We asked our daughter what she wanted us to send her from Hawaii and she said she tried some Japanese Tomoe Ame candy in San Francisco and would love to have some. Now that was a surprise!
My grandmother used to buy that for me all the time when I was a child. Hmmmm... That could account for my many cavities.
My brother and I loved it (when we were young) because it's a sort of chewy, fruity flavored gelatin like candy with a rice paper covering that you could eat. It was fun to pretend you were eating paper and have it melt on your tongue.
You could buy it for 5 cents back then. What a shock to see it was now $1.78 (for the same box), but I swear the box is smaller. Sheesh! (Postscript: I just saw a whole tub of this on sale at Costco for quite a bit cheaper if you're willing to buy a WHOLE tub of it.)
My all-time favorite candy when I was a kid used to be LOOK bars. It was a nougat bar covered in dark chocolate. I LOVED it! That was 5 cents, too. I loved it, that is, until I found some worms in a bar I bought from a little store in the country. What was your favorite candy?
Tiffany is modest in her desires. :)
ReplyDeleteThat rice paper on the candy is familiar, but I can't remember where I could have found that candy.
When I was little, in Chicago, my big brother would take me to the movies. Grandma would give us a nickle each for candy. My favorite was a sheet of rainbow-striped coconuty candle, available only at the theater.
I had never heard of that candy but it sounds good! Kay, the boxes and amounts are always smaller than what we had as children-LOL!! The prices too!
ReplyDeletehow about mild duds-chocolate covered caramel chewy and terrible for teeth also. 5 cents/box I bought them at movies and it was only 14 cents for the movie...
ReplyDeleteSounds moreish! I think my favourite sweets were Smarties - like M&Ms. The trick was to hold one in your mouth until the hard outer casing split and the chocolate was tasted. I liked Sherbet Dips, too.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun candy for a child. I remember eating Milky Ways when I was young but have no idea about prices. Thanks for identifying my Agapanthus Kay. It's lovely for me to know what this pretty flower is called. We got back last night and it was raining, but I am really glad to be home again. Have a great week.

I liked "Look" candy bars, and "Big Hunks". The only ones I haven't pretty much out grown are Butterfingers and Reece's Peanut Butter Cups.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of this candy..as a kid I loved going to the family owned little store and getting penny candy....Michelle
ReplyDeletePEZ -- the tiny candy pops out of a hand-held gadget when you press the lever.
ReplyDeleteIn Indonesia we had "Tingting Jahè"It was a ginger gelly sort bar and it tasted delicious!!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure KC won't get cavities!
ReplyDeleteI´ve never seen these candy´s before, but they look good. I´m sure KC will love them too.
ReplyDeleteI´m borrowing your title from a post you did a while back, because I feel exactly the same way.
My Chinese students would bring me this candy. I had never had it before. I loved it. I'm sorry it has gotten so expensive.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite candy seems to be lemon drops these days. We keep them in the car for a quick and handy piece of hard candy when we are on the road.
love that melting rice paper, Kay :)

I don't know where my father found Japanese candy wrapped in rice paper 55 years ago, but he did. My brother and I delighted in shocking our friends when we ate the candy, paper and all. I was just telling my husband about it last month.
ReplyDeleteNow that I think about it, we grew up with lots of Japanese-Canadian kids, and our dad knew their fathers, so that might explain it.
My favorite candy when I was a kid -- good question, Kay. I liked nougat, like you did, although I never found a worm, but I think my favorite was Turkish Delight. It was incredibly sweet, and the thought of it now makes my jaws ache.

(PS: Funny that both of us, named Kay, say our husbands like to travel and drag us around with them.)
Never tasted this one..would love to eat it,specially the rice wrapper. As a kid I liked 'Poppins'but candies and chocolates were given to us in a restricted manner.I am sure that is the reason none of us(we were three, two sis,one bro)had or have any dental cavities.
ReplyDeleteThat is clever to make a candy you could eat the wrappings. I don't remember the candy or the candy bar but they look yummy.
ReplyDeleteMmm,that candy looks so good!
ReplyDeleteI bet I'd love it. My fave are plum candies in rice paper. As a kid I thought they were so exotic. I'm so happy they still make them:)
