Wordpress Back-Up

A lot of people have had such a bad time with Blogger.  I've heard of a person or two even losing their entire blog.

Several bloggers have suggested switching to Wordpress.

I decided to give it a try.  Here it is if you'd like to take a peak.  I titled it Kay's Musings.  This is the link to it.

I don't really understand Wordpress yet.  I haven't even figured out how to put a blog roll on it and won't bother.  It's too much for my technology challenged mind to absorb and understand.  Things are just not very intuitive for me on Wordpress.

However, since I've been worried about backing things up, I thought I'd just back up my Blogspot blog on Wordpress.  I don't want to switch over completely because I think you lose a lot of the connections you make.  I also like a lot of the Blogspot options.  So, I'm NOT moving from Blogger, but I'm feeling a little safer knowing I have a back-up option in place. Phew!

POSTSCRIPT:  I'm seeing in my Comments that some of you might be interested in backing up your blog on Wordpress also.  To save you some trouble since it took me a while to figure this out, you can go to the Tools on the left hand bar of the Wordpress Site Admin and IMPORT all of your Blogger posts and comments with one Magic Button.

The only problem I had was that it also imported all the "Labels" I had on Blogger and changed it to Categories that I then had to delete.  That's where I am now.  I have no idea yet how to create a blogroll link for places I like to visit, but since I'm only using Wordpress as a back-up, I figure I won't worry about it.

  1. I visited your wordpress site and like it. But, since I am used to your blogspot format, I think I'll stick with that for now. Good luck with both!

  3. Some Wordpress blogs load very slowly and others are just fine. Yours works great and looks very much like the blogspot one. Good idea to have a backup.

  5. Aren't you clever. What a good way to back up your blog. I keep a copy of my posts in Open Office but if I fry my computer, that is gone also. Think your way might be fool proof.

  6. That's a good idea, there are a lot of people getting nervous about blogger lately.

  7. Wordpress is the cat's meow. I was tipped off about it when I started my blog for a graduate class and my professor recommended it. There are many things to learn but I have come to love it. Dianne

  8. You are much smarter than I am, Kay.
I've just been keeping my fingers crossed that Blogger will hold things together :)

  10. Kay -- I'm confused. But I can still see your blog at the same site. I'm a member of the KISS Fan Club: Keep It Simple Stupid, 'cause I don't want too many steps to get to the spot I want. (To see if there are new orders for patients, after I've chosen the patient chart, I have to click 13 steps!) Cheers, DrumMajor

  11. I lost my first blog nearly three years ago -- well, it's still online, but I can't access it. When Blogger starts having some of its growing pains and begins acting screwy, I get really nervous, but I still prefer it to Wordpress -- well, at least for now! Hope you have a great weekend, Kay!

  12. I've had a Wordpress blog for a bit but it tries my patience and I'm so familar with Blogger that I am probably here to stay. I print all of my entries though and keep them in binders. Someday when I'm long gone my great grandchildren will know their Granny in a different light.

  13. DrumMajor: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to confuse anybody. I'm NOT going to end this Blogspot blog. I'm staying right where I am. I just wanted to back-up this blog IN CASE anything happens. I guess I'm just paranoid. Blogger is still my home.

  14. I have been lucky and Blogger has been working okay. However, I might just do a fail-safe thing and make a Word Press blog, too and cross post. I added your new blog to my 'follow' list!

  15. Backing up stuff is all important to me. These words are me...all that will be left when I die. When I first started to blog, I moved several times before I settled on Open Diary. It was the first of the Hive Site blogs. But then it began crashing and once it was hacked and lost everything. I backed up to Wire for a while, but Wire vanished. Then I moved my back up to Blogger, and there I have found wonderful new friends. :)

I backup in general to an older Gateway that has a giant hard drive in it, then I back my journals and photos up on CD. I used to use ZIP drive discs, but those ZIP drove discs don't hold a fraction of what a CD will.

I agree about Buddhism. I have several friends with alters. I just wish those ancestors kept journals so I would know more about them. :)

  16. And you say you're technology challenged! What a brilliant idea. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to back up my blog onto Wordpress but it sure sounds like a good idea. I must tell Dick, but first I'm going to check yours out.

  17. This has been worrying me for some time - well, to be honest, it's been worrying Barry. 'You might lose everything' etc, etc. He thinks Blogger is hopeless - but it suits me and my limited understanding. Nonetheless, I will check out Wordpress - come to think of it, I'm sure I signed up to it a couple of years ago *sigh*

  18. There should be a Wordpress users forum out there with solutions for common glitches. Independent sites, even. Wordpress has been around for a while.

  19. Your idea of doing a back-up is great. Thanks for the information on it. I would hate to suddenly lose everything.

I worry about sites going to "pay only" to publish and then dropping those who don't pay a membership. I guess I worry about crazy things.

I use a Mac and haven't had too many problems with Blogger. I will stick with what I know.

  20. You are so brave and smart to do such things, Kay. I should do it too.
Your new blog actually looks very nice.

  21. In WordPress, under the dashboard, is a title, Links. That's where you set up the blogroll. You can even decide if you want your links to be public or not. I have a few that don't show up on my public page, but I can see them when I go to Links. It's really easy and intuitive. Trust me, I don't do anything that is complicated on the computer. That's why, right now, I'm hating on QuickBooks. 8-)

  26. Rambling Woods: I have seen that they do get back to you to answer questions pretty darn quick which is amazing. It will be an excellent form of back-up.
