I Did It Myself!

Woohoo! I did it myself.

I've been waiting and waiting for Art to unclog the drain. His first advice was to lessen the shower flow and use less water to give it time to drain.

Well it was getting to the point where now the water was beginning to pool around his feet, too.

He was planning to get a metal snake to put down the pipe and unclog it.

I poured Liquid Plumber down the drain a couple of times and it didn't do the trick at all.

I decided enough was enough. I used a screw driver to take off the drain cover. What I saw was disgusting! There was all kinds of blackish gray mold mixed with hair, etc. I had to yank it out and clean it. Then I plunged and pulled out a bit more.

Wow! Suddenly, it started draining perfectly! I don't think I needed to use the Liquid Plumber before. It just needed cleaning and plunging.

Art just added some bleach to kill whatever biota was left.

He's very proud of me for figuring it out myself. I just told him, "By the way... I'm thinking of hanging that new clock on the familyroom wall by myself, too. I'll bet I can do it. If I add a couple more holes in the wall to get it perfect, no problem. Don't you think?"

Ho! Ho! Do I hear him going downstairs?

Postscript: I just snuck down and checked. He's already put up the wall clock and is now sanding down the sticky door so it'll close more easily. I wonder what other chores we need to get done.

  2. Kay, you're magnificent. Do you know how much plumbers make? Maybe you have a chance at a big-money retirement job!
I mean, you're pretty smart for getting Art to hang the clock on the wall by hinting you might do it yourself. Good for you!
The drain-cleaning pictures are interesting, but how about a picture of the clock on the familyroom wall?

  3. Good for you! Cleaning out a drain is a nasty job. Enjoy your freely-draining shower tomorrow.

  4. Same thing happened to us. The plumber got gobs of hair from the drain. He told us to get a cup made of screen and invert it over the drain. It catches Lisa's long hair before it goes into the drain. We clean the cup once a week. No need for a plumber anymore!

  7. Despite the fact that I was laughing uproariously by the end of your post, I am very proud of you. A bit of advice though, don't get too competent or Art might just go ahead and let you hang clocks and sand doors! ;)

  9. Oh well done you. There's such a feeling of triumph isn't there, when you work out how to do something like that and then manage to complete the job as well. It just seems that men don't get the same feeling or they forget how it feels, or else they'd get on with doing the jobs much more quickly!

  10. Eeuw, we could have used a warning for "graphic content" photo ahead. LOL just kidding.
We have a different system, but I have to do the (gloved) hand into the yucky drain myself from time to time.
Good on ya Kay, for taking the plunge(r) and just doing it yourself. Nice way of motivating Art too, hehe.
When water won't go down fast enough, I pour several pans of boiling water down the kitchen sink and the tub.

  14. And I did it myself! No kidding, I just found a Phillips screwdriver, removed the grate, and cleaned out the shower drain. It wasn't too, too clogged, but it definitely is much cleaner now. Thanks for the inspiration! I'm off to do the tub drain now....

  15. Good for you for 'doing it yourself', but better yet the manipulation of your husband to get a few more things done!

  16. I second everything that Linda said. It is great when we take things into our own hands and show them. A little guilt tripping is a good thing. :)

  17. Dina: That is very, very interesting, but for the $5.00 cost, I think I'd rather just buy the equipment. :-)
