know how stupid I was.

On the way to the optometrist's office, I tried to figure a way out of telling the truth about how I managed to cut my eye.  In the end I told the truth.

I was getting ready to go to another brain health class with my two classmates, Diane and Joanne.  I knew we'd be back in time for me to get ready for the big family pot luck that we were hosting for Art's family.  I'd already done the cleaning,  cooking and baking in preparation.

Well... I decided to put on my make-up with extra care.  I still had quite a bit of time left over before Diane and Joanne came so I put on some mascara I happened to have.  I don't usually use mascara, but there it was and I thought I'd play with it. Well... my lashes were sticking together.

Ummmm... and well.... my make up table is also my sewing table and there's my pin cushion.  The needle looked like the perfect thing to separate my lashes.

And.... well... I don't know how it happened but perhaps I blinked.  That's what Art thinks and I sliced my eye.  I felt the pain shoot right up into the crown of my skull.  I saw stars.  In other words, it hurt like the dickens.  I waited for the pain to subside and looked around.  I saw a shadow or double vision on the edge of things when I shut my right eye.

I thought I might still go to the class and see if my eye felt better later.  Maybe, everything is OK and this will just be a lesson for me.  Maybe my eye isn't really cut.  Maybe if I rest a while, it'll be like it never happened.

I called my optometrist's office and explained what happened.  I thought they could just tell me what sort of eye drops I should use.  "Come in right now!"  she said.

So I had to skip my brain health class, just what I needed too.

The doctor checked my eyes to see if my eye sight had been impacted.  Nope.  I could still read the letters out of my left eye.

Then she put a dye in my eye and looked closely.  She was startled.  This wasn't good.  She saw that I'd cut my cornea right down the middle.  She said she couldn't believe I was just sitting there and not in agony.  Well... it did hurt.  I told her it was an aching, burning sort of feeling.

She prescribed antibiotic drops, eye drops to lubricate my eyes every hour and a special drop before I go to sleep so that healing tissue would not tear off when I wake up in the morning.  I was to call her immediately if anything felt worse.

She also said to try to stay off the computer and television and take naps during the day to give my eyes a break.  Good thing I can still post this since I know how to touch type without looking at the screen.

I've called my children and told them what happened so they don't freak out reading this post.

Before I left the doctor's office she said, "Don't you just hate it that this sort of thing always seems to happen when you have so much to do?"

My only saving grace?  I saw right away that my optometrist uses mascara.  She was very sympathetic and told me about a brush and comb thing that you can use for your eyebrows and lashes.  She says it works great.  She never once told me I was stupid.

It's really nice to know... but I think I'm staying away from mascara from now on.

And... I guess my blogging will be impacted for awhile.

When I was a little girl, my mother always told me not to put anything sharp near my eyes.

She was right.

  1. Eye injuries are sore, aren't they? I was gonna say 'eyesore' but it ain't funny at all. And yea, quick to the eye doctor. Way back when I was picking pineapple they always said to report an eye injury from the million's of pineapple torns, report it immediately or else by that night, you'd be pounding down the doctor's door. Had my own fair share of eye injuries from other things, and I still keep the medicine in the refrigerator. I bet you will too.

  3. Oh Kay, I am so sorry!!!! It sounds very, very painful. I remember several years ago when Gregg scratched his cornia and the pain he went through. Your doctor sounded very sympathetic too. Hope you feel better quickly.

  5. So sorry!!! I hope it heals quickly. We all make those "how could I have done that???" mistakes in life. I know that I didn't expect to still be making them at my age, but, I do, and more frequently than I'd like..
blessings and hope you are all better soon :-)

  6. that's not fun BUT we all do stupid things every now and then. Thanks for sharing yours...a good warning for all of us. May you heal quickly and take care of yourself. We'll still be here when you return. You could change your party to a pirate theme and wear a black patch over your eye...lol!

  7. A needle???omg.... Well, the fact that you were able to type out this long explanation must mean you are on the mend.... I have to be honest, your retelling of what happened made me cringe.. I am so glad your eye will be ok....

  8. I'm just so glad that you're okay! I think we all do things like this now and then and then ask ourselves, "what were you thinking????" And I guess, for those moments we're not thinking, but hey! we're human! Take care, you're lovely without mascara anyway!

  9. Oh my! Yes, I can see why you didn't want to tell on yourself.
But this is serious stuff, as well as being a damned inconvenience!
I got pink eye near the end of my teaching career and couldn't wear eye make up for a few days. After that I just stopped wearing it. Now only very occasionally do I even bother.
Beauty at any price? No, not so much.
Be a good girl and take care of that eye.

  10. I'm amazed you were able to do that to yourself. I'm a blinker so no doubt the injury would have been worse on me. Do take care of yourself. We're only issued two eyes and we need both of them.

  11. Oh Kay, so glad you'll be ok, what a terrible freak accident. So don't give up on your mascara, just get the separators the eye doc advised when you feel ready.

