When we built the addition on top of my mother's home in spring of 2006 the construction was actually delayed for quite a while because it rained for 40 days and nights. Seriously! There was so much flooding in the back and side of the house that we had a drainage system trenched in so that the water would not overflow onto our neighbor's property. They were very sweet to come over later to thank us for doing that. It was the least we could do with all the noise and dust of our construction that they had to live through. They brought over mangoes and were so supportive of our efforts...
Our drainage system has not been very necessary since. We've had few opportunities to admire the merits of our trenching because we haven't had the same kind of torrential rain.My brother planted an herb garden over the drainage pipe with rocks to form a pretty stream bed whenever it floods... which it hasn't since...

...until yesterday!
Now Art wants to find a nice rain barrel.
Wow, lucky you! It's beautiful, the gray rain. I can almost smell it.
ReplyDeleteMy soul thirsts for rain.
Your drainage system is so lovely too.
I want a rain barrel, too. Used to have one at our former home and I loved using it to water my plants. Glad to hear you got a nice, although brief, rainstorm. Maybe another will follow.
ReplyDeletewe are having rain this week also. so needed and welcome...
ReplyDeleteSeems as though it's feast or famine where rain is concerned sometimes! I love your last line and I always enjoy your sense of humor! Hope your week is going well, Kay! Enjoy the day!

Hi Kay! I love the garden your brother planted! I have a section like that where I usually plant flowers and it always looks very pretty, but I think I really like the look with the rocks. Your brother has inspired me!! Thanks for sharing! I'm happy you got rain. Though it can be dismal and gloomy, we cannot thrive without it. Hope you are having a good day today!!
ReplyDeleteKay, so glad you got the downpour y'all need in Hawaii! Rain barrels are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard to think of a drought in Hawaii. But I know here in rainy Seattle, if we go too long withoiut rain people begin to fret. Then when the rain returns, we hope it doesn't stay too long.
ReplyDeleteWe're having foggy mornings, sunny afternoons, with rain coming by the end of the week. Maybe you're sending to our way.
Tell me about the rain. LOL. Our brand new porch rug was drenched.
ReplyDeleteI am not complaining as we turned off our automatic sprinkler and saved money!
Tell Art I think a rain barrel is a wonderful idea.
ReplyDeleteYes, hard to think of drought in Hawaii, but I know it can happen.
Hope you have many more rainfalls until the beginning of December.

No rain here, was cloudy yesterday but noting dropped out of the sky that was wet anyway.
ReplyDeleteA nice rain barrel would look great!
I was on the freeway going home past your house around 6:30pm, it barely got the tarmac wet :(
ReplyDeleteThe squall lines are so short here. It can be raining on the front of your car with wipers going, and dry at the back. Whenever I go to the mainland I am amazed at how vast the weather systems are. Walking to school as children we'd just duck into a friendly garage or carport to stay dry, it would never last more than a few minutes.
Its all Obama's fault.

I would like to get a rain barrel also..thank you for reminding me....
ReplyDeleteso happy to hear you got some rain.
ReplyDeleteWe finally got rain today too. It has been awhile for sure.
ReplyDeleteGee, when we lived there it rained almost every afternoon in Kuli'ou'ou. The rain would thunder down for 5 - 15 minutes and that would be all until the next day. I rather liked it. No rain would seem weird.
ReplyDeleteYour drainage system is lovely as a garden. how creative.
I love quick showers like that! In the summer we usually have a quick 15-20 minute afternoon shower. Funny how you don't think of those things but after reading your post I realized how much I love those quick bursts of rain!!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the rains ! I noticed in one of your previous posts that you have got pebbles spread around your house-it looks beautiful and also in my view stops growth of other unwanted plants/grass.Ours is a rainy area and we have tough time keeping our compound looking clean .I loved both the ideas yours as well as your brothers.
ReplyDeleteWonderful that downpour! Every now and then you need it. We have had enough rain ! You have great neighbours and you are great neighbours yourself. It's very important to get on with the neighbourhood.
ReplyDeleteThanks for your comment. New Zealand got its name from the Dutch province of Zeeland, because it was discovered by Abel Tasman in 1642.
Boy, that Ocean sure looks angry.I liked your brothers little garden and the stones he added. Also glad you had rain. Forty days and nights, sounds like in the Bible times. Have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteYour stream bed looks very pretty. And now comes the rain :)
