I wasn't sure I'd like it since I grew up with the original Hawaii 5-0. My brother and I used to love watching the show to see if we'd recognize any of the places. We'd laugh when they'd say McGarrett was at a certain place and we knew he was on the other side of the island. Jack Lord would often be seen driving somewhere, but we knew he was headed the wrong way. I remember my mother telling me how she stood behind a very tall man at the bank and everyone started whispering that he was Jack Lord. She was awed by how handsome he was.
The funniest thing was seeing Jack Lord always wearing a suit with dress shoes. Sheesh! The only time I saw guys in a suit was at a funeral, a prom or a wedding. I wanted to see the remake because of Daniel Dae Kim who I loved watching in Lost. He always spoke with a Korean accent in Lost so I figured he'd try the local accent for this Hawaii 5-0 remake. Nope. He sounds like a haole (Caucasian person, usually from the mainland) even though he's supposed to be local. Steve McGarrett is supposed to have grown up in Hawaii but he talks like a haole, too. Then again, Keahi Tucker (our haole news anchor) is also local and sounds as mainlandish as any other Midwestern newscaster so I guess it could be believable.
It was interesting to see a woman governor. I guess she's supposed to be like our current governor, Linda Lingle. I wonder if they'll change that since we will have a guy for the next governor.
I like the interaction between the characters, Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams. I think it's more interesting than the original because I always thought they made "Dan-O" look like such a mild subservient underling of McGarrett. McGarrett was also very stiff and formal...rather unapproachable and god-like.
The current McGarrett is just as smart, but fallible. I like that. I also like that Danny Williams is treated more as an equal along with Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua.
Overall, I think there is a lot to like. Hawaii looks good. The writing is good. The acting is pretty good. The action is fun.
I think I'll watch again next week.
Have fun with it!
ReplyDeleteI think I never got into watching the series. But it must have been broadcast here because I remember the title as Hawaii Chamesh-Efes, in Hebrew. :)
It's often difficult to watch remakes but fun when they turn out to be as good as or better or just plain different to the original. I wonder if we'll see it over here? In five years' time, maybe . . .
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed it last night. We are planning to visit the islands for our 10th anniversary so I can't wait to see all those sites for real! It seemed a little forced and uncomfortable at times. I watched the original series as a child at my grandparents. My grandfather loved all the "cop" shows. I grew up 2 hours outside of NYC and my grandparents watched the NYC news station. I remember some of them not having a NY accent. I also remember a radio commercial advertising a class to learn how to not talk with a NY accent. I thought that was so strange!
ReplyDeleteI was a major Magnun PI fan. I'd love to see that show back on t.v., with Higgins included. I've never watched Hawaii 5-0 but am glad to hear it's looking promising.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately it is on at ten, and we go to bed then, darn it.
ReplyDeletenever seen that show but can understand how someone who lived there would identify the places, etc. I do that sometimes with western movies and recognize places from utah or california where I've lived.
ReplyDeleteHawaii 5-0 was a lot like Magnum PI and, yes, I reviewed the show, too. Liked it a little, but probably won't follow the show as it is too violent.
ReplyDeleteWell, since we don't even have TV service -- I was never a TV watcher -- I didn't know they had done a remake! Interesting! Hope you continue to enjoy the series. Have a great day, Kay!
ReplyDeleteSylvia
I enjoyed Hawaii 5-0 last night too! I used to watch the original one and I was a little afraid this wasn't going to be good, but it did entertain John and I.
ReplyDeleteI recorded it last night because I was watching 'Castle", in its season premier. But your review sound about like the one I heard on the radio this morning!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to see this and I totally forgot! That's the problem with not being a regular TV watcher. I also forget to watch the clock for when things come on!
ReplyDeleteDennis, Cody and I thought it was pretty darn good. I'm glad they gave the main characters a back story about their lives (something I don't remember them doing on the original). It made them more "real" and believeable. I was etremely glad that they did not have the characters speak pidgin. Every time Hollywood has attempted this, it's made locals look like uneducated idiots and sounded phony. Besides, I know many locals who were raised here and speak perfect English.
ReplyDeleteThey need to be careful of the continuity though. There was a scene where Steve and Danno were driving a new police car and it magically turned into an older model then back to the new model. LOL...ah well, that's Hollywood.
Nancy: Hmmm... I didn't think about that angle... that it could make locals look uneducated. I agree that many locals speak perfect English. I guess I just love the local lilt in our dialect. I'm wishing I could get it back.
ReplyDeleteI vaguely remember the original show. Reminds me the new fall shows are starting up now.
ReplyDeleteI've been looking forward to it, too, and I loved it. I also grew up with the original. I knew it would be different, but they kept some of the old stuff. I like the new characters. Hope it continues to be good.
ReplyDeleteI didn't...I loved the original though...
ReplyDeleteInteresting !Our cable network broadcasts almost every famous soap from USA ,I hope someday we get to see this one too.
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't watch the premier. I did watch all the shows years ago and Jack Lord was a handsome fella.
ReplyDeleteYes, I definitely watched it. I was waiting with anticipation that evening. I remember the old one but knew it would be different. So love all of the guys!!!
ReplyDeleteWe enjoyed it too, I liked that they didn't remake a classic, just brought it up to date instead. Looks promising and we will watch again too.
ReplyDeleteIt took me a while to find this post!
ReplyDeleteAre you still watching it? It has just come on here in the UK and we're enjoying it.
I dug out your old post because I wanted to see what you thought of it.
Tilly Bud: Yes, we do watch it religiously every Monday night. It's a lot of fun. However, the series makes it seem like we have a ton of weird, major crime in Hawaii. I hope it doesn't discourage tourists. I don't hear of anything THAT major happening in the news...mostly local type stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'd have to say I disagree with your assessment of the first Danno's character; I don't think he was a mild, subservient underling of McGarrett. He wasn't the boss, he wasn't in charge, the man took orders. I think his new character is disrespectful to McGarrett and, really, does this world need anymore bad language than it already has? Granted, on the old show they did cuss, but thank God they weren't saying (and doing!) the stuff they are now back then! Then, I wouldn't get to watch that awesome show with my parents! I'm so glad my dad let me see the old show! I love it and I love its actor and characters, especially McGarrett(Jack Lord)! He was really handsome; your mother was right! I'd also have to say I don't think Jack Lord's McGarrett seemed unapproachable or god-like. He was in charge of a big place with a lot of weight on his shoulders from the crime and being in charge of his best friends' lives. He also got a lot of pressure from the governer to do things "the politically correct way".
ReplyDeleteThese guys do not seem like friends, or even comraades. They appear to be fighting a lot of the time, instead of the older, more experienced McGarrett being a mentor, giving wise, sound advice and council to the younger, more rush-into-things-head-on Danny Williams.
And why must they go around getting people pregnant? What kind of an example is that to our young people? I'm just saying...
I love Jack Lord and his acting and the old show will go on forever.
Be there aloha!
