Movie Recommendation: Finding Forrester

We ordered Finding Forrester from Netflix and watched it last night. I'd forgotten that we'd seen it before. In fact, I forgot almost everything from it. Maybe this is good because I liked it so much that in another few years I can enjoy it all over again without remembering what it was about...again.

I got this blurb about the movie online:

"Because of scoring exceptionaly high on a state wide standardized exam and being an exceptionally good basketball player Jamal Wallace is sent to a prestigious prep school in Manhattan. He soon befriends the reclusive writer, William Forrester. The friendship leads to William to overcome his reclusiveness and for Jamal to overcome the racial prejudices and pursue his true dream - writing."

I was surprised to hear Iz Kamakawiwo'ole on the soundtrack singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It's amazing how many times we've heard Iz's rendition in movies. It was also a surprise to see Matt Damon in a cameo.

I really would like to recommend this movie. It left both Art and me feeling really good. I love it when a movie leaves you feeling uplifted.

POSTSCRIPT: Two posts went up today by mistake (mine) so I've moved the other one about the Ladybug to tomorrow. I've saved the comments to add once it goes up also.

  1. Thanks, think I'll order-can't remember if I've seen it before or not but good entertainment is difficult to find. I just watched Billy, the early years of Billy Graham and found it so interesting to learn more of his life in a dramatic movie.

  4. Yes, it WAS a good movie. I think we got it from he library when Son #3 was still living at home, so it's been a few years ago.

BTW, you're right. It's amazing how many different times I've heard that version of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

  10. Thanks for the review Kay. I am a big fan of Sean Connery and tend to watch everything that comes along. This was very familiar and like you I think I saw it when it first came out and would probably enjoy watching it again. As for Iz Kamakawiwo'ole we were first introduced to his sweet voice when a colleague of Gregg's knew we were going to Hawaii on vacation, so when we got there we bought one of his CD's and was absolutely wow'd. I often listen to him. By the way, your header photo of Lake McDonald is absolutely stunning. I hope you've got over jet lag by now.

  13. I have been spending some time with you on your blog. I read all your trip to Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. What a lovely trip you all had – the pictures are stunning. I went to Glacier National Park when I came to the US in the 60s and again several years ago when my daughter was spending the summer in Missoula studying Native American women health for her master’s degree. We went to Waterton in Canada and then missed the turn to get back to the US and had to drive all night to go to another crossing. I enjoyed your trip very much and enjoyed looking at all the beautiful flowers you photographed.

I’ll keep this movie on my list.

  18. Dick had a joke about us and Sean Connery on Facebook today, so I've just sent him a link to your blog about this movie.
    The joke?
My wife and I were having a discussion about which stars we would like to play us if a movie is ever made about our lives. She asked me who I'd like to have play me. I said "Sean Connery" and she said "In that case, I'll play myself."
The joke wasn't original but it was sure true. I adore Sean Connery.