  12. I´m so glad to hear nothing was damaged permanently! That was scary and I hope you feel better soon. Good think you´re not blogging daily anymore, right? :)

  13. Oh, I'm so sorry to hear this, but I am glad to know you can mend and be good as new. So you miss a few blogging days, we'll all still be here when you get back. Take good care of yourself, and yes, don't poke yourself in the eye!

  14. I can't for the life of me work out how you managed to do that, but clearly you were wielding that needle quite ferociously. Poor you. I haven't worn make up since I was in my early twenties, so I don't think I'll start now if that's what happens! I do hope it improves soon.

  15. I stopped wearing mascara when I noticed every time I would look in the mirror, most of it was under my eyes rather than on it. That was a real scare, Kay, and I so glad you went right over to the doctor. And yes, we all do things we wonder about later, but I think you might have actually saved somebody's eyesight with this little post. I know nothing sharp is getting near my eyes now!

  16. Been there; done that. I especially worry about because both my eyes have implants from cataract surgery. And yeah, I have one of those thingies!

  17. Ooh, Kay - ouch!! I've poked myself in the eye before now and it hurts. I can't imagine how painful your eye must have been. I do hope it's feeling much better now. Take care.

  19. OMG Kay!!!! I had a hard time even reading this post! I was squirming all over the place just imagining!! It's so nice you shared the story with us in such graphic detail! I'm so glad you are going to be okay. I just cannot imagine how that felt. Yuck.

  20. OH, Kay, I'm just like Joyce. I could hardly bear to read about this. I kept squealing "oh, oh, oh!" until Dick asked if I was alright.
I once got a piece of sand under one of my contact lenses during a sandstorm in Mexico, and I remember how much it hurt although it was 1982. I had to put a patch on it just so our neighbor could take me to the doctor, who washed out the grain of sand and gave me eyewash to use for several days afterward.
I can sympathize and empathize and almost, but not quite, understand your pain.
Seriously, it hurts just to think about your poor eye, but I'm glad Art had you post about it just in case you can help save someone else who has a similar idea.
Dick says hi and ouch, too, and hi to Art.

  21. I'm so glad your eye will be okay. I know many of us can identify with doing something "not so smart" and injuring ourselves. Take good care of it while it is healing.

  22. Wow how did you manage to write all that! about such an unfortunate accident!! and still keep your sense of humor? All I can say is, as I read it, I had to grip the edge of my seat!! How sore it must have been. I haven't worn mascara in such a long while, when before it was a daily routine. Now I will always think of you should I use it again...maybe never. I always keep spare new makeup just in case I want to experiment lol, maybe not a good idea. Kay, thank you for sharing and hope you get well soon.

  23. I doubt it will help you to know, but you're not the only person who has done this. I haven't, but I did once run into a former student in the hospital (I was there to visit someone) who had done that exact thing. She said she used needles to separate her lashes all the time. Of course it does get more difficult as we get older and can't see as well.

Eye injuries are painful. I hope you heal soon.

  24. Oh Kay, please take care of your eye! I'm so sorry this happened to you! Get better soon!

  25. You poor thing! Not stupid, just not wise. I have used the same thing, without the accident.
    Take care.

  26. Kay -- it's not the mascara that's a problem (which I haven't worn for 20 years....) it's the sharp stick. Injured corneas usually require patching, so go to an M.D. eye doc soon if it doesn't get better soon.
    Don't run with scissors either.
    Rest! DrumMajor

  27. That is just too scary. Our eyes are so vital to our well being. I am glad you went to the doctor and please do as she said.

  28. Flabbergasted! That's what I am. How awful for you, Kay. I hope it heals quickly. You do everything the doctor says. Don't mess around with your vision. And, don't feel stupid. Accidents just happen. ((Hugs))

  29. I hope you are not reading this comment because you should be resting your eye. Hopefully, Art will read the messages to you. I am so sorry this happened to you. Accidents only take a second. It is always shocking to find we have been injured or injured ourselves.

Please take care of your vision. Do what the doctor says. Don't beat yourself up for doing this. Get the best medical help you can on this. I too wondered if your eye should be patched. No expert here. I just hope you get better soon.

  30. OMG, I hope you are recovering okay, keep us posted. My son had a cut eye, not sliced, he got a piece of foundry steel in it and it caused a very small cut. Take care and let us know how it turns out.

  31. This morning, early, I was up because my kids were setting off early for race day here in Seattle. Just as I was finishing commenting on your blog, I began to black out. I got on the floor, and thought it had passed, so I got back in my desk chair. the next thing I knew Irene was standing there whimpering. I fear she thought I was dead. I was certainly not all there for a bit.
I guess I was doing the old thing of visualizing your injury happening, combined with the early hour and my poor night's sleep. It's not the first time I've passed out over blood, my own or others.
I got Irene settled in front of the TV watching PBS cartoons and went back to bed to recover.

  32. Linda: Holey Moley! Yikes!!! I'm so sorry my post added to your light headedness. Good gracious! I hope you didn't hurt yourself fainting. That is so darn scary. Please rest up and get better. I really do feel better myself. My eye starts stinging every so often, but eye drops really help.

I feel like I've had more accidents lately. Tripping, etc. I've always read that about seniors and now here I am...

    Please take care of yourself.
