I did want to read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford because so many of you recommended it. I was looking at the Hawaii Library System online website and found that I could put a hold/save on a book. Just for fun, I put a hold on Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet. There was a LONG wait list. I figured I'd get to read it next year, but lo and behold, I got a card in the mail a month later saying it was ready for pick up.
While at the library to pick up the book, I checked the Friends of the Library second hand book shelf. Paperbacks were on sale for 50 cents a book. I bought these six books for $3.00 AND I can loan them to my friends when I'm done!
So there you have it. I like my Kindle, but I still love my library!
Oh dear! I hope you authors out there won't be upset with me. I'm going to curl up with Mr. Ford's book now and finish it as quickly as I can so that the next person in queue will get it faster. (I'll have something to say about this book later.)
I'm reading Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet right now...the old-fashioned way!
ReplyDeleteI have had my Kindle for a couple of years and really love it, but I still go to the library regularly. I read "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet" (on Kindle). I'll look forward to what you have to say about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm on the board for our local Friends of the Library and we LOVE people like you! Our library system has a pretty good collection of e-books now that you can download as well and our Friends group is getting ready to give the County $100,000 to buy more! Sadly, this doesn't put any of us at the top of the queue though!
ReplyDeleteThat book is on my list. I've been wavering about whether or not to buy a Kindle, but like you, it's so very nice to have a solid book to share with others. And look how much good reading you got for $3!
ReplyDeleteSo now I'm even more confused about whether I should do it or not.
being a retired school ibrarian, I love actual books also. enjoy every moment reading...
ReplyDeleteKay, I've got a Color Nook and while I love it I read and listen to books from the library too when I have time.
ReplyDeleteI'm a heavy library user, and I often lend the books I own....but I still want a kindle...
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty much a Kindle girl for the following reasons. (1)I live in an apartment and do not want to move a lot of books. (2) I love the convenience of the Kindle. (3) I read only non-fiction and seldom read anything the rest of the world has a burning desire to read. (4) I don't mind paying for books to add to my Kindle.
ReplyDeleteI especially like my new one. It's much lighter than the earlier versions, and the rounded corners are great. The square corners dug into my palms.
I love libraries and bookstores - I don't own a Kindle and probably never will
ReplyDeleteI don't buy books (no space to keep them and very little money) and am happy to wait until they get to the library
I read Hotel on the Corner a couple years ago, and loved it. You can see what I wrote about it
here
Seattle is my next-door neighbor, so I loved visiting those parts again
I loved that book by Jamie Ford, Kay. It was so fascinating! Thank God, that I was never subjected to racism.
ReplyDeleteI don't mind buying books on my Kindle, as I am a published author, myself. I can also read at my leisure and not feel pressured by the 3 week limit libraries place on books.
I like my Kindle too, but I miss real books. Something about a real book is comforting; turning its pages, the smell of the ink, even the way it feels. I am a book nut and I love libraries. I am very content to idly spend time in a library.
ReplyDeleteI like to go to the library and pick up a book or two. One thing I like is when they instuled computers. Have a nice time reading.
ReplyDeleteI may get a Kindle or something similar one of these days when my eyesight demands it, but for now I'll stick to real books. I love the smell of the library and of the pages when I open a book; I love the feel of the paper and the fact that I can riffle through the corners continually when I'm reading, something which annoys Christopher inordinately. I haven't heard of the book you're reading, but will look out for it if you recommend it. What I do like though is talking books on my iPod, brilliant to listen to when I'm sewing. I also download radio programmes and podcasts.
ReplyDeleteKay I recently put a video on hold at the library, I was number 69! I figure I'll get in in April lol.
ReplyDeleteYeah, there's nothing quite like a book.
ReplyDeleteNothing can beat the feel and smell of a book - but Kindle is good for confined spaces:-)
ReplyDeleteYou really have to hunt to get good free Kindle books but they are out there. I check every day. The only disappointments I have had with Kindle books have been with the ones by established authors that I paid full price for. Two I just couldn't finish.
ReplyDeleteI do kind of miss my library. I was on a first name basis with my librarians.
Let us know how you like the book.
I love having my Kindle because of the convenience. It holds so many books and travels so easily. But, I still love my regular books, too, and I still buy both. You will enjoy your Kindle, I am sure.
ReplyDeleteI'm a mixed variety kind of reader when it comes to where to get the books I read. I read on my Kindle, but I hate getting a bill, so I tend to not order that many. I look for deals on books, or I trade with friends. I also love the library.
ReplyDeleteHappy reading!
Tom orders books from the library occasionally. I never have. We BUY BOOKS at Costco and from Amazon and occasionally a small bookstore or even Borders, but never at full price.
ReplyDeleteAfter we read them, we donate then to Goodwill.
I always have to pay late fees because I forget to return the books on time. I am probably responsible for the purchase of several new books with my late fees. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have an I-pad and I can read books on it too, but a real book is something you can read in bed. You can leaf through it and see how it ends and turn back to previous pages to recall events you already read, but forgot.Yes I definitely prefer a real book.
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend and Earth Hour.
We have a small library that has opened in our town and we try to support it. I've donated huge stacks of magazines in perfect condition, sadly some not even having been read, and several times we've taken in huge amounts of books. We have a big library not very far from us, but we purposely got our library cards at the small library. They are thinking of having a class on ereaders, so I'm sure that the two forms of enjoying books (I guess there are more than two) can coexist peacefully. My DH and I try to keep up a scripture reading program (sometimes don't do as well as we should) and we have recently turned to kindles for that. I have had mine for about a year but we got one for DH and it has been very good for him. He had a stroke that affected his right hand, and the kindle is much easier for him to handle. By the way, our little library is in a little wooden building that was the first school in our little town:

They even have a reading to the dogs program, but that one is beyond my understanding, lol.
I love books, too! BTW -- I loved Ford's book!
ReplyDeleteHi Kay,
ReplyDeleteI wanna read " read Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet", too.
but it takes more time to read books in english for me.
sometimes I read some paperback.
it's very good tools to learn new beautiful English sentences for me:)
