I've been hoodwinked. I usually don't let people in the house unless I really know them. What possessed me to let vacuum cleaner salesmen in?
I answered the door and a fellow who looked like he could be a friend's son appeared. He handed me an air purifer that he explained was wonderful and that they were handing it out to all the neighbors to try.
He said his company, Aqua Systems just wanted to get the word out about their company.
Sounded OK. He looked trustworthy. He said he just wanted my opinion about that air purifier. He said he just wanted to spread the word about their company that they wanted to start in the neighborhood. He said he was just collecting opinions and the more opinions he got, they could win a trip to Reno.
Sounded OK. Like I said, he looked like he could be a friend's son. I always help my friends' children when I can.
Then he said he needed to come back to show me what it was about and that it would be brief. I told him I could only give him a half hour max because I had friends coming over.
He said OK.
That's when his partner showed up with a Rainbow air purifier which was ALSO a vacuum cleaner. I told him I already had two vacuum cleaners.
He demonstrated how great the vacuum cleaner was. And it was very good. It certainly picked up a LOT of dust in what I thought was an already immaculate house. My mother is very fastidious. BUT the price tag was $4,000.00. I told him, "No way."
He insisted on cleaning all of our little area carpet showing us the dust it was picking up. He insisted on cleaning the sofa too.
It was now well past that half hour mark and my friends arrived to go with me to the Farmers Market. I told the vacuum salesmen they needed to leave because I could not leave them with my mother and it was past their allotted time.
Well... it took them quite a while to get their things together to leave while my friends waited outside.
The kicker. The little gift of the air purifier that fellow gave me before, to have me listen to them ... he took it with him as he was leaving!
The double kicker. When I was gone, my mother went out to get the mail. They were still there outside of our house and told her they were thirsty. She went back in the house to get them canned drinks!
Mom says they cleaned her carpet so it's OK to give them some drinks.
When she told me this, I was alarmed. I called my brother who works for the Honolulu Police Department and he said that if they allowed me to take so many photos of them, it should be safe. I have photos of their faces also, but I didn't think it would be fair to post them because they're probably just doing their job.
I've learned my lesson now. I'm never letting another salesperson or stranger into the house again. I hope I don't get a call from my son and daughter scolding me if they read this post.
One of my friends who was waiting for me got a good look at both of the fellows and she says she can see why I allowed them in because that first fellow I talked to looked so innocent. However, she gently warned me to be more careful next time.
But you know what? It was a rather remarkable vacuum cleaner. Except that I thought they were trying to sell an air purifier. I'm sure they were perfectly legitimate, hardworking fellows working in a tough economy. However, I feel like I've let my guard down and opened myself to something that wasn't wise.
I was a teacher, and I can also learn.
POSTSCRIPT: I just checked online and have seen some terrible horror stories about Rainbow vacuum cleaner salespeople. They appear to prey on seniors. It also states the vacuum cleaners run from $1,000 to $2,000, not $4,000. On the other hand, some people have liked their machines. But, more importantly, a lot more people have been really badly scammed! Beware!

Uh, yah, um Kay -- In Kansas, we don't let strangers in the house for any reason. We have Wicked Witches, Flying Monkies, and Scarecrows without brains running around. I've been single forever, so I'm used to being leery. I'm more concerned they may return to rob you, unless they left a card for the business with a location address. They purified your air with sweet talk. You are much too kind, but maybe they just have lots of aloha and desire to work hard. Funny, my friend from high school has a son who cleans carpets...And, when is Art coming home? Be careful. DrumMajor
ReplyDeleteDon't be too hard on yourself, that's exactly what they're trained to do. And at least you weren't taken in so much that you bought one, no matter how good it is. If you like it you can probably get it much cheaper somewhere else. But I hope you don't let anyone else in, as you never know.
ReplyDeleteI know everybody has to make a living, but not a good idea to let vacuum salesmen in! I'm sure I've done this before, a long time ago.
ReplyDeletelifie is a learning experience...lol!
ReplyDeletewow, thats just a bit creepy and I think your mum is also too trusting. Its sad we have to be so guarded but we do,I'm glad everything worked out well,, sometimes it doesn't.Have a happy saturday
ReplyDeleteAt least we know it happened, and you will be on the lookout for anything suspicious, like them coming back and casing the joint! Glad you have friends in the police department. 4 grand for a vacuum cleaner?????
ReplyDeleteOh, Kay, I never let sales people in the house anymore. In fact, I've been bothered so much lately that I went to the hardware store and got a "no solicitor" sign for my front door. I haven't noticed any since the sign has been up.
ReplyDeleteThat "no solicitors" sign sounds like a good idea. We should all have one.
ReplyDeleteThe same thing happened to me, and the machine did such a good job, I had already signed on the dotted line when Dick walked in. Needless to say, he blew a gasket, had them tear up the contract I'd signed, and told them never to darken our door again.
He is now very over-protective about me buying anything. I have been prescribed a CPAP machine by my gerontologist, after a 10-day trial proved that it really helped me with my sleep apnea and even made me feel somewhat energetic. Dick was very nervous about me being taken in by a slick salesperson until our family doctor told him it was okay, this is the medically-recognized treatment for sleep apnea.
I still hate the idea of those guys taking advantage of your mother, though.

