Aggravating Hard Water Deposits

I've been having a problem with ugly, scaly, hard water deposits around my bathroom faucet.  I've tried Lime Away, vinegar, and a number of other things that just wouldn't get rid of it.  I don't remember having this much difficulty in Illinois.  Does Hawaii have more minerals in the water?

My fingernails have taken a beating trying to remove what I could from it.

Art thought he'd try this Soft Scrub Total.

It has a spray and foam option.  He thought the foam clung better.

We let it soak for a while and then scrubbed it with a teflon Dobie pad.

It didn't remove all of it, but most.  I could also scrape off the left over deposits easier when it was dry.

Not bad.

I can live with this.

  1. Must be the water, all right. They say that hard water is better for the humans, though, than soft water. So there is an upside, getting all your minerals through the faucet! :-)

  3. I got tired of fighting the hard water residue a few years back and decided we needed to get a water softener. It is great when it comes to getting rid of the build-up on fixtures etc. I don't like how it affects my naturally curly hair though. I guess there are always trade-offs.

  4. That's good to know. I've been looking for a good product myself to get rid of hard water stains. Have a major plumbing problem right now under the kitchen sink. One part of the pipes is leaking so badly, have to get the plumber in now. It's like these things are all coming at once. We have a leak in the roof too and a man is going to come out for that soon :(

  5. Kay, the water over here in makakilo is so hard it deforms the faucet when it comes out. We've tried the Lime Away and vinegar too, no luck. I've given up and plan to use my metal grinder and belt sander.

Ok ok ok, i'll give the Soft Scrub a shot.

  6. We have the same problem with those calcium deposits. The good news is that the water and the garden get along. I like your clean new faucets. Dianne

  7. We have a product in Canada called CLR, which removes calcium, lime and rust.
Good for Art to find something that works. "Soft Scrub" sounds so user-friendly, although names can often be deceiving.

  8. Oh, I can get behind a cleaner that does most of the work. Looking good. Have to see if they sell it here.

  9. We had hard water growing up on the farm in Oregon. It was well water and it tasted great. Now we have recycled, purified city water.

  10. We wipe down our faucets after use with an absorbant cloth. So far after almost 6 months of use, I don't have any water spots!

  11. L from Waianae: Thank you for your comment, L. Sigh... I've tried to wipe down my faucets every time I use it, but it's such a pain in the okole.

  12. LOL agree! I didn't think we could keep it up but trying to keep it new looking is good incentive. You must have wondered who the strange visitor from Waianae was, so I thought I'd say something finally. I love your blog and found it via GiGi which I found via Charles Smith. I learn a lot from reading your blog, and see a lot of teacher qualities in the way you organize and explain. Thanks for spending the time to do this for your readers.

  14. Nope, nothing invented so far gets rid of lime with a single wipe. Only in the commercials.

  16. I think it's done a good job! There's another product called CLR that I've seen in the stores that's designed to remove calcium, lime, and rust.

  17. If no one else has mentioned it, Lime Away is very good. Here in Florida, hard water is also a problem.

  18. I agree,it must be the water. You should have try to purchase a water softener.

  19. Make sure you clean the faucet itself too, there are a lot of particles that cling to the sides of the faucet. It's likely an issue with hard water so be prepared to wipe down the sink next month too!
