What to Pack?

OK... I'm starting to make a list of the things we need for our Yellowstone trip. What to bring, what to bring...

So far this is what I have. (Click to enlarge and see more clearly.)

Anything to add? The nice thing is we're going to the mainland. I know you've got drugstores and Targets and supermarkets and... I know I don't have to worry about much except the gas prices.

I guess all our blouses will be long sleeved. The one big mistake we made was in going too early. Glacier National Park's Going-to-the-Sun road will still be closed. I'm hoping we'll get an early spring thaw that MIGHT get the snow off the road. What are the chances?

Oh my... I almost forgot! The wheelchair! We're bringing the wheelchair because I don't know when my mother's knees might give out again. We're not taking any chances, no siree. Art and I will be sharing a suitcase. My mother and aunt will each have their own because they aren't really quite flexible on what they can do without.

So did I forget anything?

Oh wait! Tif said I should ask my nurse practitioner about a Scopolamine (transderm-scop) patch. She says it's supposed to help with car sickness and I can use it for our cruise later in the year also.

OK... anything else?

  1. You must be getting excited about your holiday. I always take too much of everything and Barry's even worse so no advice from this quarter;-)

  5. I notice "laptop" is in bold. Rightly so, Kay. I almost forgot the cable that allows me to transfer pictures from my camera to the laptop and remembered it just in time.

  6. sounds like you have it all, how about a map or travel guide?

  7. How about something to swim in (in case the hotel has a pool, or that heat wave materializes).

  8. Your list made me smile, you're so organised. I'm a great list maker too, but not perhaps quite that organised. How about mobile phones?

  9. Weather is very unpredictable in the middle states. It can be cold one day and hot the next. Take at least one set of warm weather clothing. Maps and travel guides, of course, to study each evening for the next day.
It sounds like you will be doing laundry frequently.
Remind us, when do you leave?

  10. Flashlight? Pocket knife?
    Rubberbands? Travel duct tape?
Do you pick up your water bottles at your destination?
With my sensitivity to bites, I always take a little Ziplock with vinegar, cotton balls, toothpaste, and Zyrtec antihistamine to treat the sting/bite.

Wow, you don't have to take passports, eh?

  11. Sounds like you are ready for a great trip! I do hope you have decent weather! Hasn't been much sun or spring in much of the states this year! Ah, but my heart feels lighter today as I sit at my desk looking out the big window -- there's a patch of blue sky and sunshine!!! Look forward to following your traveling adventures, Kay, through your wonderful photos! Enjoy!!

  12. Yes, that patch works. G did the testing for you. You are going to have a wonderful time. Bring a fleece jacket.

  13. As Linda said, there could be some hot weather. Long sleeves are good, in case there are mosquitos. As you get closer to departure, check www.theweathernetwork.com to see what is expected.
There could also be rain. I always travel with a little packet that contains an emergency rain poncho, although I've never used it yet. It's probably so old it will tear along the folds when I open it. LOL
Spring and early summer are more dangerous in the mountains than fall and early winter because there's more chance of avalanches, but the park rangers will let you know, and the roads, as you mentioned, will be closed until perfectly safe.
I still think we should throw Lindy in the car and meet you for coffee somewhere. Westerners think nothing of driving long distances for short visits.

  14. Ohhhhhhhh my God!!! One suitcase? Impossible!!!! I congratulate you! I need to take lessons from you!

  15. Kavita: Somebody actually gave us sets of traveling chopsticks. Still haven't used them though.

DJan: I actually forgot our cables one time. Thanks for the reminder.

Lin: Right! Art is planning to just rip off the parts we need from the AAA guides. I'll add it to the list. We DID actually forget to bring it once. Art left it on the kitchen table.

Kathy G: I really don't have a good swim suit that will hide what needs to be hidden.

Amanda: So true! I shall add that to the list too!

Dina: Flashlight? Hmmmm... I wonder. Travel duct tape? I've never brought duct tape before. Yes, we'll need our passports because we'll be crossing into Canada. Great idea about the antihistamine since my mother is allergic to bites and stings.

    Linda: Soon.

Maggie: That's nice to know since I'm prone to car sickness.

Kay L. Davies: I have a rain poncho I haven't used in 10 years also.

Kay Dennison: Art and I will have to share a half suitcase. It's going to be tricky. I think we'll have to leave the extra pair of shoes home. There's just not going to be enough room in the van.

  16. I think you should have insect repellant. Mosquitos can be a problem. I think you have just about everything. I can't imagine traveling and sharing a suitcase! It just would never work for us. Have a great time. Have you ever been to Yellowstone before? Make sure you go to Jackson Hole if you get a chance.

  17. Did I see travel alarm clock and it's special, funky batteries?
You get carsick, and live in Hawaii? So, you should avoid the ride to Hana on Maui, eh? Have fun! Watch out for the animals! DrumMajor

  18. "Bear repellant?" - (just teasing.) DrumMajor

  19. Sally: Yes, this will be our 3rd trip there. I just love Yellowstone and Glacier! I'd prefer not sharing a suitcase, but this is a special case I'm afraid.

DrumMajor: I usually don't have to sit in the waaay back of the van, but Tif will be up front navigating with Art and I'll be in the back with KC so Tif says I'd better be careful. Tif is prone to extreme motion sickness.

The Hana drive is a doozy. We've not made the complete journey yet.

  20. You look like you have all the bases covered Kay. I'm very excited for you. You are going to one of my favorite parts of the States, in fact we are thinking of going back in September. If you have a chance to visit Lake Jackson Lodge in the Grand Teton, they have a viewing area where you can see moose and elk. They were pretty close up when we were there. Just follow the crowd :)

  21. Only thing I could think of you have all ready corrected. Cables. I forgot my power cable for my laptop last trip.
    You certainly are organized.

  22. I'm fascinated by your choice of 2 pairs of earrings. Why not just one and leave them in?

  23. thelaughinghousewife: I don't know. I just like having a choice, I guess.

  24. I make these typed lists, too and find when I plan, I actually take less. Wouldn't it be easier to rent a wheel chair?

The scop patches work pretty well and last for 3 days!! So said my husband.

  25. I haven't read the comments above mine so I might be repeating someone. Don't forget the cell phone charger, if you're bringing a cell phone and I always take a couple plastic bags with me on trips. I put my dirty clothes in them inside the suitcase so that the dirty clothes don't have to touch the clean ones (unless I'm going somewhere with an easily accessible laundromat.)

And a quick note about the transdermal scopolamine patch. I've worn one before and the directions said to keep it on for 2 days. I removed it a day early and got very nauseous. The medicine delivery is timed so make sure you wean yourself off of it by keeping it on the recommended time. Don't remove it until you're supposed to.

  26. Summer: Thank you, Summer! These are excellent ideas! I'd better put cellphone charger on the list right now. I do have a nylon laundry bag. Thanks for that reminder and the hint about the scopolamine patch. I really appreciate your advice.

  27. How easy is it to travel with your laptop? We are flying to New Mexico in June, along with our daughter and 2 year old granddaughter whose carseat must accompany us. I wonder if the laptop is just too much, but you're taking a wheelchair?

    ReplyDelete
  28. dkzody: We've always traveled with a laptop so I guess we're used to it. We take it as a handcarry and really use it during our trips for storing photos, organizing and e-mail, etc. We have a backpack that has a compartment for carrying a laptop. Yes, we're bringing the wheelchair for my mom and maybe for my aunt if she'd like to take a turn in it.
