Yesterday, one of Art's high school classmates stopped by with mochi that his family had pounded and made together. He wanted to share some with us.We decided to have the mochi this morning. Art boiled the mochi (glutinous rice) in water (to soften) while I browned the kinako (soy powder) and added sugar.
Then we put the mochi into the mound of kinako and enjoyed it for breakfast. Mom said she didn't want any because it was too much carbs. She says each patty is equal to a bowl of rice. Whoa! Oh what the heck! We decided to have it anyway because we only eat mochi once a year. It was wonderful!
Jim, one of our dear friends from Illinois called tonight. He said they didn't get our holiday newsletter and were worried that something might have happened to us. Oh dear! It's true that we've always gotten our holiday newsletters out in the first week of December. Oops! We'd decided to try doing New Years greetings this time.
Well... I guess I'll have to finish that first and then there's the holiday thank yous and the clogged drain. Then there's the New Years house cleaning. Yikes! I'm going to have a lot of catching up to do when I'm done. I wonder what you've all been up to...
Umm, shouldn't a clogged drain come first? :)
ReplyDeleteHow did you ever do all these things when you were working?
Kay, good luck with all your chores!
ReplyDeleteprioritize your tasks then enjoy them-it shows you have health to go forward. your treat almost sounds like scandinavian rice mush dessert. Yes, lots of carbs but once a year it's okay...lol!
ReplyDeleteAnother kind of mochi I love is MOCHI ICE CREAM!!!
ReplyDeleteYou should have told Jim and your other friends to read your blog every day. Then, they would not need your newsletter! In fact, why not put the blog link in your newsletter, too?
Sounds excellent!!!! I don't think I can get mochi around here. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteinteresting food items, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteKay, I love mochi! Sometimes I think I was born into the wrong ethnic group. The uni9verse had it's wires crossed somewhere ....
ReplyDeleteWe had a wonderful Christmas party, but other than that things have been pretty quiet in our life. You can read about The Christmas Party if you'd like, but don't bother trying to catch up any of my other posts.
I've been trying to catch up on some sleep! With my daughter, Robyn, here for five days over Christmas and seven years to catch up with and Adam's girlfriend, Amber, both here as well, none of us got a lot of sleep. We did have so much fun though and what a terrific Christmas it was! But I guess we'll all get caught up eventually! So glad you had such a great holiday, too!! Now for New Years!! Hope you and Art and your Mom have a very Happy New Year!

Dina: Yes, that drain should come first. It's not completely clogged yet... almost. Art says I should use less water. Riiiight...
ReplyDeleteGigi: I do have my blog link on my New Years newsletter which I haven't sent out yet.
Mochi ice cream? That's a new one for me.
Everybody: Have a very Happy New Year! I'm hoping to get everything done before the start of the new year so I can start fresh.
We're settling in back here at home after arriving at 10:00 last night. We needed to move so much after the flight and the waiting that we unpacked last night. Today I've put a few more things away, shopped for groceries, sorted through my photos and posted a blog, did the laundry (well, Tom did that, read the mail that was waiting for us at the post office, called Jill, ate some of the cookies we brought back, and now I'm catching up on blogs.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing a New Year's mailing, too. Just too busy now, and besides I want to tell people what happened over Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI would have eaten your mom's portion of mochi. She's pretty smart, isn't she, not to get heavy. Good for her. I'm jealous.
Having met you and Art, I can assure you a few extra calories once a year won't hurt, but your mother is very right in theory. LOL

Your list sounds like my list Kay. I didn't get my holiday letter out this year either, and I need to get my thank-you's mailed in the next day or so. The mochi sounds like something I would enjoy. Is it a good-luck dish for the New Year, like black-eyed peas? Happy New Year to you and Art and all the family.
ReplyDeleteYes, I think the drain first. Yes also, we have been on a cruise, and just today I posted pictures. While waiting for the plumber, my images can whisk you away to Mazatlan or La Paz.
ReplyDeleteDenise: Gosh! I don't know what the meaning of eating mochi is. I just know it's a tradition to eat this type of mochi during new years. We've done so every year and it doesn't feel right unless we do.
ReplyDeleteMaggie: It's so hard to not go visiting everybody to see all the things everybody has been up to. However, once I start I'm like an addict and can't stop.
I have to focus on getting the New Years newsletters out as well as the thank yous.
Sigh....
I had to unclog our drain yesterday, ugh. Glad you had a nice Christmas. Kay you sure are a busy lady. Happy New Year to you and your family, be good.
ReplyDeleteOh, Kinako!
ReplyDeleteI really like mochi with kinako and sugar!
do you cook Osechi?
I cooked kuromame yesterday.
and I'm baking datemaki and making kurikinton from now.
by the way I heard people don't clean the house at the end of the year in US.
I've been busy to clearn the house for few days.
anyway,
I wish you a very very happy new year.
よいお年を!
Ayamlin: What fun! No, people on the mainland do not do the cleaning like the Japanese do at New Years. They usually do it in spring and it's called Spring Cleaning. I know my neighbor makes us kuromame, but I've never heard of datemaki or kurikinton. My mother says they're delicious, but expensive.
