You Never Know

By the time we were ready to leave California, I finally started to feel a little human again. I still felt diseased and wore a mask whenever I left the guest bedroom. My poor brother in law, Kent almost never left his room.

Amidst the gloom, we discovered that there was perhaps a silver lining. Hopefully.

We came to California to help Art’s sister, Kay because her husband was in a great deal of pain since July and was going to have his gall bladder removed. The doctors hoped that by doing so, the pain would go way. But they weren’t absolutely sure.

Since he had horrible vomiting and bleeding that sent him to the hospital the night we arrived, they discovered that the pain was most probably because of the huge bleeding ulcer.

Now that they are treating the ulcer and have put him on a specific diet, he is feeling a whole lot better. He finally has an appetite and is not in much pain. He was even out gardening for a bit the day we left.

Therefore, although we were extremely upset and scared by all that happened, overall, we’re finding that Kent was actually quite lucky. By going to the ER and having another battery of tests, they discovered the ulcer. By having to stay at the hospital, he could avoid being near me and my cold for a while.

So yes, it was an awful time… but, it may have saved him from an unnecessary operation and prevented putting his health at further risk.

You just never know.

  1. Well, it's the flight I'm worried about. Let me know how you survived the flight.
On a short flight from Vegas to Vancouver many years ago, I had one flight attendant taking care of me the whole time. My ear pressure went crazy because I had a cold, and she had to keep hot compresses on my ear to keep it from exploding. It was very good of her, but has had me terrified of colds and planes ever since.
    E you soon.

  2. Kay: Actually, I did OK. I was a little worried because I am a somewhat congested. However, I have been taking a decongestant. I made sure I had a bottle of water with me on the flight. Landing in Hawaii was a tad bit tricky, but it helped to sip on water. Your experience sounded awful!

  3. It sounds as though the worst is behind you all, thank goodness. I'd never considered the problems of flying with a cold - sounds nasty!

  4. Well, what an eventful trip, highs and lows. But it's good to hear that everything turned out all right in the end. I hate flying at the best of times, but flying with a cold seems like piling on the agony.

  11. If he has internal bleeding, Kent should NOT take aspirin or Aleve for pain. My sister-in-law did and died 2 weeks after being admitted to ICU. She had an ulcer in her duodenum and the docs said she was bleeding elsewhere.

I am relieved Kent is on the mend, though. Good that the docs corrected their diagnosis!

As for you, Kay, take care and don't over-do it.

  13. I'm glad you were okay on the flight Kay. Both Gregg and Brad have had terrible problems with colds when they have had to fly, dreadful pain between their eyes and ear pain. Your sister and brother-in-law must have been so grateful to you both for being there for them. Hope your brother-in-law has a speedy recovery.

  16. Well, as it turned out, sister-in-law Kay had you there for support, and that was a good thing. And you hopefully got some rest, being quarantined.