Yeah, they could have robbed you and your mother. Or raped you. Or murdered you. Blah blah blah.
ReplyDeleteThis is why I always look through our peak hole in the door. The ONLY ONLY ONLY time I open the door is if I know the person -- my neighbors or the mail man or friends or people I am expecting like the roofers or fence installers...
Rainbow vacuum cleaners and Cutco Knives both operate like this. SCAM artists to the hilt. However, in both cases, the products are amazingly good. The sales techniques aren't. Nor do you want to work for these agencies. They are notoriously bad at paying their salesmen who work on commission.
ReplyDeleteI've warned my students about these companies for years, both as customers and employees. They were always trying to hire my students who had been trained to be excellent sales people.
Don't feel too badly. I once bought a jug of some miracle cleaneer from a cute kid who knocked on my door. I think it was 99% water, and did not clean a thing. I seldom let anyone in my home. Dianne
ReplyDeleteBeen down that road before Kay, I wouldn't be too hard on yourself either because I'll venture to say that most of us have had that same situation. I have no problem letting the kids of friends in with a sales pitch, especially when they are starting out and need some experience. It’s a tough business to make a living and a salesman has to be pretty aggressive and sometimes very passive aggressive. So, while I know they have a living to make I feel that their sales pitch is too in your face, they hardly give you time to speak and then when you don't buy whatever they are selling, the next tactic is to make you feel guilty and even a bit stupid. I was told once, "Why on earth wouldn't you want to buy this?", with a look of pure amazement. I used to do as my mother did before me, "Oh, come in and have a cup of tea", because it was the polite thing to do. Back then that was the way of things. Now I won’t even open the door if I don’t recognize a family member of a friend, sad but true.
ReplyDeleteI stopped even opening the door for people that I don't know. The complex where I live now is locked all the time to outsiders, you have to have a key card to get in. You can let people you know in by merely pressing a button on your cell phone, so it's very secure and salesman free!! Glad nothing happen to you!! Stay safe and have a great weekend, Kay!

For me the scariest part was them approaching your mom after you left the house .I do believe in heart that not all people are bad but personal safety always comes first specially when we hear unfortunate incidence happening because of some act of kindness like your mom's.Glad everything is good .Take Care .My regards.
ReplyDelete"....perfectly legitimate, hardworking fellows working in a tough economy," generally don't go around the neighborhood selling $4000 miracle household appliances because they're already aware nobody has that kind of money nowdays on a good day, everywhere. Good reminder, though, um, we've all been there, and foremost these bozos have much more practice and rehearsal than you have in the game, btw, sounded much like a bait and switch well which isn't my idea of genuine honesty moreover because they're tag teaming you. And then there's a warranty issue, lot of gadgets work well for a few weeks but they don't last due to el cheapo internals. I believe the law says that you have something like a 24-48 hour grace period to have a change of mind.
ReplyDeleteWe are a bit out of the way so we rarely get someone at the door – it has been years in fact. That vacuum cleaner is too expensive even if it is good – I wonder how many people buy it from those guys.
ReplyDeleteI also know what you went through, but I bought their vacuum. These people are always hard to ge rid of. Glad it turned out okay for you and your mom.
ReplyDeleteThese people are awful. How can such a thing cost $4000? I nearly got ripped off by somebody like this, except they promised me some steak knives for entertaining their shtick. I ended up on our local radio speaking of the deal. Get a hair cut, get a real job!
ReplyDeleteI'm back in the world of blogging again. I enjoyed the break but began to miss my blogging friends.
ReplyDeleteI think we've all experienced lapses of good judgment from time to time in our lives.
It's always nicer to learn from experiences where no harm has been done.
The amazing thing to be is that someone must be buying from them or they wouldn't still be out there selling.
ReplyDeleteYeah...I don't even answer the door if I am not expecting someone and check them out first...Not to say these guys weren't doing their job, but it just isn't a good idea...glad you and Mom are OK..
ReplyDeleteSheesh. A $4000 vacuum!?!?! Who on earth would buy such a thing.
ReplyDeleteI don't even open the door in Los Angeles, regardless of what they look like. You just never know.
xo jj
Whaaaat tha bleep?!?!!! $4,000 for a vacuum, I could buy new floors and a whole house full of new carpet for THAT. Glad it all worked out for you and that Mom is ok.
ReplyDeleteI came by especially to wish you a terrific weekend.
Glad nothing bad happened, but also that you won't be doing it again.
ReplyDeleteI have heard that these truly are amazing cleaners, but that price is prohibitive.
ReplyDeleteI have found that a fenced yard stops them cold.
Perhaps a sign for your door stating "Soliciters have been known to disappear after visiting this property."
Rainbow vaccuum scammed a couple of elderly people about ten years ago according to an article in Honolulu newspaper. It seemed they preyed on elderly people selling them vaccuum cleaners when they had hardwood floors!!!
ReplyDeleteIn fact after obit notice was published, a guy stopped by my mom's house and was trying to talk her into inviting him in until he saw shadows moving about the house and the salesman just took off.
I have a few friends who have these and love them. That being said -- NO ONE gets into my house to show me anything ever!
ReplyDeleteScam vacuum cleaners suck.
ReplyDeleteThat was pretty scary to read. Phew...so relieved that you were not hurt. Don't do that again!!
