The Star Advertiser is calling this the Royal Wedding Week. They reported that the wedding is 7,200 miles, 10 time zones and 20 hours of jet travel away from Hawaii. For us, it will be happening on Thursday with coverage beginning at 10 PM and the actual ceremony at midnight.
British ex-patriots in Hawaii are having wedding parties and some tea rooms are hosting special events which are sold out. Some people are planning to get all decked out with gloves and big hats.
Art says to count him out. He's going to bed since he'll be jogging at 5:30 on Friday morning. My daughter, Tiffany says she vaguely remembers seeing Diana and Charles' wedding in 1981. She would have been in kindergarten. Tif has a memory like an elephant so I'm not surprised that she would remember something like that. She says she remembers just walking in and out of the room where the television was on and that it seemed to go on forever.
I was younger then, too. I wanted to believe in fairy tales... sort of. Charles turned out to be sort of a frog (some might say toad) and Diana came to a sad and tragic end. Tiffany doesn't think she'll be watching since it'll be starting at 3:00 AM Chicago time.
I can't quite summon the excitement I did back then. And yet...
I still want to believe.
I guess I won't know until Thursday what I'll be doing.

I'll be watching, I think. That'll mean parking myself in front of the t.v. At 4:00 a.m....
ReplyDeleteThe trouble with Charles was that he had to marry a virgin - and there weren't many of the 'correct stock' around, certainly not of his vintage. As for 'highly intelligent' - that's debatable, though he was certainly well experienced.
ReplyDeleteI shall watch the wedding for the pomp and ceremony that the Brits do so well - it's about the only thing we can export these days;-)
Barry will take the dogs for a long walk as the forest will be more than usually empty!!
I'll probably just wait for the highlights of the wedding reruns since it will be brodcast at 3 AM here.

ReplyDeleteNo way will I be watching the actual event in the middle of the night, but I'll look at the pictures and read all about it later. I'll bet Londoners will be glad when it's all over and their lives can go back to normal! :-)
ReplyDeleteThere seems to be a lot of excitement around the world, perhaps even more than there is here in the UK. Shops are trying to cash in with lots of souvenirs and themed food etc, but, unlike when Charles and Diana married, I've not heard of any street parties happening, though there may be a few. I probably won't bother to watch, far more interesting things to do, but I might catch the highlights programme.
ReplyDeleteI've always felt that Prince Charles was very hard done by, especially by the media who found Diana a much more picturesque character and took her side against him. I tend to agree with Steve at the Pub.
The wedding begins at 1:00 a.m. here in the Pacific Northwest so I'll be catching the highlights later in the day.

ReplyDeleteI remember so clearly watching Princess Diana and thinking how lucky she was as I sat divorced in an apartment with a toddler...who would think it would end that way and then her death....Michelle

I think it will start being aired at 4 a.m. so I will see the clips on the news that night. We are moving to our new house that day, so I'll be really busy and I don't know when the cable company will be hooking up the cable during the day.

ReplyDeleteI am a couple of years older than Prince Charles, and I always felt sorry for Lady Di when she became Princess Diana. What a scary thing for someone so young! I was horrified when she died, and I wish her sons all the happiness they can get.

Kay, chin up. There will always be some bright eyed person looking forward to the next fairy tale. Might even be you. I think you have a fatal case of The-Apple-Falleth-not-far-from-The-Tree-itis. The kid is his dad's son, so what. Let him live his own life. If he makes some mistakes, well, in 10 years you can tell me "I told you so, you moron"

Nope, not watching. For one thing, we don't have TV service in our home. For another, I could care less.
ReplyDeleteI like my British friends, and find them fascinating and would happily attend a real or televised wedding in their families. But these two are not my family, and I don't find them interesting at all.
There's only one real Prince - the Prince of Peace - and when He returns, I don't want to be glued to the TV. I want to be among those who have already been raised up by Him!
I'm taping it, and my girls are coming over to watch. I even bought some used hats for dress-up!

Hi Kay! Yes I am going to watch. I like all the royal weddings in Europe, especially now all European crown princes( of Norway, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, Spain, Great Britain) and one crown princess(of Sweden) married commoners. As a matter of fact all our Dutch princes married commoners.

We went to Glacier National Park in July that same year and were not able to go up and over into Idaho as the roads were still drifted with too much snow but we drove up for a short distance and turned around and came back to the park and then left and came back home through the northern route and hit both Dakotas.
I admit yesterday I googled to see when the wedding was. I haven't been paying attention and keep seeing stuff about it. I thought it was done already. I wont be watching it live but I am sure I will catch repeats and highlights through out the day.
ReplyDeleteI will be going over to my Brit friends. There will be six of us and we will watch the wedding which will have been pre-recorded by our host. I remember watching Charles and Diana's wedding from beginning to end all those years ago and felt sad when it all came to an end, and after the death of Diana. I wish her sons every happiness in their own weddings. May they all live long, happy lives.
